@BlackLightning20101 heheheheh to be honest, I truely thought she was a contralto but she really is a Soprano. Lyric soprano to be correct. I say that because the color of her voice isn't dark itself. It's just husky. Plus she doesn't maintain a dark, manly sound throughout her vocal range like true contraltos. Toni Braxton, Cher, Anne lennox, etc are examples of true contraltos. Plus if you listen to operatic contraltos, you'll see Mariah's color/timbra sounds nothing like it haha.
"The Roof" has one of the most subtle and understated productions of her entire discography, and I also think it's one of the best songs Mariah's ever recorded originally. It totally gives a sense of introspection and withdraw.
I love the MC era vocal range videos! Great work! I'm really intrigued by Mariah's vocal evolution through the years especially the shift in 1997-1999. And then of course her bounce back vocals in 2001-2004 in glitter and charmbracelet eras.
From butterfly she sung My All in Spanish (Mi todo) and from her whole career there's Hero (Heroe) and Open Arms in Spanish too. There could be some I forgot, google it!
I guess Butterfly is really the in-between voice for mariah from the voice we know in the 2000s (which is by all means great) and the ringing vocals of pre-1997. I feel as though her nasality and grit was perfect on the Butterfly album and the earlier live performances, but increased significantly and thinned toward #1s and rainbow. The nasality in the Rainbow album I think was what bothered me the most but by all means her vocals are always beautiful, every era of MC has a defining vocal quality that can be commended. The tone she had in Butterfly is really captivating and one of my favorite albums/ eras. Just a topic of discussion did anyone notice that belts in Butterfly, Outside, Whenever you Call, and My All sound more daydream era, whereas Breakdown, The Beautiful Ones, Honey, Fly Away have that "butterfly era defining" grit to the belting tone.

i remember watching an interview on youtube and she said she did it because of critics saying she overused it, and not everyone liked it. but she kept them in the background because of the fans who loved it. but i think rainbow album she didnt care and she did what she wanted!

Many head voice notes though! And there's loads of whistles just used for background vocal decoration though :P
Notice how the head voice register is half the video for this album,the first 3 albums were very little head voice maybe a 'Oooh' and that was it.
This album got me through so much. I will always have the utmost love and admiration for her...just for this one album.

The song key only allows a C3 or a Bb2, this is a solid C3 with vibrato fluctuating at C/B for a brief moment.

Yes head voice is rounder and more connected I know this Mariah uses both registers thats why I put hv/falsetto in the video DESCRIPTION
