- Java is the most populated island on the earth located in Indonesia in Southeast Asia with a population above 150,000,000. The Java Region of Indonesia includes the provinces of Banten, Central Java, East Java, the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, the Special Region of Yogyakarta, and West Java. Java a multinethnic region is home to many indigenous ethnic groups like Sundanese, Javanese, etc and also immigrant ethnic groups like Chinese and Tamils. Java was core centre of Hinduism and Buddhism into the Indonesian archipelago which spreaded because of trade with India. Hinduism maintained it's dominance throughout till the arrival of Islam and Java was the epicentre of Hinduism in the Indonesian Archipelago though Buddhism flourished a lot too. In 671 CE, the Srivijaya Kingdom promoted Mahayana Buddhism in the region maintaining Shaivate influences from Hinduism and made the region a major trade centre. The Prambanan Hindu temples and the Buddhist Stupa of Borabodur (largest Buddhist structure on the earth) are splendid examples of Hindu-Buddhist legacy of Java. The Javanese Hindu Majapahit Empire, known as the Golden Age of Indonesian history also thrived in the region. Islam arrived in the region through trade and after the Majapahit Civil War the Islamic Demak Sultanate took over Java rapidly Islamizing. The region was also the gateway of Islam and Christianity (in early forms) in Indonesia. Through the Aceh Sultanate people of Indonesia became Muslims. The Chinese people who had immigrated in the Srivijaya period also increased in the region. Christianity spreaded in Java in small numbers during Colonial periods under Dutch, especially in the 20th century and had also previously introduced by Portuguese who had colonized Malacca. The Chinese people were forced to convert to Christianity and Buddhism in 1950s and 1960s leading in decline of their ethnic folk faith. Many Chinese people in Indonesia still practice Confucianism. Hinduism increased in Modern times of Java mainly because of Balinese immigrants and some Tamils who had settled in Indonesia during Colonial eras. A significant group of indigenous Javanese Hindus also exists.
