I now understand what Trans community is going through in a way. Ughh I'm a Christain and I have to say some of these comments are just annoying. Hozier madeclear in one of his interviews explaining what he wrote the song about. But in MY own personal opinion based of the song and video, I belivie the song is about a gay christian who believes he was "born sick" and pleads to god to fix him or accept him for who he is. But then towards the middle of the song he says "I was born sick but I love it" which means he stops praying for forgiveness and finally accepts himself. But if you seen the video after his long journey of trying to be accepted and finally accepting himself (and even having another person accept him aka his partner in the video) it still ends badly with members of the Church killing his partner. Guys he doesn't hate the church or is "making fun of your religon" he is simply singing a beautiful song about what happens nearly everyday. I'm a christian and I even know this. To all you christains out there, whether you like it or not there are some christains (or members of the church) who will go out of their way to kill homosexuals or "exterminate gays". As much I hate this, this is sadly true. The fact that people are willing to go as far as to murdering someone just because of who they are is sickening. God created everyone just as they are, which means he made a person with disabilites born that way, or a person with cancer, born with cancer and most importantly if a person is gay he created them that way. So if a person is born gay there is nothing they can do about it, he created them that way. But being gay is indeed a sin. i agree with most of what you said except the ending part. in the bible it does say that homosexuality is indeed a sin. but that doesn't mean we should hate people that are gay because god tells us to love everyone. we should only hate their sinning just like we need to hate every sin but we shouldn't hate anyone in particular.

Korea whilst is making greater strides, we still can't marry, we are still seen as a taboo that shouldn't be talked about. America even has the gay panic defence law which can excuse certain murders of LGBT people as the murderer can say they were offended and frightened by their sexuality. Africa and western Asian countries are also extremely heavily homophobic and can be trialed by death depending. I remember listening to this song, all of your songs, when I became a new mother. My sister introduced me to your music, and I would literally dance, listen, sing to these songs as i breastfeed. It wasn't until later I saw this video and it hurt my heart every time. I'm a Christian, I studied my whole life in a Catholic Private School but I've always been a supporter of gays. It's kind of hard choosing between your beliefs and your heart, but at the end of the day I see it this way: everyone has the right to do whatever makes them happy. That includes being gay, straight, bi, trans, eating a shit ton of pizza or veggies. Do whatever makes you happy, because that's what God sent us here, to be happy. We are all human beings with feelings and our sexual preference shouldn't matter. And weirdly enough, the religion teacher I had in HS said the same thing. He respected gays and just said: God loves all of us, no matter what. He didn't bash on them nor insulted them, he just said that it's their choice and if they are happy about it then that was okay. And thanks to him my faith in my religion was restored, knowing that there are Christians out there who also believe the same. Not all of us Christians are crazy fanatics, trust me. I support gays and they are just amazing human beings. I just wanted to put that out there.

Don't let anyone else tell you what is morally right or wrong. Listen to their reasons why something might be good or bad, and make your own decision through logic and reason, which are entirely and surprisingly applicable tools in regards to questions of morality. As it happens, you've already done this and picked a divergent path from the bible. My advice to you is to take a good, hard look at the Bible, with the mindset of a scientist. That doesn't mean looking for reasons why it's right, or why it's good, but looking for the flaws. When I was a Christian, I eventually became an atheist because I said to myself "If God is perfect, then I should be able to hold him up to a perfect standard. How can he fault me for that?" I may not be an omnipotent, perfect judge of extradimensional beings, but I think it's fair to say that a perfect entity does not command that gays be put to death, or murder someone for a bit of semen hitting the ground, or slaughter children by the score, which the Christian god did (in the last case, on several occasions!). Your HS religion teacher lied to you. God does bash gays in the most literal sense. He commands you bash them to death with rocks! This is why "extremists" are sometimes called "fundamentalists." They are just going by what the Bible or Quran says. That's in the Bible, that's what it says to do. Jesus did not get rid of the Old Law, in fact he said explicitly that not one jot nor iota of it would pass until the end of time itself. Now, I don't expect that you'll become an atheist just because of this, but hopefully now you know why atheists and anti-theists like myself often say "oh bullshit" when Christians say theirs is a religion of love. +abigail hinkle You know, the more I watch this video, the more I'm pretty sure it's gotta be dynamite and the video cuts off a split second before it blows. Let me back that up, even. When writing a story, there's an adage about Chekov's Gun, that everything in the story (especially a 4-minute one) has to serve a purpose; moreover, you would certainly think that the writers of such a dramatic scene would adhere to this rule. Thus we should look at what the box actually does or represents. Now, the whole video is spent showing how these two men love each other, so there's no reason to use the box as a token of that love. It also can't be a macguffin because nobody wants it and even the people who's responsibility it is bury it. It can't be opened, so it's not a valuable thing, and is treated thusly. From this, we can tell that it has to have an impact on the story by itself, not as a proxy for an emotion or valuable thing. Yet, in the story, it does nothing, and all it does is get thrown in a fire; so we must assume it does whatever it's going to do after the scene has ended. From there, we must assume that whatever is in the box must interact with fire, because that's the only thing it interacts with (unless someone is going to pull it out of there, which is highly unlikely and would make no sense); again, it has to have a logical and useful effect on the story, so it _must_ be reactive, and the only thing I can think of that would A) Interact with fire B) Not be ruined by being pounded on with a hammer and crowbar C) Not go off immediately would be a big old insulated box of TNT.

My father accepts this; although it was hard for both him and my mother, later they fully accepted it and now my brother is going to marry his partner of 6 years in the same church my parents married and my father will be marrying them.

With God behind you or not, in the end you only have yourself to answer for. Don't live your life begging him for mercy, and spiting him when mercy isn't granted. My mom and I were watching a dance show and one pair danced to this. I told mom I wanna see the video and she said it's very sad, because it depicts what the society does to people, but that it's okay that the video shows gay guys. How we interpret a song does not mean that is what was meant by the artist. Ask different people what the box stands for and you will get different answers. Hozier has, so far, never given an answer when asked about it other than he wants to leave it to our interpretation. He wrote it after he broke up with his then girlfriend. Therefore he is straight or even bisexual but so far I have only ever read about him being straight.

Honestly these comments are really and truly interesting to read. You hear a lot from homophobes, Christians and atheists. My favourite comments are the ones claiming they don't have a problem with homosexuality but still think it's a sin. Now I'm gay and an atheist myself, but I think I know a little something about the bible, but I'm not exactly too sure. Your Jesus Christ died for your/our sins. Bc of this all the sins in the past before him would've been forgiven, but sins in the future would still be made. He would have to die over and over and over again JUST for our sins. So Jesus died for our past, present and FUTURE sins. Meaning that eating pork, lobster, being gay or even masturbating wouldn't send us to hell. And a religious friend of mine said that the rule of gays being stoned to death was in the Old Testament. The Old Testament was strict and had ridiculous rules and even barbaric and sexist rules.thats why there is a New Testament. Less strict and better to live with.

I hugged them as they cried because the boy that ”loved” them just wanted to have sex then break up, and I encouraged them to be strong and learn from experience. It's not my job as a friend to force my friends to never sin. My job as a friend is to be a friend. If your friend can't do that, they aren't worth your time. There are millions of people right now basing their decisions on the belief that there is a God, thus descriminating against homosexuals and denying them their rights. I don't know if there's a God and as an agnostic, I don't care. I do know there are homosexuals on this planet and people are disrespecting them and acting against them, very often in the name of God. I have a very negative stance on faith, but that's not what we're here to discuss. You want to believe and you have every right to believe and in fact, if anyone were to discreminate against a Christian or a Muslim or a Jew I would react just as passionately against it as I do when people discreminate against homosexuals. We are all equals, living in democracy. If a man wants to marry another man, let him do it. If they want to raise a kid, let them do it. They're not harming anybody by their union and the kid is better off with two dads than with no dads. Same thing goes for lesbians of course, or transgenders or what have you. You can think of it as a sin, you can pray for their salvation if you want, but don't stop them from doing something that is not harming anybody. I respect religion, but religion has to respect me as well. You can think of me as a sinner and I can think of you as a fool. Don't come bursting into my home telling me how to live my life and I won't come bursting into your church telling you that I think you're wrong. Ok, I'll indulge you; Agnostic comes from the greek word "gnosis" which means knowledge and putting an "a" in the beggining is the equivalent of "non" in greek. I said "I don't know if tere's a God", therefore "agnostic" fits. I also mentioned "I don't care" and that makes me also "apatheist". I also don't believe in God, which makes me a "non-believer". I also think that according to data available, there is no God, which also makes me an "atheist" or a "non-theist". I'm also opposed to a lot of stuff about religion, which also makes me an "antitheist". To sum up: I am not religious. Agnostic is more accurate (and atheist is the second most accurate) to describe my relationship with God.
You can have your opinion, but if your opinion ignores facts, we will criticize it. The Adam and Eve scenario is by all scientific proof just a story and Catholics even admit that it's a religius tale and not a historical truth. It's not a matter of belief, it's a matter of proof in that case that contradicts this belief, so the belief is non-sensical at this point. You can believe that God guides nature and evolution and has set up the rules for everything, I have nothing to argue against that. Also, being gay is not a choice and even if it is somewhat a choice, it's not a conscious choice. If it was a matter of impresionism, then why are we seeing gay people in Muslim countries where such a choice means death? Nobody has such a strong preference for something. Also, if you do an online search, you'll find various studies where gay people had no neurological sexual response to people of the opposite sex. In fact, they responded to the opposite sex the same way straight people responded to the same sex. You have good intentions, but I think you might be slightly misinformed. It is not an illness, it is a variation, same way as being black, or being lactose intolerant or being blonde. Also there's lots of evidence that genetic factors are involved in the matter, which would suggest that you're born this way. One think you're definitely right about is raising children. Society might not be ready for this and the children will suffer from descrimination. But it is in our hands to change this. Anyway, I'm happy to find religius people who think like you.

Ughh I'm a Christain and I have to say some of these comments are just annoying. Hozier madeclear in one of his interviews explaining what he wrote the song about. But in MY own personal opinion based of the song and video, I belivie the song is about a gay christian who believes he was "born sick" and pleads to god to fix him or accept him for who he is. But then towards the middle of the song he says "I was born sick but I love it" which means he stops praying for forgiveness and finally accepts himself. But if you seen the video after his long journey of trying to be accepted and finally accepting himself (and even having another person accept him aka his partner in the video) it still ends badly with members of the Church killing his partner. Guys he doesn't hate the church or is "making fun of your religon" he is simply singing a beautiful song about what happens nearly everyday. I'm a christian and I even know this. To all you christains out there, whether you like it or not there are some christains (or members of the church) who will go out of their way to kill homosexuals or "exterminate gays". As much I hate this, this is sadly true. The fact that people are willing to go as far as to murdering someone just because of who they are is sickening. God created everyone just as they are, which means he made a person with disabilites born that way, or a person with cancer, born with cancer and most importantly if a person is gay he created them that way. So if a person is born gay there is nothing they can do about it, he created them that way. But being gay is indeed a sin. Inever understood why since I always belived god created homosexuals that way. That just confuses me but anyway I wish people would stop bashing Hozier for making this song. All he did was brought a true story for many people, to life in a brilliant way. I understand if people disagree with homosexuality and go around speaking about how it is wrong, hey everyone is entitled to their own opinion and freedom of speech but the fact someone could be filled with so much hate and willing to kill someone for something they can't control and more importantly has done nothing to hurt you is disgusting. I'm a Christian, I studied my whole life in a Catholic Private School but I've always been a supporter of gays. It's kind of hard choosing between your beliefs and your heart, but at the end of the day I see it this way: everyone has the right to do whatever makes them happy. That includes being gay, straight, bi, trans, eating a shit ton of pizza or veggies. Do whatever makes you happy, because that's what God sent us here, to be happy. We are all human beings with feelings and our sexual preference shouldn't matter. And weirdly enough, the religion teacher I had in HS said the same thing. He respected gays and just said: God loves all of us, no matter what. He didn't bash on them nor insulted them, he just said that it's their choice and if they are happy about it then that was okay. And thanks to him my faith in my religion was restored, knowing that there are Christians out there who also believe the same. Not all of us Christians are crazy fanatics, trust me. I support gays and they are just amazing human beings.

As a former Christian, I can tell you they are one and the same. I struggled a lot due to the contradictions between my faith and my morals. Don't let anyone else tell you what is morally right or wrong. Listen to their reasons why something might be good or bad, and make your own decision through logic and reason, which are entirely and surprisingly applicable tools in regards to questions of morality. As it happens, you've already done this and picked a divergent path from the bible.
My advice to you is to take a good, hard look at the Bible, with the mindset of a scientist. That doesn't mean looking for reasons why it's right, or why it's good, but looking for the flaws. When I was a Christian, I eventually became an atheist because I said to myself "If God is perfect, then I should be able to hold him up to a perfect standard. How can he fault me for that?" I may not be an omnipotent, perfect judge of extradimensional beings, but I think it's fair to say that a perfect entity does not command that gays be put to death, or murder someone for a bit of semen hitting the ground, or slaughter children by the score, which the Christian god did (in the last case, on several occasions!).
Your HS religion teacher lied to you. God does bash gays in the most literal sense. He commands you bash them to death with rocks! This is why "extremists" are sometimes called "fundamentalists." They are just going by what the Bible or Quran says.
That's in the Bible, that's what it says to do. Jesus did not get rid of the Old Law, in fact he said explicitly that not one jot nor iota of it would pass until the end of time itself.
Now, I don't expect that you'll become an atheist just because of this, but hopefully now you know why atheists and anti-theists like myself often say "oh bullshit" when Christians say theirs is a religion of love. Your religion is based upon the bible and the bible is full of hatred and violence perpetrated or supported by an egotistical, malevolent deity.

You know, the more I watch this video, the more I'm pretty sure it's gotta be dynamite and the video cuts off a split second before it blows.
Let me back that up, even. When writing a story, there's an adage about Chekov's Gun, that everything in the story (especially a 4-minute one) has to serve a purpose; moreover, you would certainly think that the writers of such a dramatic scene would adhere to this rule. Thus we should look at what the box actually does or represents.
Now, the whole video is spent showing how these two men love each other, so there's no reason to use the box as a token of that love. It also can't be a macguffin because nobody wants it and even the people who's responsibility it is bury it. It can't be opened, so it's not a valuable thing, and is treated thusly. From this, we can tell that it has to have an impact on the story by itself, not as a proxy for an emotion or valuable thing. Yet, in the story, it does nothing, and all it does is get thrown in a fire; so we must assume it does whatever it's going to do after the scene has ended.
From there, we must assume that whatever is in the box must interact with fire, because that's the only thing it interacts with (unless someone is going to pull it out of there, which is highly unlikely and would make no sense); again, it has to have a logical and useful effect on the story, so it _must_ be reactive, and the only thing I can think of that would
A) Interact with fire
B) Not be ruined by being pounded on with a hammer and crowbar
C) Not go off immediately

Im not fully out yet, only told 2 peeps. i can say from experience its hard not living up to what your parents want. My parents wanted me to play sports, particularly football, have a wife, be catholic, and have children. How we interpret a song does not mean that is what was meant by the artist. Ask different people what the box stands for and you will get different answers. Hozier has, so far, never given an answer when asked about it other than he wants to leave it to our interpretation.
He wrote it after he broke up with his then girlfriend. Therefore he is straight or even bisexual but so far I have only ever read about him being straight.

Honestly these comments are really and truly interesting to read. You hear a lot from homophobes, Christians and atheists.
My favourite comments are the ones claiming they don't have a problem with homosexuality but still think it's a sin. Now I'm gay and an atheist myself, but I think I know a little something about the bible, but I'm not exactly too sure.
Your Jesus Christ died for your/our sins. Bc of this all the sins in the past before him would've been forgiven, but sins in the future would still be made. He would have to die over and over and over again JUST for our sins. So Jesus died for our past, present and FUTURE sins. Meaning that eating pork, lobster, being gay or even masturbating wouldn't send us to hell.
And a religious friend of mine said that the rule of gays being stoned to death was in the Old Testament. The Old Testament was strict and had ridiculous rules and even barbaric and sexist rules.thats why there is a New Testament. Less strict and better to live with.

have you watched And Then We Danced? I think you may enjoy it. it's a Georgian movie with a gay protagonist. He and his romantic interest are both dancers, and the film explores such themes as poverty, tradition vs self expression, sexuality, and homophobia. It's really beautiful.

There are millions of people right now basing their decisions on the belief that there is a God, thus descriminating against homosexuals and denying them their rights. I don't know if there's a God and as an agnostic, I don't care. I do know there are homosexuals on this planet and people are disrespecting them and acting against them, very often in the name of God. I have a very negative stance on faith, but that's not what we're here to discuss. You want to believe and you have every right to believe and in fact, if anyone were to discreminate against a Christian or a Muslim or a Jew I would react just as passionately against it as I do when people discreminate against homosexuals. We are all equals, living in democracy. If a man wants to marry another man, let him do it. If they want to raise a kid, let them do it. They're not harming anybody by their union and the kid is better off with two dads than with no dads. Same thing goes for lesbians of course, or transgenders or what have you. You can think of it as a sin, you can pray for their salvation if you want, but don't stop them from doing something that is not harming anybody. I respect religion, but religion has to respect me as well. You can think of me as a sinner and I can think of you as a fool. Don't come bursting into my home telling me how to live my life and I won't come bursting into your church telling you that I think you're wrong.
P.S.: These are the views I have as a heterosexual man raised in Catholicism. I became an agnostic/atheist after 5 years of careful thought and consideration. I have no gay friends, I have no gay sibling. I just care about other people.

Agnostic comes from the greek word "gnosis" which means knowledge and putting an "a" in the beggining is the equivalent of "non" in greek. I said "I don't know if tere's a God", therefore "agnostic" fits. I also mentioned "I don't care" and that makes me also "apatheist". I also don't believe in God, which makes me a "non-believer". I also think that according to data available, there is no God, which also makes me an "atheist" or a "non-theist". I'm also opposed to a lot of stuff about religion, which also makes me an "antitheist". To sum up: I am not religious. Agnostic is more accurate (and atheist is the second most accurate) to describe my relationship with God.

You can have your opinion, but if your opinion ignores facts, we will criticize it. The Adam and Eve scenario is by all scientific proof just a story and Catholics even admit that it's a religius tale and not a historical truth. It's not a matter of belief, it's a matter of proof in that case that contradicts this belief, so the belief is non-sensical at this point. You can believe that God guides nature and evolution and has set up the rules for everything, I have nothing to argue against that. Also, being gay is not a choice and even if it is somewhat a choice, it's not a conscious choice. If it was a matter of impresionism, then why are we seeing gay people in Muslim countries where such a choice means death? Nobody has such a strong preference for something. Also, if you do an online search, you'll find various studies where gay people had no neurological sexual response to people of the opposite sex. In fact, they responded to the opposite sex the same way straight people responded to the same sex. You have good intentions, but I think you might be slightly misinformed. It is not an illness, it is a variation, same way as being black, or being lactose intolerant or being blonde. Also there's lots of evidence that genetic factors are involved in the matter, which would suggest that you're born this way. One think you're definitely right about is raising children. Society might not be ready for this and the children will suffer from descrimination. But it is in our hands to change this. Anyway, I'm happy to find religius people who think like you.

Don't want to disappoint you but the song is actually about sex apparently. The music videos messages works and is a powerful message but just isn't what the song is truly about. I used to think the music video was an accurate representation of the song meaning but I was wrong.
