This is one klassmate that honestly enjoys your smart ass tidbits & comedic additions. And your more serious comments, rare as they are, contain wisdom only obtained via experience, as far as I can tell. And I appreciate all of it. You are a big part of this channel & little community Uncle Larry has created. Thank you for being here…long haired viking basement dweller😉🤘
I don’t play slide but, the part about combining slide with fingers made total sense. I find it incredible that Uncle Larry takes the time to do this. Thanks, I think everyone deeply appreciates what you share.
Mate, I just got to say how good a communicator you are. Im sure a lot of us out here in the world dont understand how hard it is for a person to have a natural conversation with a black rectangle on the desk and make it feel like you are talking directly to each of us. Great stuff.
As soon as you said, "Now, I'll play some pentatonic blues over major", I started laughing out loud on the bus. Tom Britt, beautiful player. Aloha from Hawaii
I've been playing slide for over 50 years. I toured with a Hawaiian Show Band in the early 70's. I'd sometimes tune to a 6th. It would give that Hawaiian sound. No one ever taught me anything on guitar, I developed a bad habit of putting the slide in my middle finger. I can still play chords with it on though. One trick many people don't know, I usually tune my bottom string to a "D". It gives that 'Allman' type tone without changing your whole tuning.
Tom, I have a guitar to send you. I’m a guitar painter/refinisher, just moved to Hendersonville from the state of Ohio. It’s a Refinished USA Fender Stratocaster like this 🎸👍🤘🏼
There is a priceless vid of him playing Duane Allmans firebird … there’s a note that takes off and keeps going and he stops and says something like “holy shit !!” It’s sooo good
Tom, you know it's not that easy for us mere mortals. 😂 You're such an amazing player. You're my favorite channel, there's no one else out there with your level of knowledge, yet and so down to earth.
George Harrison became a great slide player. His own unique style and tone. “How Do You Sleep” is one of the best slide performances ever recorded. Great tone on the white Strat.
Thanks man, took a work break to view this. You hit ALL of the important slide issues I have. One of the most useful Homeskoolin' lessons simply because few people ever really talk about or teach slide nuances. Not that I am huge slide fan (much less player), but the country band I am in (first time doing mostly country) keeps asking me to do more slide and about the only slide I did prior was stuff like Tush.
Fantastic insights Uncle Larry, and sure going to apply. Good thing i only ever wanted to sound like myself....cause i sure haven't ever been good enough to sound like an exact copy of a great!.
Hey Tom, I got home to a cool package today. I opened up my copy of In Stereo, put it in my stereo, and listened to you and GT in stereo. Totally awesome from front to back.
Breeeliant episode Sir. The speed and accuracy of the “pick tuck” in the transition from “fingers to slide” was some weapons grade stuff. I’m constantly floored by “some guy in his kitchen giving free guitar lessons”. As always, thanks for the data.
Tom: Thank you for a wonderful slide lesson for us all, a great topic and it’s helps very much. Every video you produce and music choice you play is very helpful to us. Heard your beginning comments on a writer that writes to you maybe with a negative bias? They could be a troubled person. You have so much to give and you deliver it to us, to help us. A friend told me once, “be like a duck let the water roll right off your back”. Because >110K subscribers can’t be wrong. Thank you for everything you do for us all.
Great video Tom. Beyond the technical stuff, the big takeaway for me is to not be embarrassed to take lessons as an adult. So many of my favorite players talk about lessons in interviews, etc... There's always something to learn. Have a great afternoon.
Thanks UL for the slide lesson. You covered the basics and they are 90% of the difficulty for me. And thanks for not getting into the fray about which finger to use with the slide.
I agree with your Stringlocker assessment. I love reading his comments, I actually look forward to it after your videos end, I go on the content scroll hunt for his comments. Only love (& sarcasm) in this community you’ve created SessionMan! It’s the best🤘💕
I'm learning the missed notes in-between these styles. Time seems to be learning tool for this , which gives so much character. Tone , Touch , feel. I'm still diggin the channel. Inspirational as alway's
I didn't hear what you said in between jams...and then suddenly heard the awful sounds of pentatonic over major...i quickly rewound to hear the introduction...of course.. Uncle Larry making comedy on the guitar...that is funny stuff. THANKS BUK!!! Love it
Hi Tom, My CD arrived in the mail today. I am absolutely loving the listen while I’m working. Thank you to you and Guthrie for making this record! I love the genuine dedications and thank yous inside the CD case! Truly original music and sincerity prevail! ❤🎸🎶
Thanks for the lesson Tom! Great tips! I dabble like a hack with a slide but appreciate the art form. Slide to me was Ry Cooder, Jessie Ed Davis and Duane Allman, Rory Gallagher, David Lindley, Johnny Winter, Lowell George and Bonnie Raitt.. and much later Derrick Trucks.Derrick can play anything with a slide...he can play almost eastern Indian ragas with the damned thing...that man is mind blowing....
Okay that was actually HUGE for me to hear you say you do not mute behind the slide. As a casual slide player I have always been led to believe you have to do that and I have never been that good at it. Great video
Timely slide tips. I’ve been playing slide for most of the 50+ years I’ve been playing guitar. It comes and goes, but just this week decided to refurbish the slide playing. Thanks.
Some great practice recommendations for slide contained within! Thanks. If you have not done one previously, would love to a similar segment on the aforementioned Ebow.
Tom you gave some of the best advice about playing slide that seen. Especially about playing in tune and how slide position is the key and use your ears is so important. Homeskoolers should check out Sony Landerth in Congo Square just do it.
5:18 a KILLER slide lick, I tried it immediately and it feels fantastic. And actually 5:12 also a tasty little slide lick when Uncle Larry shows us how NOT to bend the slide!! :D Even that sounds perfect. Thank you for everything you do once again!
I found a video of you a while back tracking some slide, and in the comments you were saying you use low action and your normal guitars - it changed my whole approach, can’t say thanks enough Tom
I was watching Bonnie Raitt the other day and noticed her slide is on her middle finger. Seems to help her voice chords over the slide finger. She's got a strong pinky
Great comments on slide playing! I've been a pinky man since forever, but I can see the benefits of ring finger too. Being a Sonny Landreth fan, I like to play behind the slide a lot and that gives me more options but you do forgo the extra stability with it on your ring finger. Like you said, go with what seems comfortable and natural to you. Finally, mixing slide and fretted notes is where it's at!
Man this was awesome! As someone who can’t see, slide is hard, but with your tips, I’m going to keep trying. You should check out how Allen Hinds puts slide into his playing, he does lots of what you are talking about here. Thanks so much Tom!
All I can say is guilty as charged

My wife bought me the most awesome Father’s Day gift-we’re going to Nashville to see my favorite Uncle Larry and Vince Gill!
Same here!
I don’t play slide but, the part about combining slide with fingers made total sense. I find it incredible that Uncle Larry takes the time to do this. Thanks, I think everyone deeply appreciates what you share.
Thank you bro
The only thing I find incredible is how incredibly hard this shit is to do
I love the way Larry always says he's not a slide player and then sounds he was born with that thing on his finger
yeah like Paul Gilbert
Mate, I just got to say how good a communicator you are. Im sure a lot of us out here in the world dont understand how hard it is for a person to have a natural conversation with a black rectangle on the desk and make it feel like you are talking directly to each of us. Great stuff.
Indeed!
Perfectly stated
Uncle Larry...I gotta say, I believe every note you play. That first minute oozed vibe.
Thank you bro
Shit day at work just disappeared. So cool brother .
Isn’t that the truth. Just another work day. Sweet tones for sore ears. I’m surrounded by grinders in a steel shop.🤪✌️
@@Foofang65 yep scaffolding for me. Old Larry can be counted on to obliterate a poxy day, with just a few bars.
Amen
Spent all afternoon staring at the wall. You made me pick up a guitar. Good medicine

Don't get it 😅

Love this Tom!!!!
That Dylan Adams is killer on slide guitar !!
I think that's the fella he's talking about
Top Episode Thank you man 👊
Jack Pearson is great on slide guitar, I saw him hold a note for nearly 5 minutes...

@@brandongoodman1017 I saw that, man it was good! I would love to see him and Tom play that would be a hell of a mix in styles!
I’m about to go see Derek live in 2 weeks. I can’t wait!

Dylan Adams has some great tips on slide. Thanks for all you do Tom been here since Corona lessons, they got us through the crazy times
That's who popped into my mind when he mentioned Derek Trucks...
Dylan rules
I've been watching Homeskoolin' for a while now and this is probably the most informative lesson I've seen yet. Excellent explanations and tips.

Thank you uncle Larry , your the best and you are making the world a better place
Thanks Tom, Nice lesson!
Always fantastic, thanks so much Uncle Larry. This should be appreciated by everybody that comes here. Thank you
This is one of your all time best episodes in so many ways.
George Harrison became a great slide player. His own unique style and tone. “How Do You Sleep” is one of the best slide performances ever recorded. Great tone on the white Strat.
Derek plays slide like he's playing trombone! SO musical. I really appreciated you comments about not copying our heroes. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Tom, this is a super helpful video. Love the concept of practicing finger independence with the slide on! Great advice!!
just..... gorgeous! that opening practically makes me cry.....
