I knew something was different about her. She is half persian. So a little bit of persian culture in her, such as politeness and eager to study and spirituality. I really admire her. Best wishes for her and her family. God bless her and her family.

I'm so sick of every media outlet interviewing her focusing ONLY on her black half, giving full credit to solely her black mom for everything, and completely ignoring her Iranian half and Iranian dad's contributions. Everyone is so completely infatuated with her being "black" that her true self gets buried alive...thankfully she makes her best effort to let her Persian side shine through whenever she can...but let's be honest here: her name is a FULL PERSIAN name and her getting accepted to all those Ivey League schools is very abnormal for a black person BUT very normal for an Iranian student...so people really shouldn't get all that excited or impressed because it is very common for Persians.

Academic excellence is not abnormal for black people.

I mean usually when shes interviewed its for something that is black owned and by a black person or at something like essence. plus she is always selling herself as black plus she is on a show that is about being black and black culture so yea they are gonna focus on that. but she always shares pride in both sides she calls herself a black girl with the last name shahidi. I think its cool she's so in touch with her black side and her Persian side. so I don't think her true self is buried because she is black which is her true self and she is Persian which is also her true self.

Soheil Z Your anti-blackness is showing and it's quite ugly. There's a way to advocate without throwing subtle racism. Yara makes it very obvious and apparent that's she proud of both of her ethnicities, but comments like yours are particularly why she advocates so heavily for her black side.

+Sabreigha I'm definitely not racist or anti-black...my fiancé is black and my daughter is the same mix of Persian and black as Yara...with that being said, I'm just annoyed by the fact that people are so excited about a "black girl" getting accepted to some Ivy League schools and black media showing her all this extra praise, when in reality its really a "half black and half Persian/Iranian girl" that got into those Ivy League schools and NOT a "black girl." Like I said: it really would be an achievement worth praising IF it really was a 100% black girl that was going to attend an Ivy League school, however, its NOT the case. It's very common for Persian/Iranian students to attend Ivy League schools and those schools are full of Persians. In Yara's case it's just another Persian student attending an Ivy League school...very common news and NOT worth getting all excited over it.

Black is black regardless of composition. She still is a black girl, she still does identify as being a proud black girl, even if she is not "solely" 100% black. In an era where college attendance is on the decline in the US and more and more teens would rather be a celebrity than have a professional career, Yara's decision to actually attend college and advocate for education is well deserving of praise. Whether it's "common" or not, to be accepted into a good university IS deserving of praise. My goal was not to insinuate that you yourself are racist but that in fact your comment had very racist undertones. To belittle a race and basically assume that black excellence is rare or beneath the accomplishments of other races is...disheartening to say they least. You pretty much stated that the reason she's smart or able to get into an Ivy is because of her Persian ethnicity, which is not only offensive to her african american side, but also belittles and discredits all the hard work she put in to get herself in
