Amazing that the American born timpanist has adapted to the German configuration of his timpani drums.

It makes actually zero difference how you configure them. You just do what you personally prefer. I played them in both configurations, but since my main instrument is the piano I prefer to have the lower notes to my left, just like on the piano.

If the best Mahler symphony is, as the saying goes, "the one that the listener has most recently heard," then the seventh is always the one I've most recently heard. Or at least I could say this: there is no greater retransition: there, in that sense, he peaked with seven.
It's so funny that conductors tend to rule in pairs, in opposite polarities: when Mahler 7 was written, you had Strauss and Mahler, and now you have Roth and Currentzis. (Also -- it's so touching to me that when I was a child, the organ I heard at church on Sunday mornings was played by FXR's dad)

Such an amazing interpretation with well-handeled Details......but IMO as an audience the overall Tempo of 2rd and 3th movement was just likely to be faster than usual(e.g. in Recordings of some CDs)

Hi @MarcusHammarberg! Ja, vermutlich würde jeder Euphoniumspieler nach seinem Solo gerne einfach heimgehen anstatt noch eine Stunde auf der Bühne zu warten, bis die Sinfonien endlich vorbei ist. 😄

Yes he knows the score and they play the notes, but where is the music, the engagement? Where is the mystery, the visions, the humour, the irony? He shows no smile nor an expression anywhere, just conducts the score. This was probably the least exiting Mahler 7th I have heard.
