Xuē Rénguì 薛仁贵 and Wáng Bǎochuàn 王宝钏
Chinese History's Most Epic Tale of Devotion: The Story of Xue Rengui and Wang Baochuan
Today, we dive into an incredible tale of love, fate, and devotion that might change how you view the human experience. This story takes us back to the Tang Dynasty, where the prime minister's daughter defied wealth and status to marry her true love, a humble man. Shortly after their marriage, her valiant husband went to war...for eighteen years.
In Chinese culture, marriage bonds are believed to be arranged by the heavens. Immortals picked two celestial beings to descend to Earth and act out a script that embodies unwavering fidelity in marriage.
In 794 AD, Xue Rengui was born into a poor family. Two years later, Wang Baochuan was born to the prime minister. Wang Baochuan grew into a kind-hearted young woman, while Xue Rengui became a principled young man. The heavens watched over them, waiting for their paths to cross.
Wang Baochuan rejected wealthy suitors, dreaming instead of a noble man she saw in her dreams. When the prime minister arranged a husband-choosing event, Xue Rengui accidentally caught the embroidered ball meant for her suitor, leading to a series of events that saw Wang Baochuan choosing love over wealth, defying her father, and being disowned.
Living in a humble cave, Wang Baochuan's determination only grew stronger. She endured hardships, foraged for food, and remained faithful, all while her husband fought in distant battles. Her unwavering spirit and the protection of divine forces kept her safe from suitors and other dangers.
Eighteen years passed, filled with trials and moments of hope. Finally, Xue Rengui returned as a triumphant general, reuniting with Wang Baochuan in an emotional and joyous moment. They lived happily ever after, leaving behind a powerful tale of responsibility, loyalty, and unwavering commitment.
What did you think of Wang Baochuan's resilience? Are there other touching tales you'd like me to tell? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
Poem describing Wang Baochuan's fate
紅鸞星動 (Hóng luán xīng dòng) means “When the Red Luan star moves.” The "Red Luan Star," is a symbol of love and marriage in Chinese astrology, and it moving implies auspicious developments in one's romantic life.
寒窯以待 (Hán yáo yǐ dài) means “Await within the cold cave,” implying there will be prolonged hardship to endure.
鉛華洗盡 (Qiān huá xǐ jìn) means "The makeup is washed away," which symbolizes a shedding of the superficial.
二九之期 (Èr jiǔ zhī qī) means “A period of two nines passes," as in the age of 18, or 18 years.
戎馬倥傯 (Róng mǎ kǒng zǒng) means "In the hurried midst of warhorses," implying a time of change or turmoil.
夫貴妻榮 (Fū guì qī róng) means “Both husband and wife will flourish" - literally what it says.

*Also...this story is an interpretation based on different sources from what is conventionally told. Some of the people, places and events will be different depending on which book you are reading or the version you have heard.
There’s a Hong Kong TV drama in the 80s. It’s called “The general who never was”. I watched this as part of my growing up. There’s a part 2 related to his son also.
Great story, this is a story in Chinese folklore, but the name of the male leading role is 薛平贵, not 薛仁贵. 薛仁贵 is a role in another story. If you are interested in this story, i have a recommendation, there are some TV dramas about this story in China, the best one is called 薛平贵与王宝钏, it was released in 2012.
I also learnt it as 薛平贵 (Hsueh Ping Kuei in the Wade-Giles system) when I was in Primary school 60 + years ago. The text was Lady Precious Stream.
She was staying in a cave home waiting for her husband’s return.
Wow brought me to tears a bit...what a beautiful story 🥹❤️
There is a song about Wang Bao Chuan, how her husband riding a horse, rushing home to see her.
Great storytelling. Thanks Jared

wow, love the story! Keep telling more!
Merci pour cette vidéo, l'histoire est très touchante.
There are so so many parts of this story which are very very much similar to our Hindu mythology . I am very surprised to learn that how much similarities we have in our scared Book of Ramayana our Holy Book with similar stories
王宝钏 (wang baochuan) is with 薛平贵 (xue pinggui) , not 薛仁贵 (Xuē Rénguì). 薛平贵 (Xue Pinggui) is a fictional character. 薛仁贵 (Xuē Rénguì) was a Chinese military general during the early Tang dynasty. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xue_Pinggui_and_Wang_Baochuan
Great Job telling the story.
🙏
I loved the way you sequed to Surkshark, sneaky but elegantly transitioned…!

Great story thanks
😎👍
Beautiful
I saw this story featured in this year's performance of shen yun at the theater. Great story.
This was great. Have you told the *Generals of the Yang family* yet? Especially the female generals would be a great tale to tell.
I believe there's a slight mix up if this story is lady precious stream.
My first love and I had a long-distance relationship. We waited 18 years for each other. Due to a misunderstanding, I then thought she had broken up with me. I didn't hear of her again until 7 years later, when she travelled here, looking for me. Alas, she had waited 25 years in vain, because by then I had married another.
sorry to hear your story if it's ture
Hua Cheng: *Waits 800 years*
