The Cranberries were an Irish band. Northern Ireland identified as British, Protestants whilst Southern Ireland identified with Catholicism. There were a number of paramilitary organisations the Protestant were pro British and for the Queen and the IRA (Irish Republican Army) who were Catholic and wanted an independent Ireland combined with northern Ireland. Whilst protestant Northern Ireland were predominantly Protestant and wanted to be part of the UK. Religious battles ensued between Protestant and Catholic, IRA and UDA. Marriage between Protestant and Catholic or mixing could be dangerous. There were campaigns of violence on both sides, kneecappings, firebombings, and a variety of other bombings both in Ireland and on the British mainland.
The IRA planted 2 separate bombs in waste bins in Warrington town centre on the British mainland. Two boys were killed with around 54 people injured. It was before Mother's day on 20th March 1993 and the boys had been shopping for mother's day cards, one boy Jonathan Ball, was three, and Tim Parry, was 12. One of the boys died at the scene and the second a couple of days later after his life support machine was turned off. The IRA claimed "credit" on behalf of all the Irish people.
From what I read Dolores Riordan had been touring the area with the Cranberries, they were Irish and the deaths of the two boys had a big impact on her. Hence the lyrics it was "not me, not my family", that were responsible. She might be Irish, her family might be Irish but the IRA, did not represent either her or her family.
The words another child slowly taken was said to refer to one of the boys, who did not die at the scene but a few days later after life support was removed.
British forces were sent to Ireland to a certain extent as "peacekeepers" although there was no peace to be kept. There were atrocities on all sides, UDA, IRA and British army just an atmosphere of festering violence. There were longstanding religious divisions which you could see in the Orange marches and which actually related to the Protestant William of Orange from the 17th century (over 300 years ago). Hence the cherubs, crucifix and religious references.
Whilst you see the uniformed British forces in some ways it seems there was a civil war in Ireland, a religious war which was also why the British army was there. They could not tolerate each other, entrenched loyalties, remembered atrocities which were perpetuated, brought up surrounded by violence, factions committed to a Catholic united Ireland or a Protestant Northern Ireland as part of the UK, but the end result was often some mother grieving for their son. Protestant, Catholic, British how could any of that be called winning?

In March 1993, bombs hidden in trash cans by the IRA in Cheshire town England killed two little boys, Johnathan Ball 3 and Tim Parry 12, that what this song is about, the stupidity and senselessness of violence and “the troubles”

Hello Milly and Friend. Thank you for reacting to this classic song. The voice of Dolores O'Riordan(who sadly left us way too soon) will forever be unforgettable. The song was about conflict in Ireland. In essence was an anti-war message. And what war does to a society. A message that still resonates today. Thank you again for this terrific Reaction. God Bless. Love and Peace. ❤❤🕊🕊🙌🙌

The war (conflict) was called The Troubles. I recommend looking it up. England still holds Northern Ireland. A country split in two.

okay this is late coming but maybe you'll see this. the visuals with the children are showing us that they are dressed up to look like cherubs. you said cupid but that's not quite right. a cherub is an angel represented as an infant. so the visuals are telling you the story of these kids who were lost , sacrificed in the name of religion.

Definitely check out Linger, Dreams, and Ode To My Family also all by The Cranberries, All completely different vibes to each other, Most people who go down The Cranberries rabbit hole just want to go further, they've got bangers for days 🔥🔥. Other songs after that I'd recommend is When You're Gone, Animal Instinct, Promises, Just My Imagination, Salvation, Ridiculous Thoughts, You And Me, Analyse, Time Is Ticking Out, Never Grow Old and Tomorrow. (Sorry if that was too much). The lead singer of the band she was Dolores O'Riordan. They're from Ireland (County Limerick) she also has Solo songs too, Ordinary Day, When We Were Young, It's You, Angel Fire, so many gems.

Yup Unfortunately you guys are old enough to understand this just like Other Version Zombie more relevant today than it was back then and they're still fighting but with way more powerful accurate weapons like drones which is a new add on in badwolves that everyone likes in that version so it updates what Dolores was trying to say all those years ago about if nothing changes nothing changes but us and more ways to wipe us out that's why today especially this song means way more than people realize it means even back in 1994 it was about kids being killed in another senseless war that could have been discussed diplomatically but since WW1 the world has been on another collision course of epic disaster like Dolores talks about here in my favorite song of hers Zombie.
This song has more meaning than all the songs combined in the last 10 years which unfortunately says something about where are species has been heading since 1916 like she said in this powerful song just like my other meaningful favorite song from 1994 Keep talking from Pink Floyd which are society has stopped for along time now and if we don't wake up fast there will be another World War if we keep up the track we're heading on it's a recipe for catastrophe on all levels now never thought possible in 2023 but like me and my WW2 veteran family members that are still alive think specially after the last 3 years if eye awakening moments of nobody saw coming until it was stearing us right in the face and we couldn't look away no more but unfortunately it was to late another massive war in Europe that could have been avoided from communication and diplomacy once again we chose poorly
It's like one my favorite songs Folks Keep Talking from my favorite bands Pink Floyd when Stephen Hawking did his famous Commercial in the 90s saying as long as Mankind keeps communicating the human race still has a chance to turn it around no matter how close we get to another catastrophic global disaster like now we face in 2023.

I apologize is this sounds weird, but this song breaks my heart, and the only ones that seem to understand the lyrics aren't from a western country... Which says a lot.
