    Aldi’s is great for everyday items that are vegan and better prices. Fresh lettuce and other produce, lemons, limes, plain canned beans, some spices, berries, frozen veggies, etc. If you stay away from the highly processed items you can get a decent amount of groceries for a lot less than main stream grocers that are naturally vegan. So I hope you will try them again. I was reluctant at first and now I have a set amount of items I go for on a weekly basis.

I like their organic oil free pasta sauces, baked chips, produce section, salad dressings, garlic olives, Vegan products like tofu and veggie pot stickers, orange juice, spices, canned beans and veggies, canned soups, oatmeal, grits and frozen items especially the unseasoned frozen veggies. I can't believe how little you found at Aldi, since I get quite a bit there! But I have noticed that not all Aldi stores carry all of their products - I've never seen those beans at my local Aldi, for example - and the quality of their fresh produce also seems to vary from location to location. My local Aldi carries a number of vegan staples and has excellent quality produce.
    At my local Aldi store, I buy fresh fruits and vegetables, mostly organics (I use EWG's lists to decide which produce needs to be organic), though there is a limited selection. I also buy some organic frozen veggies, chia seeds, flax seeds, quinoa, brown rice, sometimes other single-ingredient grains, white vinegar, sometimes other vinegars, edamame pasta, chickpea pasta, lentil pasta, quinoa and brown rice pasta, no oil and no sugar marinara sauce, a different type of no-oil and no sugar salsa than shown on this WYW video, pineapple canned in its own juice (I can't eat it raw), pumpkin puree, pistachios or peanuts and sometimes other dry roasted and unsalted nuts and seeds, sometimes canned beans and canned veggies (Not potatoes! Ick!), medjool dates, organic dried herbs and spices (limited selection) and sometimes "special purchase" or "seasonal" foods that are only available for a few weeks or months (sometimes these are brand name products at deep discounts).
    Some of the canned products go into my emergency supplies cupboard because of salt content (rinsing well removes a lot of the sodium), but if I get the organic version, like organic canned black beans, they usually have much lower sodium content, equivalent to the reduced-sodium brand name beans at other stores, but at a lower price. I've also gotten unflavored, unsweetened plant milk at Aldi when my usual store was having supply/restocking issues.
    What each Aldi store carries does vary, and you do have to read labels carefully, but it can be a good resource for those of us on tight budgets.

    I mostly avoid products and do the majority of my basic grocery shopping at Aldi's because their prices knock the other stores out of the ballpark. Just a quick example... a bag of fresh spinach is a buck, and 3 heads of romaine hearts are around 3 bucks. Unfortunately they have a limited selection in the best of times, but after the hurricane here recently, it was totally depleted. When I had to stop at another store for my salad goodies, the same size bag of spinach was almost $5, and the romaine almost $6! Money is so tight I had to pass, and walked out with a head of cabbage, kale, and some carrots and have a fresh batch of broccoli/lentil/radish/fenugreek sprouts to add to it. Slaw instead of salad this week kids, but at least we still have a home!

    I’m glad to have started shopping at Aldi. I love the size of the market and I seem to get so much more food at a lower price than I would at a grocery store, even at Costco. My bill today was $85 and have so much variety I have enough food for a good 3 4 weeks with a replenish of fresh veggies in a couple weeks. 👍

    Don't forget that most of the salt in cans, like beans and lentils, is in the fluid/juice. So draining and then rinsing is going to remove nearly all the salt apart from the miniscule amount that may be absorbed by the product.

    • @WellYourWorld
      @WellYourWorld  Год назад

      The potatoes are cooked in brine it’s impossible to remove entirely.

    • @ceeemm1901
      @ceeemm1901 Год назад +1

      @@WellYourWorld That's right, but I didn't say it completely gets rid of it. It will minimalise it a great deal. Not sure about cooking in brine. The extra salt ito cook with is an added expense, unsalted water will cook them just as well. It's generally used as a preservative as well as the worlds No1 flavour enhancer. But there is no way those potatoes will contain even half of that salt content. A teaspoon of salt has about 2000mg of sodium and I don't know anyone who is worried about salt, drinking or adding the juice to their meal.....but potatoes are cheap as chips (pun intended), so buy the raw product and save on the wasted metal and energy and transport of the canned stuff.

    They have a 1 lb bag of pre-cooked brown rice, it's usually on the end cap in Ohio.
    Sometimes you can find something good and the clearance aisle. I bought several cans of organic diced tomatoes. But they weren't salt free. At one time they were selling organic tomato paste in the tiny cans but I haven't seen it since and that was 2 years ago.

My fave food items are their store brand of salsa (Casa Mamita medium spicy) and fresh organic fruit and peppers. I went to the Aldi's on Bell after they opened and was underwhelmed. The 2 things I liked were their frozen corn and peas, as they were organic and cheap. I just did my one of a few times a year trip to Bashas today, as they had asparagus, organic grape tomatoes on sale, with 20 cent limes and 50 cent large avocados! My fave salsa is throwing grape tomatoes in the food processor and whizzing up until chunky, putting in bowl with red onion, cilantro, garlic, a touch of cumin, black pepper and garam masala, lime and adding chipotle in adobo that I have already whizzed up to a paste and keep in jar in fridge. The canned chipotles do have some salt, but depending on how hot you like salsa (I'm a medium), you're only using about a tablespoon per pint of tomatoes. Grape tomatoes have the perfect liquid to flesh ratio for salsa. 😉

    I know that the products can vary a lot depending on what part of the country you're in, and even from one store to the other. Unfortunately I don't have a Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods anywhere near me, so it's only Aldi, Jewel, or Hy-Vee. Best wfpb items in my Aldi include:
    Canned tomato paste, zero added salt
    Canned organic beans, fairly low sodium
    Dried beans and dried lentils (limited variety, but cheap)
    Produce! Best prices on fruit & veg.
    Nuts (both raw and roasted, ck lable)
    Flax seed, chia seed, almond flour, and yeah, that canned pumpkin!
    Steel cut oats (watch the label, they carry both traditional and "quick cooking", only get the traditional)
    Raisins, and some other dried fruits but READ the labels, since some have oil or sugar, but the raisins are just raisins. Last yr around the holidays they had dried figs, just pure figs, which I used to make the homemade fig Newtons recipe from Plant Pure. They also have a good price on medjool dates.
    Frozen vegetables and frozen fruit.
    Tofu (when it's actually in stock).
    I do not purchase any of their plant milk because all of them have added oil and thickeners and crap, their soy milk doesn't have added oil but it has added sugar.
    And lately I'm addicted to the Herb & sea salt Norwegian crisp bread, which is like a seed cracker with wholemeal rye, oats, spelt bran, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, etc, which is fairly low in sodium and has no oil. But caution, they always have it right next to the other crackers and crispbread which do have oil (so just read the labels).
    I have a lot of temporary items and seasonal items, the lentil lasagna was great but I can't get the lasagna anymore.

    I use Robertos mild green chili salsa, no added sugar, 150mg sodium in 2Tbs. I also have bought and love tomatillo salsa made from tomatillos and jalapeños, no added sugar. They both are pretty flavorful on top of most any steamed or raw veggies. The Robertos is my go-to on my standard grocery list. The Herdez brand of tomatillo salsa called salsa verde is also my go-to and I use this in many recipes as instant flavoring. I can get both at Walmart and usually Kroger/King Soopers in Colorado. I make my own guacamole most of the time but if I'm having a big group over, Yucatan guacamole with 150mg of sodium per serving is what I buy. It's easier to serve a bigger group with this since I can get a lot of it. It goes quickly at a party. On the canned potatoes, I have bought them sliced in a can, or diced, and drained and rinsed them before putting them in a 9 can veggie soup recipe. I've convinced my husband to use a bag of mixed frozen veggies rather than usong so many cans of veggies now. He doesn't want to peel and dice potatoes so he opts for the canned variety. He whips up a double or triple batch of veggie soup pretty quickly with canned and frozen veggies and we use it for many lunches and dinners as a full meal. Whole foods that make my life a little quicker are canned no salt added beans, frozen broccoli and cauliflower as well as mixed veggies and stir fry veggies, plus frozen fruits help ease the meal prep on many days and nights.

    I've used many a can of cooked potatoes when camping. Makes a cool hash. Of course that was in the days I was still using oil, and 'meat.' The meat was canned corned beef... Yuck. Adding lots of onions, green and red peppers, and spices; cooked in cast iron over an open fire, made it tasty. Nowadays, I'd rethink the recipe, but eating them straight out of the can has to be the worst way to eat anything. Still think they're a useful commodity to have on hand for those emergency moments. Also making a rocket stove to easily cook or heat something to eat and drink. Makes life better in those difficult times. If you're not prepared, and have starches cooked and ready, it can be a big surprise. Then you'll love haveing the canned potatoes.

    Thanks for another great video! I love your recipes and make them often. I especially love your cooking shows! Thank you for helping me on my whole food plant based journey! I really enjoy many of your products, too! :) I go to Aldi fairly frequently. I buy certain produce items there. They have a moderate selection of organic produce. They do have organic soy milk (in the cold section) that contains some sugar and additives, but it is really cheap. I have to go to another town to get unsweetened organic soy milk, so the Aldi one often fills the bill at an affordable price. They are a good place to get dried herbs and spices (a smaller selection, but have some organic ones, and a great price), avocados (best price!), good price on bananas, some canned items and organic vegetable broth (both great prices but not low sodium), raw cashews, and nonfood products like paper towels, paper plates, food bags and wraps, etc. I go to Aldi for certain items at great prices and have to go to other stores for a larger selection of items and brands. Some items are not carried all the time, such as the various pastas (often organic and/or legume pastas), but they are great when you can catch them. The prices are usually very good. Thanks for including Aldi. I so wish I had a Trader Joe's near me, but it is over an hour away. :( Blessings!!❤

    I ate canned potatoes growing up. Don't remember them being offensive and it was a case of you eat what's put in front of you. Now the chickpeas pasta, I bought it off of a well-known doctor's website and I have about 12 boxes of it. Do you want it? I cannot choke it down

    We don’t have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s nearby, unfortunately (I miss those, Wegman’s, too). We do have Aldi, though, and I was thinking of trying it out. Even though this didn’t seem to have a favorable haul for you, definitely think it could still be worth checking out. Do you happen to recall if they have raw cashews? That seems to be a hard ingredient to find around my area. I used to get them at Wegman’s.
    On an unrelated note, Reebs, I’m not sure if anyone else shares this same sentiment, but you really remind me of a calm, more zen version of Janice from the movie Mean Girls.

      @@WellYourWorld But, seriously, potatoes in a can! Some of the food stuffs coming out of the States are an insult to human dignity. The big-player food industries gave up on public health as a starting point and out of principled greed. Food is, from their professional angle, a product. The deficiencies of each product are overlooked, while any supposed nutritional qualities are trumpeted forth in advertising. How could this have gone wrong? How could the market's hand have deceived us with such calculated indifference?
      Anyway, I've been on the same health curve as you guys for approximately the same number of years, and it's been great to have your company.

      Don't go by this video. It looks like they're talking about packaged foods and totally skipped the fresh produce and frozen fruit and veg that are cheaper at Aldi than almost anywhere else. My local aldi has 10 pounds of potatoes for less than $6 right now. The next cheapest place is Walmart where it's $8. At their website you can see their weekly sale flyer. Grapes for 95 cents a pound, Gala apples $1.99 for 3 pounds. Last week mushrooms were .99 cents per 8 ounces. People who don't really have the option of paying a little more somewhere else or who would rather not pay more if they don't have to can save a ton of money.
