  • Meet Elliott, a 15+ year old double yellow headed Amazon parrot. Age truly unknown other than he's much older. Most people believe older birds aren't trainable, especially to be able to fly and that you must get a baby bird to teach flight training but Elliott proves them all wrong.
    He started inside a closet... and look at him now!

    This made me weep! Last winter I inherited a 20+ yr old CAG who also refuses to fly. I have been told he once did fly, but his previous owner clipped his wings and his heart was broken. He hasn't flown since. It has been my wish to help this wonderful CAG regain his strength and willingness to use his wings for more than a parachute. So thank you Elliot, for proving you never know what is inside a bird. Never say never. Especially when feathers and BT are involved!!

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 2 года назад +1

      That's so sad 😢 One of mine is currently going through a heavy moult & we were doing great flying training, but then he found he struggled to reach the perches, due to loss of altitude from the feather loss & so now he's refusing to even try to fly. If a moult can do that, I can imagine a feather clipping would have an even more devastating impact on a bird's willingness to even try. If he's willing to use them as a parachute though, there should still be hope :) maybe you might need to resort to the table tip? Hopefully treats & just feeling comfortable enough to do it before that though. Mine is sort of willing to attempt it again now for mealworms, being a lorikeet, they're not even meant to eat bugs, but he will seriously do ANYTHING for a mealworm! Fingers crossed you can find a similarly powerful treat for yours & get those wings working again :))

    I agree SO much with the safety element raised here! Please teach your birds to fly people, even if only 1-2 metres inside your home. So many people in bird video comments seem to have birds that crash & so they clip them or lock them up to keep them "safe", but it's like a baby learning to walk, the best way to keep them safe is to give them the skills to do it in a safe way.
    One of my rescue birds arrived with the name "Crasher", cause apparently he would crash into everything & how funny that was to the people in his old life apparently 😞 Anyway, to stop him getting constantly hurt, they just locked him in his tiny cage for a decade :-( When he arrived at my place, he was cage territorial, but too scared to leave it, but as soon as I broke through that & had him starting to climb on the outside of it, he would fly & crash anytime he was startled by a wild bird outside, or any other noise, so before he was even step up trained, just trained to touch the stick & be lured, I began working him with perches, having him jump to them & bigger rewards if he used his wings in the jump, so now he doesn't crash anymore! Took a while, he had no idea how to judge distance & control his landing, but with practice he learnt.
    He only reached about 1 metre of controlled flight before going into a heavy moult & refusing to fly, but it's enough :-) He still accidentally flies off (long distances) when he gets startled, but he always lands gently now (not graceful, but that doesn't matter), not a heavy thud into a wall or similar. Once his moult is finished, we'll hopefully do some more work, meanwhile we're enjoying going outside & eating bottlebrushes, with me confident that when he gets startled, he can be safe & make his way back to his cage.
    Anyway, again, even if only for indoors, please teach your birds to fly for their own safety

      Bird are beautiful and easy after you learn what they like n best suits then, if they get not go out they need a avian light 💡 for a least haft hour daily. Good brand of pellets always fresh water snacks n toys. to drink, they love showers but with a spray bottle at the beginning is fine. Remember they need a least 12 hours of sleep put something dark color n not noice if u have a spare room without noise is better. They love to play outside from their cage only supervised in case they chew a cable or something dangerous. I used to have a pair of birds 🐦. Another tips is they feel lonely if they alone for to long, I left the tv on not to high the volume or radio. I miss my birds so much but I move and they wanted to charge me over a hundred monthly extra n have to find a another home. Anyway after they see you everyday they get used to you at the beginning they’re afraid but let get use to u changing water/food every time n you’re going to be happy. Careful using nonstick cookware the smoke is toxic to them. I have a air filter for my birds too bc I didn’t wanted them getting sick only on during the night but it’s up to the person went cooking or cleaning is go on , n they never got sick with me. Good luck with your bird 🐦. Always read n research

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 2 года назад

      Have you touch trained him? That can be done even within the cage & then used to help get him out of it & feeling safe doing so :) Also, do you have any of the screw on perches? If not, buy/make a few & attach them to the OUTSIDE of the cage around the door, so he can come out but still feel he's within the safety zone of his cage. I use one of these attached to a large door on my cage for training, it's on the inside, but when I open the door, it's then outside the cage, but still within the cage zone that mine feel safe in. Below the small cage doors on the other side are little perches they can sit on if they're game to exit their cage (but right near the door so they can duck back in if they get scared). Roof of the cage is a great spot for treats & playing too once your bird's feeling safe enough to venture to there (mine will climb onto the roof, but don't feel safe there in the way they do in their cage & on the perches right at the cage doors)

    Amazon parrots are supposed to be climbers, mainly. Not fliers. Which is why they have two forwards-turning toes, and two backwards-facing ones.
    I originally learned that they naturally only fly twice a day (or double that, maybe, I guess...). Once to get to their mid-morning feeding tree, and then in the early afternoon, to another feeding-tree. And then back home.
    If you can tell me differently, I'll be happy to learn of it!
    I love mine, but graceful fliers they will never be! :P

    I love all your videos and every single video is very helpful for a parrot owner like me! I have an eight months old sun conure and she's such a baby♡ By the way could you please make a video on parrot diet and chop for birds and also daily routine with your birds?

    Really enjoy these testimonials, and hope you continue to share. Love Elliott's humans, and their determination to give him the best life possible, so happy they found BirdTricks to not only help Elliott to fly, but to have a healthy diet. Thanks and see you soon!

    FYI, in order to protect against predator attacks, hawks, other birds of prey, you can purchase and use an air horn, compressed air in a can, and blow it to distract the attackers and warn your bird of any danger. My parrot doesn't fly but spends a lot of time in the open and there are hawks where I live. I've trained it to associate the loud sound with presence of large dangerous birds. I would blow it whenever a hawk or falcon or any large bird would show up on the sky and I would immediately take my parrot indoors for a few moments until the predator bird would disappear.
