"I'm gonna hide this tape when I'm finished. If none of us make it, at least there'll be some kind of record. The storm's been hitting us hard now for 48 hours. We still have nothing to go on. One other thing: I think it rips through your clothes when it takes you over. Windows found some shredded long johns, but the nametag was missing. They could be anybody's. Nobody... nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired. Nothing else I can do, just wait... R.J. MacReady, helicopter pilot, US outpost number 31."
Love this damn movie. The idea of having something that can perfectly copy something else that is living and then act exactly like it is terrifying. Cant imagine being stuck in the middle of nowhere with a group and having to figure out who is real and who is the monster.
And to think that the short story this movie is based on (John Campbell's 'Who Goes There?') came out in the 30s. Scientifically speaking, this is an organism who's cells can selectively differentiate, becoming whatever they need to to mimic any kind of host they interact with. Technically, during the change, it would put out a LOT of waste heat during the cellular transition, but I'm thinking it could recycle that heat internally as an incidental energy source.
@@ashleywalker1411 Yes, I wonder what secrets are really hidden in Antarctica. Based on the movies, I think the outpost with MacReady and crew was just a resupply depot to support scientific teams. The Norwegian team separately discovered a craft frozen in ice, locked away for millenia.
Like the first, I love the deep blue effect. The animation gives a contrasting wind chill feel compared to the dead cold of the first video which had a deeper sense dread whereas this one approaches on the more mysterious and subtly ominous. I don't know which I like better between the two though. On another note, if you're gonna continue on iconic 80s film soundtracks, I'd recommend The Beast (1988). That's a seriously underrated and less recognized film with an amazing score that perfectly suits the atmosphere you tend to transition these tracks into.
Got a cousin that married a Norwegian man and went there to live with him. In order to be eligible, she had to learn and prove she could speak Norwegian and she had to have a job within a certain amount of time, otherwise, she'd be deported. In other words, she had to both ASSIMILATE into the culture and BE PRODUCTIVE. We need more of that here in the States.
You might want to pick up Peter Watts' retelling of the 1982 movie through the Thing's perspective, titled 'The Things'. EXCELLENT story and damned creepy the way he describes it. Try reading THAT while listening to this music...
Imagine after almost being killed by the Norwegians, the dog-Thing ventures out into the storm and sits staring at the base while contemplating its next move, completely unbothered by the cold. Then, as it decides it has to be stealthier in its approach this time, it goes back inside and assimilates one of the few humans to be the least suspected when the paranoia starts, beginning its new plan for domination.
‘Well…..the backscatter effect’s been bringing things up from way down around here for a long time,I’d say…….I’d say the ice it’s buried in is a 100,000 years old …at least!’

Which makes it a christmas movie.
Thumbs up, just because it's "The Thing"
Do you ever wonder or has anyone ever asked John Carpenter, what were the Norwegians, Mac and the boys studying at that outpost?
