I have a story about the night Kanye made that statement. My husband was working for Electronic Data Systems at the time, they ran a huge call center that supported GM. The call center volunteered to answer phone calls during the telethon. People were calling in, making their donations, it was going well, and then Kanye said George Bush doesn't care about black people. The call center was inundated with callers angrily retracting their donations and demanding their credit card transactions be cancelled. He directly cost money to Katrina relief with his words.
For those of you that are learning about 9/11 in school, experiencing it live was PAINFUL. I was living in NY, I was 16 and a junior in high school and my dad worked in the city, needless to say I was petrified that he was dead or caught in the wash of everything. Long story short: he was alive and made it home but this was our Pearl Harbor.
I was 9 when it happened, a year before I moved to the US. I remember getting ready to go to school and walking into the living room to see my mom crying profusely. First instinct was that something happened to my dad or sister, but she was watching the news. All I remember seeing on the tv before she told me to look away, was people jumping out the windows. I had no idea then that I’d be living in America for 21 years after that, but even as an outsider i witnessed how painful it was, I can only imagine what it was like for those who were there and specially those that lost loved ones.
It was the day the world stood still i remember being told some bad people did bad things and the teacher sent us home when I walk in the door the tv showed me the evil I’ll never forget I was in 5th grade
What’s crazy to me is my uncle was a involved in Katrina and 9/11. He was a Virginia state policeman, now retired, and was by the pentagon when the plane hit. He worked the crash site for weeks. And when Katrina happened he was a volunteer that went there with hundreds of other Virginian firsts responder volunteers.
That just shows that fans should check themselves. Some of them think they are high above everyone. Its important for these occasional reality check to happen. The situation between clebrities and "fans" has been like the current internet for years. You can safely say and do anything to the celebrities expecting minimum backlash while if the celebrity even looks at you wrong, their life gets ruined. That fan had no business throwing the drink.
I was 25. I left work for the day. My sister-in-law worked in downtown Manhattan and my husband was pretty distraught. She ended up ok but we didn't find out for hours.
Everybody had to leave the schools in California, at least in San Francisco. What district were you in that kids could choose to leave? It was a national emergency, except that the Emergency Broadcast that was supposed to go off on National TV, didn't go off. But schools, airports and everything was CLOSED that day.
I’m from Texas. So in 2005 a lot of Katrina victims came over and we welcomed them with open arms. Still have very good friends to this day who’s from New Orleans. It was a horrible moment
One of the hardest things about watching Dale Earnhardt, was Darrel Waltrip. His little brother just won that race and his friend died at almost the same moment.
I still remember where I was on 9/11. I was in the ninth grade, just had football practice, and was headed into history class for third period. And I remember as soon as I walked into class, this dude David Arsenal laughed and was like "dude somebody bombed it's World Trade Center." And I had just come from football so we were kind of in the dark on everything,, and then everyone just watched the news for the rest of the day
I remember waking up and my mom was watching the News. She was like “Omg a plane hit the twin towers in the states!” And I was about 11 so I just stared at the tv like huh this is crazy. Then the second plane hit and I felt this horrible realization that it WAS Live TV and that people just died and are dying in front of us on Tv. I still think about it allot. The world really spiralled out of control after that in a wayZ
I was the exact same age. I heard the tail end of a news snippet on the radio as I turned it on and it just said "....I can't imagine the loss of life because of this in New York. We'll keep you updated" and played some music. I turned on the TV (we only had 2 channels, CBC English and CBC French) and there was the North Tower smoking. I woke up my mom and told her a plane hit the World Trade Center and she said "no it didn't, go look again". I went and watched for a little longer and boom. United 75 went into the South tower. I went and got my mom and told her another plane hit and she came downstairs and saw what was on TV. I will never forget that moment. She was in her white and green housecoat with her hand over her face and just kept saying "Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my god" softly. Being 11, I couldn't understand why she thought this was such a big deal. I mean, I understood it was a terrorist attack and it was horrible, but I had never seen her react this way to something so far away (we were in Northwestern Canada). Now I know what both of us probably didn't even realize at the time. We were watching the death of the 90's. We were watching the idea that our safe little continent was perfect and safe and everyone is your neighbour and we all liked each other die in front of our eyes.
The sad thing about Ernhardts death was it could of been prevented, but I had heard he refused to use the safety devices that are now used because of his death. Either way, it was devisating to lose him.
I was working at the local newspaper in the printing room when 9/11 hit, and i had been there for over 2 years and that day was the only day I ever heard them say stop the presses. We all had to take a break while the news was unfolding.
I’ve learnt everything I can about 9/11 and it still shocks me every time I see that First plane flying low and hitting the first tower. It’s truly unbelievable that it happened.
just mentioning 9/11 still gives me the sweats and makes me tear up uncontrollably. the image of that 2nd plane, live on my tv as I was on the phone with friends in NYC, will forever haunt me.
I remember being in high school on 9/11. All the teachers had it on the classroom tvs and before the Principal could even announce what was happening the second plane hit.
Sept 11th was so confusing, scary, and painful it was hard to even think about until later. The Iraq invasion really sticks with me. Watching that unfold as a young woman, pregnant with their 1st child, it felt like everything I had to offer her was going wrong. The world seemed like it coming unglued and it felt even larger with the gravity of my baby's future in mind.
I remember being glued to the TV during both 9/11 and Katrina. Another traumatic TV moment was the Challenger explosion. I didn't get to see it live, as I was in gym class, but the rest of the day the TV was on in our classrooms.
I'll never forget the day my brother was watching TV and he gives me this look and my first thought was "Oh my god, Putin nuked Ukraine. The world enters a new era. Nothing will ever be the same." So I asked him what happened and he says "Will Smith just slapped the shit out of Chris Rock on the Oscars."
Kanye saying George Bush doesn’t care about black people and then 20ish years later being an avid trump supporter and sporting a white lives matter jacket is wild
Does watchmojo realise there are things that happen out side of the USA? Almost all of this is American based. What about the death of Ayrton Senna? The whole world doesn’t revolve around the USA
I remember when Dale Earnhardt died. He was my family's favorite driver. I was 6 and at school when the planes hit the towers. My uncle was FDNY when it happened and he lost his life that day. The 2000s were nuts.
I remember watching it unfold. From confusion on what was initially happening to watching the 2nd plane hit live. It was then we realized what was taking place.....truly the nation was silent. So very silent. I lived in colorado at the time and the normally busy city was dead. Its was earily quiet. We will never forget!
The same time Katrina was going on, we had massive floods in my hometown on the west coast, It obviously wasn't nearly as bad as New Orleans, but for months all we heard about was flooding.
Little did Kanye know that Bush had both Colin Powell and Condeleezza Rice, two Black people, as his Secretary of State for his first and second administrations respectively.
Okay, this is pretty skewed to the US because I'm really surprised the Boxing Day Tsunami isn't even mentioned here... It shook me almost as much as 9/11 personally.
I had my dad on Wall Street when the towers fell and you don’t know how far the buildings fell and I can’t get in touch on their cell I was so and worried and scared. I finally heard from him and he told he was in Brooklyn. He had to stay there for 2 days with a friend from his job. Until my step mom picked him up go to Long Island. So blessed that he went back and so saddened they so many passed that day.
before even watching this, i just know 9/11 will be number 1 on this list. i'm from NYC & was in 5th grade when it happened and saw the smoke from my school at the time not even knowing what just happened. crazy & terrifying event that changed the country
I was in 3rd grade when 9/11 happened. I lived in Northest Iowa and I now live 3 blocks from my grade school, never left because living in NW Iowa is cheap and i went to college here. We were just about to start class; one of my classmates said she saw a plane bit something on TV. At the time, we thought she was talking about a TV show. After that, over the intercom, all teachers were called to the staff room. We were right across from the 4th graders, and we were instructed to stay in our seats. After recess, we had an all school assembly and were told what happened. Parents were called and we were dismissed a couple hours later, as everyone was terrified of a military base about 2 hours from our town was going to get hit next. I remember my Grandma coming to pick my brother and I up from school, bringing us home, and we sat and watched the news with my mom and Grandma the rest of the day. Seeing the people covered in debris and bloodied on TV was probably not a good idea for an 11 year old to watch at the time. Whenever I see footage of that day, I tear up and get flashbacks to that day.
Actually Aytron Senna was the most tragic in motorsports history. The 1955 Lemans was the greatest tragedy in motorsports history on live over 80-100 lives including 2 drivers lost their lives
I remember almost all of these, expecially 9/11 and when the Sadam statue was brought down. A soldier at first placed an American flag over the statue’s head then quickly it was replaced with an Iraqi flag.
Hurricane Katrina…seriously so disheartening to always learn about. And knowing my grandma wanted to stay during that. If she chose to stay, she’d be dead, cause her home was horribly destroyed, it collapsed and it was left as nothing but piles of wood 💔. My dad is one to always wanna stay during anything like this to happen. If we stayed, we wouldn’t have faced any damages, but the mold was so bad and was everywhere when he went back to retrieve some of our stuff that we left behind.
The worst part is supposedly they reported it as a category 3, and didn’t do much to prevent any further damage. Again, dad wanted us to stay, thank God for his friends telling him to grow a brain and have us leave.
How did the JetBlue landing gear failure make this list but not Miracle on the Hudson? It was amazing how Captain Sully was able to land that plane in the Hudson River and not cause one single casualty! That should definitely be on this list!
Can't believe it's been over 20 yrs since the Intimidator passed away! I still think Sterling Marlin tapped his bumper got Dale Sr. loose and into the wall. His legacy still continues!
i was in middle school during 9/11 we got let out of school early but none of the teachers said anything,my mom and grandma picked me up and when we got home they had the tv on and told me about what happened
Three months prior to the attacks I was in New York City for my aunts wedding. three months and the towers I had once stood on top of would become rubble. I lost my innocence on 911. It was the day the world became real to me. The most poignant thing to me was watching all those people jump to their deaths.
Vaguely remember seeing the 9/11 one without understanding much what Twin Towers represented and misremembered the number of planes that them, also I didn't realise it was a terrorist attack at first but what I won't forget is one of the towers collapsing. I was a child back then, I remember the image of Saddam Hussein's statue being taken down.
Yeah I was in 3rd grade and we watched it on tv but I thought it was just an accident and didn’t know it was a terrorist attack until my mom picked me up from school and told me
i thought those planes that hit the towers were from an archive video from the 70's. then it dawned upon me that it's live news. we were almost 60 years since Pearl Harbor then 9/11 happened.
I was laying on the Floor with my Fiance when my Phone started to go off she said "forget about your Phone please" then I put on the TV I just stared in disbelief
i was in elementary school when the twin towers were hit and my moms friend wanted to come to the school and pick up her son but my mom talked her out of it saying he's safe where he is
Correction- Dale Earnhardt did not die on live TV. He was in critical condition and died in the hospital moments later. His car was modified like they were in the old days where he had no padded head protection, and that smacked his head against the side of the car and fractured his skull. His death changed the sport’s safety regulations forever.

Definitely the Iraq war from 2003. I was in elementary school when this happened.

Iconic in the worst way.

One of the hardest things about watching Dale Earnhardt, was Darrel Waltrip. His little brother just won that race and his friend died at almost the same moment.

i was in middle school during 9/11 we got let out of school early but none of the teachers said anything,my mom and grandma picked me up and when we got home they had the tv on and told me about what happened
How about a top 10 or 20 cartoon episodes that made us rage quit video?
If 9/11 is included I see no reason why 26/11 Mumbai attacks were not included in the list.
Man Kanye really did a 180 huh? Now he be wearing shirts that say “white lives matter”. Mental health is a crazy thing.
#7 Bet those pilots had nerves of steel.
Three months prior to the attacks I was in New York City for my aunts wedding. three months and the towers I had once stood on top of would become rubble. I lost my innocence on 911. It was the day the world became real to me. The most poignant thing to me was watching all those people jump to their deaths.
Wow that Bush clip of the "military operation" to "disarm" Iraq sounds like they announcing an event rather than a 20-year war.
The death of Dale Earnhardt at spot #3. Coincidence!?
After 9/11, did you guys know that it took over 10 years to find the man responsible for the attacks?
And where was he? In his house.
Yeah I was in 3rd grade and we watched it on tv but I thought it was just an accident and didn’t know it was a terrorist attack until my mom picked me up from school and told me
Death of Dale Earnhardt was #3?
I see what they did there
What about the Boston Marathon Bombing?
#3???
Poor Mike Myers he's white and was like "nope" but Chris tuckers face!? 🤣🤣🤣
Is a fuel dump by airliners nowadays a modern invention? Could the jet blu plane not do that instead of flying around for hours?
i thought those planes that hit the towers were from an archive video from the 70's. then it dawned upon me that it's live news. we were almost 60 years since Pearl Harbor then 9/11 happened.
Balloon boy
Hurricane Katrina?? More like Hurricane Tortilla
I was laying on the Floor with my Fiance when my Phone started to go off she said "forget about your Phone please" then I put on the TV I just stared in disbelief
i was in elementary school when the twin towers were hit and my moms friend wanted to come to the school and pick up her son but my mom talked her out of it saying he's safe where he is
I’ll never forget 9/11 seeing the people jump to their deaths was the most horrifying thing I’ve ever seen happen on live tv
For the JetBlue landing, couldn't they dump the fuel like all emergency plane landing films taught us?
There's area on approach they can do it if needed. On takeoff is a little harder as you don't want to spray an area in fuel that people live in.
