Great job Danny with Wanda's help. I thought your goats were going to chew on your shade cloth but they didn't. Your goats are cute. I Love Hank digging up sweet potatoes. Thanks
Thank you so much for this video I built an A-frame greenhouse and ordered a shade cloth to go over the top of it and I could not figure out how to make it windproof but you gave me the great idea of unscrewing the ridge cap putting the shade cloth under the ridge cap and reinstalling and then screwing every rivet in.
My daughter & son-in-law closed in half of my double carport. He made "window frames" for it. I bought 90% taupe/tan (to go with the brick on the house) shade cloth on a 100' X 15' roll. We cut it to size as we stapled it on the "window frames". He also made "storm Windows" which are added in late fall. These were plastic pieces on a roll stapled to the frames. That was 4 years ago and it is still in great shape although the plastic storm windows have some tape repairs. I have kept plants in it over the winter with no problems and heat coming from a space heater to keep the cats warm enough. There were other % on the shade cloth but for the cats I wanted the max protection. I ordered it on-line for home delivery. Home Depot was the cheapest for me in Louisiana. In the SW, you can buy it in the local stores. I turned up the sides and sewed it down before putting grommets on the edges to use as shade for our RV we lived in almost 20 years ago.
We're in Zone 8, we have our shade cloth attached with hooks at the bottom & side so we can pull it up to let the full sun or partial sun in when we have cold spells or cool, cloudy weather.
Love your Greenhouse! Your watering system has given me some ideas for sure. I'm moving from Texas to Tennessee in a month and am looking forward to having a yard that I can put some raised beds in. I have rheumatoid arthritis and there are days when getting around is very hard so having an easy way to water will be a huge help! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! Have a blessed day!!
What about ventilation and/or air flow? Maybe you could improve or upgrade that too. In the CT countryside almost every home greenhouse has multiple air venting/flow and usually a strong, permanent exhaust fan to moderate for fresh air & even temps during high heat! Fresh air is a necessity to healthier plants (like any living thing, person,or animal). Stagnant air increases risk of disease and failure to thrive in a close tight greenhouse. Just my 2 cents, you are the master farmer and an amazing team of true self reliance. Love what you do to encourage others.
This is full of great info. I am thinking about putting in a greenhouse and never thought about a rain barrel next to it or in it for water. Thank you for the information!!
Love your green house. When it's time to change the barrel, can you please share the video? I'm trying to get more ideas when I get a great house.... Some day in the future lol If not, no worries. I'm sure you and Wanda are pretty busy with other projects. Thanks and God bless!
Danny, you are definitely smarter than the average bear! Congratulations on a great build! I hope the new greenhouse performs the way you and Wanda want it to!
I love that you put it under the top roof and not many people would have thought to slide the ladder under the cloth. You know you are good when other builders appreciate your work. I would love to one day work with you on a project. DO YOU HAVE AN OVERFLOW ON THE BARREL? You had some taller stuff on the left side last year so you may want to put that shelf higher or only go part way , Instead of changing the barrel you could just wrap it with black plastic unless you want change it for aesthetics.
Yes the overflow was the large pipe. We had a video clip showing the overflow but Danny forgot to mention it and I forgot until I had the video uploaded. Sorry about that.
Interesting set up, I'm glad to see you added a fan, it's a good first step. Have you seen and considered solar powered vent fans, some even have adjustable thermostats. It's a great age we live in for mad scientists like myself. My 3rd son has been teaching himself camera security systems and led lighting systems with a little help from me and his grandfather (we are both Electrical Engineers). I have now (with my son's help) a system that I can view from anywhere, check all the sensors for temperature, humidity, water use rate of self watering and get alerts of any problems with my indoor gardens. I even know now when the CO2 levels get to low for optimum plant growth. Just a suggestion, you might want to have the shade cloth on a track system that can be deployed when needed using a small electrical motor, come Winter you'll want all the light you can get plus some led lights to add a bit more.
s fetterly I had a solar system coming but the guy had a brain anyrousym and it was stopped. We can only do limited things because of the cost of projects.
@@DeepSouthHomestead I understand, there's just never enough to do everything. My 3rd son has an Amazon Prime account. Often I'll have him order things I need and ship them directly to me and get huge discounts and free shipping, I bought a membership to Harbor Freight and got multiple membership cards that I shared with him and another family member ... I could give dozens more example of ways we save on things needed and we share our resources, knowledge and abilities. Building a family and community of giving people means no one needs to rely on just their resources and abilities. When someone needs, the word is spread and those that can help jump in and in no time things that are extremely difficult are done with ease. This is the way of YHWH and it just keeps growing every year. I'm sure you have begun to experience this in your life. A new farmer that just started consulting for this year, relied on 1 very experienced farm hand for nearly everything. Things were great until that 1 farm hand broke his leg. Suddenly this new farmer was way in over his head. I knew a few things that helped and some of the other farmers I work with helped out and we were able to get him 2 experienced farm hands to get him back on track. 1 of the farmers that brought equipment in to help the new farmer get caught up was looking for trees to harvest for lumber this Fall, sure enough the new farmer has over 10 acres of land dense with trees he was hoping to clear in the future. Now those 2 farmers are the best of friends and working out a lumber harvesting agreement that will profit them both with 10s of thousands of dollars more than they could have hoped for this year. Problems are nothing more than opportunities waiting to happen. Give and it shall be given unto you ... I wish you were a couple thousand miles closer, you'd fit right in around here!!!
@@DeepSouthHomestead That's great. Imagine sharing that Amazon Prime service with 8, 10 or 12 people that share their money saving services with you. It takes trust and a willingness to live by biblical values ... it takes time and most of the risk years ago was mine, but slowly it has become a powerful force for good in many people's lives. I'm happy to see your daughter and granddaughter there on your farm and all the other visitors you have ... great community you have started!!!
Danny yesterday a person came to see me who i believe pretends to be my friend but actually means me harm.Yesterday i was working in the garden and had put the Porchtime playlist on.When he walked up the video about honesty was on and you were talking about people who shake one hand and stab you in the back with the other. You should have seen his face!
Hi looks real good.Hope the fire ants stay out now.Smart gravity system. The shade cloth will help to keep the heat from baking you all's greenhouse.Where can I get a barrel like this? The goats are looking real healthy, and it's cute how they follow you two around and want to see everything you're doing.Have a nice weekend.Keep cool under your shady tree at lunchtime.Be well you all.♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡.......
Danny, have y'all ever heard of a Cucuzza squash ? We started growing them , this year, and they are now, our favorite squash. It comes from Sicily and it makes a wagon load of squash. They taste better than Zuchini and they grow to about 3 feet long, and they are climbers.
I wish that you would’ve shown the screws that you used in a close-up of your work. I have a small A-frame greenhouse on the block foundation and I am trying to figure out how to secure it because I live in zone 8B, hurricane territory and would like to install it with as much windproof ability as possible. Those grommets are so large what size washers did you use what size screws did you use? Thanks for any help you can offer I’m doing this by myself and I could use as much advice as possible your structure looks identical to half of my greenhouse
LOL. I'm the same way. It seems the older I get the more I push my bedtime back. Sometimes I get more done in the quiet of the night than I do in the stillness of the day. :-)
I really love your greenhouse ! I could see me working in a greenhouse like this. Have you ever used shade cloth outside in your garden? I don't know how to build a frame or how to go about doing this. I think this would be helpful for small gardens

You can take some extra black plastic, and cover the barrel. That would help with the algae.
Great job Danny
You always do such neat and tidy work!!!
Love what you’ve done!! Smart farmers!! ❤️
Your watering system is brilliant!
I sure hope the changes in the greenhouse works. Please do an update on the shade cloth!
Awesome setup thanks for sharing

For the barrel try wrapping black cloth or plastic around it for now. Maybe just a black sheet for $5 from walmart. Love your setup!
You could drape the white barrel with black plastic to prevent the light from getting in. Just tape it on so It does not move.

WOW! Thank you for going through your watering system. That is so informative - very helpful.

s fetterly that sounds like an AMAZING symbiosis
I was thinking you would put the shade cloth on a chain and pulley system so that you can roll it up and down as needed.
Looks great! Looking forward to seeing that greenhouse fill up with edibles this winter!
Freedom Acres Ifinally finished the floor and the other pots. Thanks for your help on the front pots and floor.
You are so welcome! I love working beside y'all. It's a joy!!
Well done!

Awesome setup Danny, I'm kinda jealous, lol
Looking good! 👍💙👍
Can always add a pvc roll up on bottom of shade cloth.
Very well explained and pretty easy to do! Thanks for sharing. God bless!

WL CAPLINGER Yes but have never grown them.
Such a good idea Danny Excellent Job! I know how hot it probably was doing this project!
thanks
That looks great! How do you keep the goats from chewing on the shade cloth? Mine would love to shred it-they need to 'sample' everything!
Awesome greenhouse
I hope that solves the problem for you! Love your little helpers 😳
I’ve been told that if you put a small piece of copper pipe in the barrel it will prevent the algae from growing. Don’t know if that is true or not.
Gayle McArthur Yes its true i use it in my cattle and goat water barrels.
Gayle McArthur TY 🤗I didnt know that. I may give that a try w my chickens waterers.

That goat loves you! His little tail was wagging when you reached over to pet him. He isn’t going to be dinner....is he?
scrapper900 No she is one of our breed goats.

carol parrish No but we are going to try this year.
Try a vent in the ceiling !!
Hey Danny where do I buy shade cloth for my Greenhouse
Growers Solution You can find them on the internet.
man you're a fast worker ;) I think a lighter colored keep it cooler
Color options were limited in 70% and amount of money we had to spend.
Yes, I was thinking the same. White or sand color would reduce the heat even more.
Who makes.custom ones
Beautiful greenhouse
