I am not a WVU fan by any means, but there wasn't a team in the world beating the Mountaineers that night. Look at Schmidt in the background....you think he was going down that night? After all of the controversy and commotion caused by their head coach bailing on them only a few weeks before, to being told by everybody that they didn't have a prayer in beating OU that night, to losing out on the national title game losing to thief rival...all of that pent up frustration created a buzz saw that obliterated OU right out of the gate. Powerful speech and game.
Trey Warnock I agree. I honestly believe that WVU team could've beat the team that won the national title game that year .. Patrick white was 4-0 in bowl games and 2-0 in BCS GAMES
Priceless speech! They just had to win. West Virginia was pumping with hope and pride. What a great night to be a mountaineer! Owen put the bow on top in his post game interview. Loved that team! RIP Coach Stew!
Bill Stewart was incredible guy, incredible recruiter, the kind of guy that would meet you once and remember everything you told him. He would remember all the names of the people in your family and what they were involved in. WVU missing those 9-2 Stewart teams nowadays… but they are reaping what they sowed..
@@StokPrescott It's all relative. Bill Stewart inherited a program that was going 12-1, 11-2, etc. every year leading up to him. That was where the problem lied. Going 9-4 was below WVU expectations at the time. It would be well above them now, of course. Just a victim of bad timing. If he would've followed Neil Brown and not RichRod, I'm sure his work would be looked upon a lot more favorably by WVU folks. That's why it's always better to follow the guy who fucked up rather than the guy who had a ton of success. Stewart I'm sure knew he was going into literally a no-win situation.
I am a KU fan and I live in Australia but I have watched this every time I have sat down to study for my final semester exams. Pass or fail West Virginia is going to hold a special place in my heart. Coach Stewart really has motivated me to excel.

1 Minute and 53 Seconds of cold chills. I'm proud to say that I'm from his hometown. No matter if it's a winning season, or a losing season, good coach or bad coach, we all remain true to our Mountaineers. Coach Stew knew how to motivate someone, and every word he spoke was from his heart. He never had to rehearse speeches or anything, he just spoke his feelings. That night, he left no doubt in anyone's mind. Rest easy, Coach. You did a wonderful job.
"You outblock em, you outtackle em, you outhit em, and you outhustle em. It's Mountaineer Pride!" I wish they still played this before games. I know he didn't leave WVU on the best of terms, but it gave me chills everytime, hearing the entire stadium recite it. RIP Coach Stew.
I have watched this speech a dozen times or more. It gives me the COLD chills every single time. What a pre-game speech and what a BUTT-WHIPPING WVU put on the SOONERS!! One great speech..one great game..one great day to be a MOUNTAINEER!!
RIP Coach Bill Stewart; with this game in Arizona, he not only united a fractured team, but an entire state. If no other moment in recent West Virginia history is remembered, let it be this one. From a college football fan in Wichita, Kansas; Coach Stewart, you DID leave no doubt that night. Thanks a million!
Great speech man!!!! Patrick White guided West Virginia to a stunningly easy romp over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Then, the option quarterback made his biggest pitch of the night. White ran for 150 yards and threw for 176 and two touchdowns in a 48-28 victory. After it was over, he endorsed Mountaineers interim coach Bill Stewart to become the permanent successor to Rich Rodriguez, who bolted for Michigan last month.
Im a Canes fan but I want to personally offer my condolences to the Stewart family and Mountaineer Nation. He really seemed like a great man and leader of men. He always had that smile on his face that I'll never forget.....Again, my most sincere thoughts and prayers, Mountaineer Family. Rest in Peace Coach Stewart
And the Mountaineers surely left no doubt on that night! Bill Stewart was not only a great leader and a great coach, but a great man. As a Seminole fan I hold with great pride & honor he was the last coach Bobby Bowden faced. I hope I speak on behalf of all Seminole Pride by saying Coach Stewart is one of the most respected men to put his name & face to this game. My heart & thoughts go out to athletes who played for him, the fans who embraced him, & the family who loved him. "LET'S GOOOOO..."
@ Kyle Stofko Great Comment you made Yeah! at least coach Stew knew how to play good Defense and special teams and he knew how hold a team togeather unlike that moron Holgerson and Stew cared very deeply about the state, the team, and the fans unlike that moron idiot Holgerson who is just after that 30 million bucks old Ollie Luck promised him ..lol
tauras88d I have total respect for Coach Stew but he was not a good head coach. His offense was terrible. His defense was only good because the defensive coaches all stayed when Dickrod left. He couldn't recruit, I mean seriously who purposely doesn't take the maximum amount of recruits you can each year.
Most coaches only dream of delivering a pre game message like this. God bless Bill Stewart. I will always have a special place in my heart. A true Mountaineer!
This 2 mins captured a snap shot into their lives that day. Real. Raw. Anxious. I didn't know him. I don't know football and I live far away from there, but this is one I will view for years to come. Motivation.
I unknowingly met coach Bill Stewart in Shepherdstown West Virginia. This was prior to him becoming the head coach and right after Steve Slaton and WVU played Louisville (I think 2007 season?). The season had just ended. I'm staying in a hotel in Shepherdstown and am heading outside walking down the back stairs to go outside. This older gentleman with a beer and stogie in hand looks at me and says "how ya doin". We chat for a few minutes and he tells me "wait here I'll be right back". He comes abck 2 minutes later with another beer and stogie, hands it to me, and says let's go, I need a toking buddy. I proceeded to chat outside the hotel with him for about an hour and man was he a great guy. He NEVER once mentioned football and I had ZERO idea who he was. Shortly after, a van pulls up and 2 girls get out of the van and say "coach, where do you want this equipment?". I said, "are you the coach of WV football?" and he replied "not yet". I will never forget how awesome, humble, and laid back he was. WHAT A COOL GUY and this video is exactly how I would have imagined him treating his players. Such a cool memory.
1 thing to add here, after I found out who he was, I remember asking him about the arm injury Steve Slaton had in the game against Louisville where he fumbled the ball 2 or 3 times. He told me, that Steve injured his arm towards the beginning of the season and they hid it from everyone. I asked why and he told me very sternly, because your opponent will repeatedly punch, kick, scratch, claw at that arm if you don't.
I've been a mountaineer since I came into this world in1978. I have never been more proud of the boys than I was on this night. Nobody said we could do it. And we rolled them Sooners like blunt that night!! RIP Bill Stewart. Truly a great Mountaineer!!
Coach Stew...may never be remembered as a great coach or eloquent speaker. That night in the Fiesta Bowl however, he was a great coach..motivator..leader and powerful-figure. His integrity, loyalty, humility and genuine humanity....may never be seen again. "We are but a mist....apperaing for awhile and then disappearing." All of us would do well to live our lives as Bill did....making our appearance here count. LEAVE NO DOUBT....Bill left no doubt! RIP

Well a lot of people were totally upset with Stewart back in the day from 2008 to 2010 the way he handle things and how he let what should have been the 2008 championship season get away from WVU but I would give anything to have Stewart back and running the team today because he was a good leader, he cared about the team the fans and he could get a team thru a season and Stew was a true Mountianeer that loved the state, the team, and the fans. unlike that Holgerson whom I think does not have a clue what the hell he is doing most of the time and like many i"m convinced he just threw away the WVU/TCU game in order to keep the big12 in the playoff running this season because it was a fact that if TCU lost at WVU then that was it for the big12 and its playoff hopes not a chance in hell but they got it now bud, so in the process Holgerson just killed WVU"s shot at a great bowl this season with that shit he pulled against TCU and if that was not bad the shit he pulled at weak suck ass Texas today really iced it big time for WVU this season and I will be stunned beyond belief if Holgerson can even win at suck ass Iowa St to end the season and yeah Holgerson will get a minor bowl with his little 6 or 7 win season this year but it wont matter because somebody will blow his ass of the planet in a minor bowl game ..lol now if coach Stew would have been running this veteran laden WVU team this year, then you would be looking at an 11 win season or even better, or just possibly undefeated going into the playoffs because Stew knew how to motivate and get it done period, but sadly that's not the case and isen"t it funny that the highest paid coach in WVU football history is the worst coach ever ..lol FUCK HOLGERSON AND HIS BUTT BUDDY PARTNER IN CRIME JOE DEFOREST ..LOL
