      You don't even notice the difference and you can make them in any shape you want! I always get a lot of compliments on them, and people are surprised it's basically just painted straws 😂 Let me know how it goes!

    I tried it out and i love it!!! I didnt have wire so i used wool, needless to say it took about 3 hours just to get the structure (i made the one with the 30 straws) thank you so much for making this video 😄😄😄😄

    • @DIYwithLily
      @DIYwithLily  7 лет назад

      Thank you 💖 Oh, I feel yah... When I tried to make it the first time around, I used some transparent nylon thread, and omg, I couldn't get it to stay put! 😂 Even with tons of knots, somewhere it ended up always being a bit loose and the whole thing collapsed! I actually admire the fact that you were able to make it work!!!

    • @madamecochon-swinia-varken6773
      @madamecochon-swinia-varken6773 7 лет назад +1

      It was actually really hard to make it because i had to use only one thread and it was super long and it always took ages just to put one thread through the straw and it was also very hard to put wool in a straw that already had wool in it because its thick but in the end it looked very nice and i love the way it turned out i am very thankful for your video :-)

    Himmeli is an old Finnish Christmas decoration, made from hay straws and yarn, they kinda look like chandeliers. They were hung from the cottage ceilings. It's pronounced /ˈhimːeli/ and the word is derived from the Swedish word himmel, meaning sky or heaven.
    I'll most likely make the 30-piece one, I like that shape a lot

    • @DIYwithLily
      @DIYwithLily  4 года назад +2

      Oh awesome! In German we also use Himmel for sky, so I always wondered if there was a connection!

  • @davegillett7135
    @davegillett7135 4 года назад +2

    I have two suggestions. One is to use full length straws. The other is to use half length straws. This might help to minimise waste.
    Everything else is wonderful!

      Omg thank you! Was trying to find these online for our center pieces and they are going for $20-$50 per piece, that's a lot of money since we would need 20 of then. I didnt even think of using straws, but I'm glad you made this video. ❤

    • @DIYwithLily
      @DIYwithLily  5 лет назад

      Ohh! Yep, that would add up to quite a sum 🙀 And you would end up with 20 himmeli sculptures in the end 😂 A few looks cute in a home, 20 not so much! Hahaha

    A couple of tips!
    - make sure you don’t use the bendy straws. If you include the bendy part, it’s likely to make your piece look a little lopsided
    - if you’re like me and too lazy to do the copper wire, try glue dots instead! This will hold together the pieces, but still flexible enough to move it around as needed. Glue dots inside the piece, then hot glue at the end outside.
    - Don’t use normal thread! This will just make everything more complicated
    - if you think you can get away with only using hot glue… you’re wrong 😂 *speaking from experience
    Hope this helps someone :)

    Thank you for this video, it's exactly what I'm looking for! I never thought to use straws, kinda blew my mind. Do you think acrylic paint would work in place of spray paint?

    • @DIYwithLily
      @DIYwithLily  5 лет назад +3

      I think so! The only thing I would say is, start with a thin layers and if you want to avoid brush marks, use sponge. It will take you a bit longer to get to the same opaque gold (plastic in general is a bit hard to paint). Or maybe, if you find it, use paper straws and it will be way easier to paint with acrylic paint 😊

      If made with wire, they are actually quite sturdy! But of course, they are decor pieces, so their main purpose is to sit on a shelf or on a table/desk (this videos is now almost 2 years old, and mine are still looking good 😁).

      Her voice is fine. Don't really like it? Don't really listen to it! The directions are great, but if you are that bothered, you can always mute the video and just watch what she's doing. She does a very good job demonstrating, so you dn't need the sound.

      Swooosh, and this one just totally went over your head 😂 The whole point of my videos is re-creating decor (etc.) for cheap and easily at home, without too many tools 😉Different audience, I guess 🤷‍♀️
