- A quick walk through of a quick FT-891 manpack build. This build was motivated by the DR-891 from DigiRig.

I recently passed my general this year. This is the radio I had in mind for my first HF.
When I saw the videos that y’all were doing the G90, I was getting interested. I’m glad I’ve waited, because I’m probably going to go this route.
I'm glad to hear that you waited. I've had this 891 for four years. It was the second radio I bought. It would be perfect a new General class operator like yourself. Enjoy.
P.S. I dropped a loner video this morning on the build over on Instagram.
I love mine! I hope you got it.
@@TheTechPrepperdo you have links for all parts so i can check it out.. thinking of getting first ham radio.. need to do cert but should be easy to pass
891 was my first HF rig, still prefer it over my FT-710. Don't let the menu scare you, it makes sense when you start using it. I bought one of the Xiegu radios and regret it. Can't go wrong with the 891, I'm going to purchase a second one shortly.
That DR-891 like a game changer for the 891.
Bingo. I 100% agree. I was never happy with the wire mess and dual-port USB hub approach I tried last year.
. The FT-891 will be officially supported under ETC via the DR-891. Coming soon as part of the R3 release.
A great bag, not yours unfortunately, I've found off Amazon for my 891 with the Armoloq is the Excellent Elite Spanker Tactical Molle hydration backpack. Not great for venting but it does function
Yeah baby! I have a 891 and was always checking yours out in the background.
Have you ever thought about just setting up your own LTE network among your group? We did this in places like war zones, west Texas and n dakota oil fields and the north slope for high bandwidth, reliable comms where no commercial vendor would. Then everyone who joined the group just need a smart phone and signal booster or antenna. Some basic p2p client only apps, network phone server and anything we wanted added in (whatever complexity we wanted to manage). Could be portable or fixed. I really thought ham was headed this way in the 90s and it's like everyone just stopped with slightly better digital modes than rtty.
Finally! Some 891 love!
It was long overdue. This little guys was in a box for the last couple of years.
Emcomm tools support in the future?
Think I am gonna pull the trigger on getting that laminator. I do like those field cards. I just need to print them. And make some of my own.
Lamindate everything!
Really liking this setup. Interested in the single cable setup for the digirig.
There's a longer video on Instagram that I dropped today that walks through this manpack setup in more detail. The full DR-891 video goes public on RUclips tomorrow at 1000 PDT. I cover all the digital settings in that one. 73
I'm with the others that are glad to the 891 setup as that's the route I'm looking at. Setting an alarm to catch that video drop tomorrow.
I knew there was a group of 891 users that would be interested. Here's the early access link. ruclips.net/video/dJ-yH7bAGas/видео.html
Y FT-857D instead that one + armaloque case with battery and almost perfection 😉
great radio 73 from kb2uew
Looks clean
Thanks. It's nice running it slick.
Awsome videos, already put together a ftm 6000r manpack with your design and love it, saving up for a FT 891 now and cant wait to get on HF. Any sugestions for a new ham sooking to start HF SSB? Thanks, LETS GO No Random Contacts!
It's great to see another manpack operator. Nice job on your FTM-6000R build. I would definitely start with SSB voice operation. If you're into the outdoors, consider Summits on the Air (SOTA) and Parks on the Air (POTA). If you are the "activator" people will want to talk to you. I documented my journey on RUclips getting into HF. I have lots of SOTA videos. Targeted contacts probably should come after you get some voice operations under your built. If you're technically inclined, I suggest getting into digital modes. I am a fan of JS8Call on HF. Good luck!
nothing wrong with the G90, just dont transport it with a 3.5mm cable sticking outside the cage.
Can we get another run of the TTP Manpack Bags??? I need one 😢
Unfortunately, no. I wish I could continue to make them, but it was not a viable product to produce at the price point that was required to make it handmade in Arizona with American made materials. After making 150 units it was clear that Americans are used to $30 Chinese bags and overnight delivery from
Amazon and will not pay $300 USD. I appreciate the interest. Take care.
Why no more TTP Manpack bags? I bet a bunch of us would buy them...
They're too expensive to produce locally in the US. Unfortunately, there's not enough of a market given the effort and small margins. I broke even after making about 150 bags. Thanks for the interest, though.
Very good looking setup. May I ask what the over-all costs are including pack and battery? 73's de PD1XAN
I haven't run the numbers in a long time, but this is this complete setup about $1,600 plus or minus a $100 USD depending on the market.
I'm really just getting into following this channel. Please point me to the G90 fail. Why? General, here, but never used the only HF I have which is the G90. What's wrong with it? Heat?
Please search my channel page for the word: G90. The After Action Report video covers the fail. I also did some field tests with regard to heat.
@@TheTechPrepper , thank you.
Why and how did your G90 fail? I have both the G90 and the FT891. Just curious why I should be using one over the other.
Hey TTP, how did you attach the DR-891 to the Armoloq cage? Is that a bracket you fabricated? 73 KK2L
Velcro. Pretty low tech.
Hey TTP, just stumbled onto your channel. What antenna(s) are you running with these HF manpack set-ups such as this one?
It depends on the HF contact that I am trying to establish. These days I am either running my 5-band linked dipole or a 40m EFHW from Tim N9SAB.
Thanks for the awesome videos. Just sent you some buy me a coffee $$. How could I get a set of the field cards? Thanks! George.
Thanks, George. There should have been a link in the welcome email. If you can't find it, please send me a message on Buy Me a Coffee and I'll point you in the right direction.
Where's the frame from?
It's by a company in Tennessee called ARMOLOQ.
Are you building these kits to sell?
Unfortunately, no. I can longer produce the bags and the components are too expensive to stock to have them be a viable business.
@@TheTechPrepper I understand thank you for the reply.
What happened to your G90?
Mine is still in the box un-opened. After Isaac's G90 arrived DOA, I decided that the G90 was not going to be a suitable EmComm rig. I'll use it just for software development as needed.
@@TheTechPrepper So for a first time prepper I should not get the G90? Was thinking about getting it since it has so many features for price, should I skip the G90?
@@cocopuff239 Personally, I was burned by it early on and can't trust it for emergency communication. Everyone should to weight quality, the features needed, and budget when deciding on what to purchase. If I was budget sensitive and looking for a manpack-able option, I would recommend looking into a used Yaesu FT-891. You may be able to snag one for about $100 more than a G90 on the secondary market. You'll also get better build quality and 100 watts instead of 20w. Do you research. Best of luck!
Can you suggest a setup for someone just starting in the shtf?
There are lots of radios, radio services, and antenna systems. It's very different dependent on your particular needs. For local comms, take a look at the AnyTone 878 as it covers analog and digital. For mid and long range communication you'll need HF radio. The Xiegu G90 is a good budget option.
where do you get that rack?
Search for ARMOLOQ on Google
I thought you sold the 891.
The buyer backed out of the deal after he saw one of my early G90 videos.
Hey TTP, still trying to get ahold of you for DSP programming collaboration. Just a heads up.
No emails are coming through. Are you sure you're sending it to my info address? What's your call and I'll look you up on QRZ?
@@TheTechPrepper KL4SF
So yeah parade around a perfect solution but don't allow anyone to buy it got it.
All of this is available to the public for sale.
I really wish I understood what the hell you are saying. I’ve been trying to find a tough shtf radio I can connect with family 20+ miles away.
