I'm not good at at words so I apologise if this is rambly and doesn't make too much sense but I hope at least some of this is helpful.
The fake creams are normally made of chemicals and surprisingly a type of air dry clay! They never really hold their shape well and sort of melt once cured making the piping look more flat.
I've never used caulk so I cannot add any input on that silicone however is best coloured with mica powders or oil paints. Acrylic tends to make it have a chemical reaction which is why it becomes so hard to pipe. Its also a lot better at holding its shape and is very flexible. 100% silicone is best as it won't crack or shrink! I normally scratch the plastic before piping as it helps the silicone stick better. I make phone cases with fake piping so I know a bit too much about all of this haha!

Oh heyy this is stuff used in Sweets Deco (some folks say Fake Bake.. but that's not the right term) and Decoden (Phone Cases decorated like frosted treats). The store bought stuff (We used to call it Wipple back in the day because that was the mainstream store bought brand but there's other brands now) was always so pricey for the small amount you got so most Sweets Deco/Decoden crafters have used Silicone and Caulk to make their Creme. You can probably find tons of the old creme tutorial videos still up on RUclips. Some folks even used Air Dry clay that was liquified with like water and PVA glue. Clear silicone was used too mixed with glitter and it gave such a neat see-through jelly-creme-y vibe.
You will want to scratch up the surface that you put that creme on or it will pop off.
You can make your own piping bags with cling film so as not to waste money on buying actual piping bags too!
Watch some old "Decoden with me" vids and you'll see how to put down nice rows of creme onto your surface. I believe Star Tips were the most popular tip to use because it made lovely scallop dollops. ❤
Most of the folks I used to follow who made and sold Decoden cases always made their own Creme with Silicone because it was far more cost effective and easily customizable compared to store bought wipple.

I just ran across this video (I watch you quite a lot), and I have to say that your giggles while doing this with the silicone just tickled me. I absolutely love your giggle.

Spackling also works nicely for faux cream or frosting. It can be thinned and colored easily. It dries fairly quickly, holds its shape, and cleans up easily. It probably would not hold up too well in your pocket, but for decorative items it works fine.

100% silicone, in a tube cures by moisture in the air. The smell as it's setting can be very strong. When you introduce acrylic paints, you are mixing moisture in which makes it start setting faster. That's why it started stiffening up. It works the same as when you add corn starch into silicone and make a molding putty. Sometimes it'll set in as little as 20 minutes.

❤ This would be good for fake desserts! I'm thinking cakes and doughnuts!!! In miniature, of course, for dollhouses or fairy gardens! Or even for food shaped pendants! The vinegar smell will dissipate a little, but will always be there....

From what I've read, moisture causes silicone to cure quicker. So what if you used pigment powders to tint the silicone instead of paint?

Acrylic paint causes silicone cualk to set faster. There is a light and fluffy hole filling cream that is often used for pipping fake whip cream. My grandma used a hard setting frosting and painted it, plaster is also an option.

I had no idea what that fake cream was until I checked out the link you had for it. That stuff is pretty cool! I loved your experiment, too. Very interesting to see the comparison between the three of them.

Now I'm quite curious about it! Thank you for sharing much love my friend ❤️❤❤❤🤗

That would come in handy in doing the frosting but with that cake mold everyone is doing. The heart shaped cake mold too. How cool is that?! Great idea, Steve!! Thank you for sharing this with us all. Have a great day! ❤

I've seen some of these fake icing mixes that are like plaster or spackle. Silicone would be a good material to use too. Some brands even have a few colors to choose from. 🤔🤔
OMG! Everyone looks at me like I'm nuts when I say caulking smells vinegary. 😮 Finally someone else who agrees with me 😊

Great inexpensive alternative. I was chuckling a bit when you said cork(caulk). I managed a hardware store for many years. One of favorite customers,an older African American gentleman came into the store my first week asking for cork. I walked him to the back of the store and showed him the cork. He started laughing. “ Oh no baby I mean caulk!” We both laughed and were friends from then on. 😊❤

What a great idea!! I've been wanting to get a way to make a pattern on some new molds I'm making.... wanted to give trinket box molds a bit of a dress up! This is going to be wonderful!! Before anyone tries to make molds with this let me explain that you run the risk of silicone sticking to silicone! DO NOT TRY IT ON A LARGE PIECE FIRST!! It took me a very long time to make the first mold where I added silicone on silicone successfully!!
Stay safe, you do you, protect yourself and stay crafty 👍👍🛎️🔔🦋🦋

I was doing other things while listening to you. You kept talking about using "cork," and I kept wondering how cork was going to work with what you were doing. I finally got a chance to look at my screen and what did I discover? CAULK, not cork. 😂😂now it makes sense.

Thanks for the much cheaper option!! I bought a kit with the ready made "cream" - after about 3 weeks, it had shrunk and fell out of the tiny ice cream sundae cups I had put it in!! It was a complete waste of time and money. However, perhaps the "cream" in the kit was different from the ones you got?? Anyway, I will be trying low odour silicone in future - thanks again 😊❣️

Thank you, this was very interesting, I love when you try things and processes- and also invent new ways and recipes.
I was wondering, is there a difference in weight between them after they dried? If one were to make a whole phone case, is the weight reasonable? Thank you again, I love that you make things simpler and more straight forward. Sometimes instructions that comes with products seem to have been written by a frustrated goblin...
