I remember having a couple of drinking birds when I was a small child in the '60s... It was my introduction to chemistry... 'coz I was fascinated how I could make the coloured 'water' boil by holding the bottom bulb in my fist... With a diode-based powerless radio ('crystal set') I was obviously always going to be a science nut :) ...
We had one of those drinking bird things when I was growing up. The water doesn't do squat it works because of the room temperature. I never used water with the one we had. I think there is Mercury in it that makes the liquid move, At least that is what my mom told me years ago.
I still have mine from years ago! I was told it had mercury in it too but really it can contain: ether, alcohol, methylene chloride or carbon tetrachloride. Mercury is opaque not transparent

The drinking birds were in all my friends' kitchens when I was a very small kid. I wanted one so much, but my mom said it was just a fad and that the liquid was deadly mercury, so she didn't want to risk it breaking and poisoning my brother.
