Hey APS, I knew a guy who was a retired prison guard. I asked him how some guys survive in prison and he told me about a dude who would ride this imaginary horse every where he went. Before chow time he'd tie the horse up, eat and then get back on it again and even make horse sounds. Then came the day where he was to be transferred or something and when he got in the van, the first thing out of his mouth to the guard was "Oh thank god I don't have to do that anymore". He basically told me that one of the ways to survive in prison is to act insane. You ever experienced anything like that?

One of them asked if I was a chief. After a second of processing, I knew he meant if I were Native and so I said yes. They ended up teaching me all the various ways to make a Towel and your rack into a freaking gym. lol

It is a lot different in UK prisons, you can hang around with whoever you like, one of my best friends in one of the prisons I was in was a huge West Indian dude called macenzie and we sat wherever we wanted 😜

Sit wherever and having good intentions on flag, grab the dominoes and ask the biggest baddest black dude if he would quote on quote "like to play bones" went along way. John Morgan When I did time I knew quite a few guys there, most of them were brothers and I’m white. Since it was prison and no matter how you are on the outside with other races, inside you run with your own. I hung out with the white guys but was still on really good terms with the brothers. Since they controlled a majority of the cigarette and weed market no one cared that I was cool with them. When things were dry for us I could always get stuff from the brothers. Usually they would just give me shit for free. I know it’s odd, but they would. They liked me and never tried to exploit me or do anything shady to me.
I'm too much of a lone wolf. I don't think I could survive prison because of my lone wolf mentality. I don't like relying on other people to have my back. I'm sure I can handle myself if the situation calls for it, but people ain't trustworthy worth a damn. Respect for the videos btw.

Just wanted to let you know that last night I came across someone in a group I am in on Facebook that was going today to speak with kids at a school. not sure how it went yet but being they are an ex addict and wanting to share their life with others so they do not walk down the same road. Also that some of your cooking etc. videos can also be put in a category of survival at complete breakdown of society as well if such ever happened. Keep sending out the word and keep the fight real. You are doing something that was considered boring by so many not that long ago. Enjoy your freedom, all those days behind you now were hard earned. Hey Joe, a few ideas and questions: Idea: Do a short series of quiz show style videos (maybe with friends). Prison trivia, of course. Idea for a topic: true and false prisoner stereotypes and prison myths. I think you've done something similar, but it seems like this is a topic worthy of extra attention. There's a lot of depictions of prisons and prisoners, guards and wardens, but most people don't find themselves in a position to check up on the accuracy of these. I think that's a topic interesting enough to visit in-depth. Idea: More "serious" interviews? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the comedy. It can be a bit rough around the edges at times, but that's part of it's charm. But the interviews, combined with the other content, both give the channel some appealing texture and elevate the level of service to the community. Joe, you have real potential as an interviewer. Not everyone can connect with people of varying backgrounds, get great dialogue flowing, and maintain an appropriately intimate, conversational tone while holding the focus on the person being interviewed. You manage to talk to people, who are often marginalized and/or vilified by so-called upstanding citizens, in a way that, without feeling forced, shows the audience these folks are just like everyone else, but, having encountered a different path, got off-track. You remind us all that "there, but for the grace of God go you or I", and that drug addicts, thieves, and general fuck-ups are just flawed humans who are deserving of compassion and the opportunity to keep trying til they get it right. You help shed a much needed light on the reality of American prisons, and that's helping people understand how the criminal justice system needs to change. I really believe the balance of entertainment and information is doing good work. You've been pretty successful with this channel, but I think you could use it to make a real difference by raising awareness for issues (like the inhumane treatment that is solitary confinement, or the question of whether it's wrong to deny felons what used to be their right to vote, or the disturbing financial incentive to increase incarceration that motivates privately run prisons, etc.). You can help show the nation that prisoners, addicts, and people struggling to avoid returning to those situations, are real people with real hearts and minds and families and hopes and dreams and... human rights. Awareness of these issues is at a high right now (thanks in part to the popularity of Orange Is The New Black). This platform could be a great opportunity. So, now, two questions: 1) Have you ever considered how apt it would be if you could use Hendrix's "Hey Joe" in a video? Maybe the most important one, yeah? 2) Have you considered getting involved in prison reform activism? The country needs action, like legislation, and community leaders, to change things. I watch most of your videos. I've never been to prison, only jail that one time... but I have a backstory that makes me empathise with some of the folks who have hit life's more serious snags here and there. Feel free to tell me I'm a silly idealistic dreamer, or that you're a Republican, or too busy (and congrats on your engagement - don't pass up the chance to be a father just to work yourself to death - parenthood is a blessing that touches you with the unsurpassed joy of unconditional love). Hell i was lucky because every time I went to prison every prison I went to I had at least back 15 to 20 homeboys that That i know from my home town
I feel it. I was met by my people with some coffee and got through it a lot more easily that way.

Just wanted to let you know that last night I came across someone in a group I am in on Facebook that was going today to speak with kids at a school. not sure how it went yet but being they are an ex addict and wanting to share their life with others so they do not walk down the same road. Also that some of your cooking etc. videos can also be put in a category of survival at complete breakdown of society as well if such ever happened. Keep sending out the word and keep the fight real. You are doing something that was considered boring by so many not that long ago. Enjoy your freedom, all those days behind you now were hard earned. Live everyday as you say Ol' Joe and never change from who you are today.

Hey Joe, a few ideas and questions:
Idea: Do a short series of quiz show style videos (maybe with friends). Prison trivia, of course.
Idea for a topic: true and false prisoner stereotypes and prison myths. I think you've done something similar, but it seems like this is a topic worthy of extra attention. There's a lot of depictions of prisons and prisoners, guards and wardens, but most people don't find themselves in a position to check up on the accuracy of these. I think that's a topic interesting enough to visit in-depth.
Idea: More "serious" interviews? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the comedy. It can be a bit rough around the edges at times, but that's part of it's charm. But the interviews, combined with the other content, both give the channel some appealing texture and elevate the level of service to the community. Joe, you have real potential as an interviewer. Not everyone can connect with people of varying backgrounds, get great dialogue flowing, and maintain an appropriately intimate, conversational tone while holding the focus on the person being interviewed. You manage to talk to people, who are often marginalized and/or vilified by so-called upstanding citizens, in a way that, without feeling forced, shows the audience these folks are just like everyone else, but, having encountered a different path, got off-track. You remind us all that "there, but for the grace of God go you or I", and that drug addicts, thieves, and general fuck-ups are just flawed humans who are deserving of compassion and the opportunity to keep trying til they get it right. You help shed a much needed light on the reality of American prisons, and that's helping people understand how the criminal justice system needs to change. I really believe the balance of entertainment and information is doing good work. You've been pretty successful with this channel, but I think you could use it to make a real difference by raising awareness for issues (like the inhumane treatment that is solitary confinement, or the question of whether it's wrong to deny felons what used to be their right to vote, or the disturbing financial incentive to increase incarceration that motivates privately run prisons, etc.). You can help show the nation that prisoners, addicts, and people struggling to avoid returning to those situations, are real people with real hearts and minds and families and hopes and dreams and... human rights. Awareness of these issues is at a high right now (thanks in part to the popularity of Orange Is The New Black). This platform could be a great opportunity.
So, now, two questions:
1) Have you ever considered how apt it would be if you could use Hendrix's "Hey Joe" in a video? That's probably a copyright violation waiting to happen, but it seems like the perfect song for at least one of your videos. Just a thought. Maybe the most important one, yeah?
2) Have you considered getting involved in prison reform activism? The country needs action, like legislation, and community leaders, to change things. You could be a leader. There's so many possibilities... You could work to change the system that keeps non-violent drug offenders, like Dave, locked up, while taking it easy on rich people and rapists. And you could still do cooking videos and skits.
I watch most of your videos. I've never been to prison, only jail that one time... but I have a backstory that makes me empathise with
some of the folks who have hit life's more serious snags here and there. Feel free to tell me I'm a silly idealistic dreamer, or that you're a Republican, or too busy (and congrats on your engagement - don't pass up the chance to be a father just to work yourself to death - parenthood is a blessing that touches you with the unsurpassed joy of unconditional love). One last thing: Yanni is a goddamn gem. He strikes me as a good source of sound advice for the channel. And he's funny.
