The most important thing is to _get up_ at the same time every day. The second most important thing is to allow yourself to sleep when you feel tired and sleepy.
Had insomnia for a decade. Tried everything. Supplements, drugs, sleep routines, no blue light, exercise, diets, avoiding alcohol caffeine etc. Turns out that's all I had to do. Simply wake up at the exact same time every day no matter what and only go to bed when I feel like I'm about to fall asleep. No naps. First week was brutal but after that my insomnia was fixed.
@@ilia2178i actually have had insomnia for 4-5 months. I read a book called “the sleep solution “ and it literally said waking up at the same time no matter what was the most important thing. I did that for 2 weeks now it’s gone
It took me 36 years to realise the absolutely profound benefit of waking up at the same time. After doing it for just 4 days, I couldn’t believe how easily I woke up at that exact same time while feeling completely fresh, all while actually needing lesser sleep. I felt 100 times fresher sleeping just 6 hours because of waking up at the same time, than I would feel sleeping for 8 or 10 hours with wake up times flying all over the place. Modern lifestyles and attitudes to sleep are actually wrong and destructive.
I was unable to sleep for decades. Then I did the sleep lab test, they said I slept the whole night. They define sleep in 5 minute intervals, if are asleep for any part of that interval they count it as sleeping. Now that sleep has been redefined, I'm sleeping just fine, I'm doing so much better now.
When I was 17 and still at school, I used to work night-shifts from 11pm-7am, then I'd go to school 9am-3pm. Did that for about a year, it effed me up so much I didn't sort out my sleep pattern until my 20s.
This vid makes me glad that I've always prioritised getting sleep and over the last 20 years or so I've been better about the regularity bit. I have really enjoyed you programmes over the past few years, Giles. Coding tips about, but your presentations are more unique in substance and the delivery is always fun and top notch. Already looking forward to the next one. Cheers!
That's interesting about biphasic sleep being 'popular' in the past. It kicked in for me 20 years ago when I basically went offgrid. It was harder to stay up late reading in Winter, and I'd awaken approx midnight to 3am before forcing myself back to sleep. I can't bear it and would rather an unbroken 7-8hr block of sleep. Those middle hours aren't useful when you just want to return to sleep but aren't tired.
It seems like it wasn't so "popular" as biological. People would do low energy tasks like stoke the fire. Thousands of years? Yeah I am not going to fight against that trend. If I sleep through the night, fine. If I don't sleep through the night, fine.
No need to watch 10 mins video, he says although 6-8 hours of sleep is important, having a consistent sleep schedule is more important than number of hours slept.
😂 I wonder whether the advent of AI coding means this channel as made the smart decision of coaching other concepts. Still would be good to return at some point.
to anyone having serious issues with sleep, im about to save you 20 years of studying worthless techniques, buying books, paying for courses, therapy, sleep lab visits, medication plans and tons of selfdoubt -> try to organize your life around this problem as much as you can, because there is no fix - your brain is just wired differently. youre welcome, take care ❤
To be fair, the amount of people who can't do that is absurdly high. I took part as a volunteer in a university-aided study group about sleep. We had a whole theoretical course of 8 hours or so on how to sleep well, questionnaires etc. They really tried to hammer home the whole "Just go to sleep at 11 and get up at 7 and all your sleep problems will go away". This DOES sound good until you realize that 30% work on some kind of shift system, 50% have kids and 10% some other obligation that will absolutely not just let them sleep at the hours they want. So not easy at all for most. On the other hand: I personally am lucky enough to be able to do that and it did help me a bit
Absolutely. Most people with sleep issues ie insomnia cannot or will not commit to the mundane routine of having a bedtime 7 days a week. Modern life - work and maintaining a social life doesn’t align with sleep hygiene.

As for why you die from sleep deprivation, there was a recent study on rodents that determined the reason is a build up of some substance (can't remember the name at the moment) in the stomach.
Great video thank you. Worth considering the causality here since disrupted sleep patterns are more common with those who have existing or underlying sleep quality issues.
Super video. I listened to Matthew Walker talk about this on the Huberman lab channel, very interesting although as you said sleep anxiety inducing in places. I will get a copy of the book too as I like to read the ideas for myself as well as hearing about them . Thank you.

What I noticed when U work long hour to the computer is that the brain is tired but my body is not, so I have problems sleeping at a constant hour. I think we should match the tiredness, and make physical activity after mental activity
I swear getting 7-8 hrs sleep makes me more tired than 6hrs which I'm not sure how that works but I've tested it mutiple times & the more hours makes it worse 6hrs seems to be the sweet spot.
So when sleep regularity is the solution but I still want to stay up late weekends for example partying on a saturday What is the second best solution? Is it to keep waking up "early" (even if that means to have only 3 hours of sleep one time) OR to sleep longer on a sunday but wake up on every other day at the same time?
At 9:18 where you say "repairs are being carried out to the spiritual system", where, exactly, in the brain, is that system located? I couldn't find that in any anatomy book.
The book by Matthew Walker is useful in making sure you understand the importance of sleep but it's been criticized as well for it's inaccuracies and unfounded claims. Let's say he's the salesman of sleep.
Young people on the internet, do not do this. Go out, have fun, and don't bother too much. The benefits of experiences, with friends, late at night, on long trips (pun intended), and recovering and coping with little sleep far outweigh the health benefits this video claims.
