What size bonsai wire do you use for this ? I was looking at plamts at home depot one juniper is 27$ i was going to buy one but i didnt know how to even start it was so bushy and big , im going back to get one after i get some supplies.
Oh man, not quite sure what exact size of wire I used here (it also differs between aluminum and copper). I‘d say about 3,5 mm for the trunks, 2 for the primary branches and 1-1,5 for detail wiring (aluminum) Go get it!!!
@@Bonsaifly thank you for your response!! Im going to order some assortment of wire and start going! I use organic soil in my garden i hear “organic” soil isnt used in bonsai and was recommended to use a miracle grow type soil with long lasting sloe release plant food but my soil already does that with all the compost/organic matter / amendments that are feeding the soil for the long term, i can add more vermiculite to make it more airy if needed but i hear conflicting things on “organic” soil i guess it depends on one’s definition of organic soil. Cheers 🍻
Haha I think they were originally produced for Cannabis but they branched out. I am glad they did, all my tropicals do much better since I have their grow lights
Hi, I am looking at getting into bonsai. Is this something that a beginner can do? And would you recommend buying a bonsai just outright? Or doing something like this?
I am not sure about wiring like this if you’ve never done it. However this is a very basic starter material and is a great way to start. Now is the perfect time of the year to start too. I recommend you watch „how to make a Bonsai“ by Bonsai Mirai and then go for it with young nursery stock like this.
Hello, I have a quick question that I hope somebody can help me with.. Can a young juniper survive if there is a ring of bark removed from the base of the trunk? I bought a Chinese juniper (Stricta) from a nursery and while wiring it I accidentally managed to strip basically a complete ring around the base of the trunk, it’s about 1cm high and goes around the whole base of the trunk (😳) I didn’t realise quite how delicate the bark would be and I can’t find much online in terms of what to do.. Will it survive? Should I tape up the wound to stop moisture getting in? Any help is much appreciated!
Yes but it looked like any other young conifer you can buy from a nursery and plant somewhere. Now it does look like a mature tree out there in nature. What Bonsaifly has done is to make it look the way it might have looked tens of years in the future, if left alone in nature, exposed to wind and sun and neglect…. He did all that with a snip and wire. A true artist in my humble opinion.
It’s a cultivar of Chinese juniper called ‚stricta‘. It looks similar to a Procumbens but tends to grow upright, rather than creeping. It’s a needle juniper, so no soft foliage
As always expected from you, great work!
Literally just found a large clumpstyle cypress in the trash. Will try this! Thanks for the inspiration.
cypress are DOPE. i just got a dwarf hinoki on the cheap, it's going to be interesting.

This one is still in the same pot. It’s going to be repotted some time this spring (styling was in autumn of last year).

Very nice! Will this juniper always have spiky foliage or will it change to the softer one when it matures? If so, how long does it normally take?
This particular cultivar never gets scale foliage. A lot of the other varieties usually develop it within 1-2 years of stress free cultivation

Probably will not survive. Its called girdling when tree bark is stripped around the trunk. Arborist use this method to kill trees.
