No question, the best drama series of all time, and probably the most underrated. You feel like you know these people, and that they're living the situations portrayed. Ed Asner captained this show beautifully. The guest stars were also well chosen. Antony (sometimes spelled Anthony) Ponzini just breezes through this episode as the Italian restaurant owner who doesn't need the favor of publicity. Then you realize who this top notch character actor is, and all the soaps, primetime shows and movies he was in before he died--including his memorable appearance in the cult classic film Desert Hearts. Thank goodness for the five seasons of Lou Grant!
Can't believe theyre talking about Greensboro, NC. I lived there for years, now only a few miles away. The University of North Carolina original location is in Chapel Hill, but there's also one in Greensboro and several other locations across the state.
Pro-wrestler Ric Flair was adopted. I heard about how, recently, Flair learned of a long-lost brother. However, when the brother tried to reach out, Flair refused to talk with him, claiming that since they were both in their 70s, he didn't see the point. Some people, man, they just don't have any empathy.
Alas, people who are adopted always hope their biological parents are - Mother, Beautiful, Loving. Father, A Handsome Hero. But like the rest of us their parents are ordinary humans. They should just be grateful that a. they were not aborted & b. Hopefully been raised by nice people who loved & cared for them. Personal opinion - those who donate sperm or eggs should Not have the offspring turning up at the door demanding a relationship etc. They were only trying to help infertile etc people to conceive & did not want to become parents themselves. They either should have been Warned or been given Total Privacy or Compensated for the emotional distress of having complete strangers intrude into their lives. Also think it is Most interesting that to Adopt you have to be Financially/Physically/Morally in a Fit State & yet to have your Own child there are NO conditions!
Such a story in this way about the RESTAURANTOWNER is realixtic. Couple of years ago a German Cook and Restaurantowner in a smaller West-German town got a Micheline Star. at first he was thirilled about it but not anymore after his usual " bread and butter " clientel stayed away out of fear beacause of the crowd and growing prices. So the man had begged the Michelin comittee to take back the star and his customers came back Also true ofteh stories about mothers or parents who did not want(ed ) to be reminded about their volunrarily given away offspring. out of one reason or the other
The southern accents in this episode are insultingly bad. One of the few complaints I have ever had about this series, but just really bad vocal coaching - over the top caricatures. That notwithstanding it’s a great episode.

WE need more shows like this today - social dramas (comedies) that take an honest look at things.

I had not seen this one until now. Wow! Very powerful.
I agree.
What's the deal with Animal being in only a couple of scenes in this episode?
And in this episode, special guest star Video Calibration.

It's the mom from The Wonder Years
That's it! Thank you.
Seven years before. Amazing that in that relatively short time she’d be playing the mother, not the daughter.
That is Alley Mills, the final wife of [the now-late] Orson Bean. There is both a joke and a warning in that, and, sadly, both are the same.
Thanks! I was wondering where I had seen her before.

12:17 ordering lunch. No please, no thank you. Waitress robotic. Why are Americans so cold & impersonal?
I was going to say typical New Yorkers but they are in L.A.
