Using the simulator to practice approaches is a great tool. In today's video, we are going to fly an instrument approach ILS Runway 10L at Portland. In the comments below share with me your experience using a flight simulator.

I just passed my instrument ride this past Sunday. It was tough but fun training. The sim definitely helped me out!

I'm planning to get back into flying. I took all my IFR training in the 80's in Southern California. Never got to take the test. Going to use a Sim to get back all my knowledge and practice flying so when I go out for my BFR I'll be more prepared. A lot had changed. So many nice things to make it easier to fly.
Thanks for you videos and teaching.

I passed the written IFR test months ago and just started doing IFR flying in my put together simulator system (computer, scenery, flight controls, external control of GPS systems, etc.) . It is perfect to practice all phases of IFR flying in the simulator! I have gone from thinking how to fly all the approaches, departures, enroutes, etc. to doing them in the simulator ---mistakes and all. Really will make the actual IFR flying lessons much easier and cheaper. With all the videos out there like yours, I am getting pretty good at understanding the processes of flying IFR without ever having taken an actual lesson to date. I am starting out using only the 'old ways' of flying IFR before moving over the 'new' GPS methods. I figured if I can fly with the 'steam gauges' I will find it much easier flying using the GPS. Appreciate your videos------

I have use my sim from the start of my Private Pilot's License, Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot's License. Now I am using it, as I am go thru my CFI. Sim are an awesome tool for learning. Keep up the great videos Jason.

I use this for Instrument Approaches regularly (hoping to get my IFR checkride done in the next several weeks). It is extremely helpful. I find that It's also helpful to simulate briefing the Approach, Pre-landing checklist, ATC calls etc...

I have just started to us a sim this week to help with my training. I have been working with the same plane i am training in. Great video and I also took your ground school to pass my written test. Keep up the great videos....

I’m loving my sim! It’s been great watching your videos in the instrument ground school then practicing it on the simulator.

Thanks for the great video. This explains the instrument approach very well. I have been using X-Plane 11, as well, and I’ve been using it with the Noble G1000 simulator. Highly recommend this setup as it’s highly realistic ! Keep the training videos coming!

I was ready for my IFR checkride and then COVID hit. I went up with my CFII in actual IMC yesterday after 4 months without lessons, but practicing approaches in sim fairly regularly. I found myself pretty comfortable in IMC, which was a pleasant surprise to me. Also worth pointing out I was still flying regularly solo so my basic flying skills hadn't gotten too rusty. I guess my take-away is the sim (x-plane 11 with a yoke and rudder pedals, sometimes also Oculus Rift S) is a surprisingly effective tool for maintaining instrument proficiency.

I’m just getting started with my sim as I’m beginning to do the Instrument Ground School. It’s the reason i built it and look forward to using it as a tool for instrument and G1000 proficiency (I’m using the Noble Flight SiM G1000 suite, which now has native support for X-Plane 11).

Tips of mine: use the heading bug to determine maximum turn. Should never use too much correction especially close in; the increasing sensitivity will help you with just 3-5 degrees towards the localizer.
Also if using no gyro, rely on swiveling with just half standard rate turns to correct.
Always stay on top of the glide slope, pretend the glideslope is the surface of water and you don’t want to be underneath it!

I practice in the simulator, helps with muscle memory and procedures. Not so much with maneuvers or precision landings.

I always hated stimulators! Just pull the power back & drop to 2,000. SP IFR is great fun!!

One of those mistakes I did make on the sim (this was in VMC!) was circling to a runway with tailwind. I was predetermined to land on one runway (and did great) but landed with a tailwind. If circling I’ll always call wind check and verify landing runway.
I also crashed once because I was reading the altimeter wrong, and I still had the “hood” on ):

I use my home simulator a lot to do instrument approaches on Pilotedge. I try to make it as realistic as possible-- I don't use pause, for one thing. It's good practice for the procedural parts of instrument approaches as well as the ATC comms. As you pointed out, landings are not so realistic in the sim.

The transponder was on standby for the whole approach... how’d he get into the Charlie? Haha JK love watching these to help refresh me on my IFR training. It’s so easy to lose.

try pilotedge you will be forced to take the sim seriously and realize mistake and situations you will encounter. The trial is free. I am not affiliated in anyway I just wish I had piotedge, forflight and GPS when I learned lol.

Hey Jason - saw you OSH but you were busy so didn't get a chance to say hi. Question: my flying partner says you should remain high on the ILS and fly the GS down to the final intercept rather than descending, level off then intercept. Which do you do ?

If I may ask, what subscription level do you have with Foreflight? The georeferenced plates would be a definite help.

Hey Jason, thanks for this video. I’ve always wondered what your thoughts on investing/ using a flight sim.
I find it reassuring that your using a sim to enhance your training. How much money did you invest in your sim Peripheral attachments?

Hey Jason, God bless. Could you please do a video detailing the pros and cons of a leaseback and your opinion on it. I can't afford a plane and am considering a leaseback so I can get my PPL and build time as the plane pays for itself. Thanks.

Very nice and informative as always. One question and one request, how do you see the x-plane platform for GA training, I mean is okay if I practice my landings and manoeuvres there?
And can we have that beautiful MzeroA repaint for our Cessna in X-plane please :-P

Yes it would be great to know what sim set up Jason has. Looks like the sort of set up I would like to have. Where did he buy all the sim parts including, yoke, cockpit switches, six pack instruments, thrust levers, pedals, etc?

I am guessing that is a More expensive yolk and rudder pedals, which gives you more sensitivity to what it would really be like, I am just using the keyboard Because I don’t have a joystick.

On a side note, I do love the ability to look through the execution of those PTS/ACSs and being able to drill them into memory with how to set up the plane and configure. IFR starts July 6 for me, excited for the SIMs and other hood time.
