Andy Wallace, who did Gojira, is one of my favorites. Just the grandmaster of the basics; Does most of his work on an SSL desk and can get some magic going with minimal EQ and fader moves. Values working fast and in broad strokes, to finetune later. It helps capture the magic, keep music lively and organic where it's often completely beaten to death by production
Andy is the greatest maybe i’m showing my age here but i grew up listening to his mixes, so i think they are somehow ingrained in my brain as how a mix should sound haha 😅😅
I feel like Erra's last album definitely deserves a spot here. To me, it's the absolute best mix I have ever heard (aside from Hollow Bodies from Blessthefall naturally) It literally is so wide, like everyhing as a place in the mix, it sounds abslutely huge (snare souns insane), the guitars, the ambiance, evertything is really incredible. My only down point would be the screaming vocals who happens to lack of warmer/mid frequency for me sometimes. But Carson Slovak and Grant Mac Farland are amazing, especially to me since like Eye Of God, (when they stopped to mix the snare very thin and to mix the kick to be a bit clicky) and since then, their release with Like Moths To Flames, Erra, Phinehas, Wolves at The Gate, ABR... have been really insane in many ways and especially in the mixing territory

Misery Signals Controller has an insanely amazing mix by Devin Townsend. I think the guitars shine brightly and the bass stands out just as much. Drums heavily sampled but still has that beautiful dry snare sounds that stands out a lot
I don't know if anybody knows about the dude, but Kirill Konyaev has a really thick but clear mixing style. His snare sounds and use of ambience and effects layered in is my perfect reference for this kind of Modern Metal. Other bands who I loved the mixes of this year would be: Starset - The Breach (perfect Modern Rock mix to my ears) Cepheid - Lie of Providence (Aggressive Post-Hardcore/hybrid metal that feels cinematic in its presentation and mix style) Erra - Scorpion Hymn (obvious choice, but it's tight, aggressive and the instruments still feel present and full in the mix) Reflections - Noir (Thall, but full fat, not skimmed. Hi, Miami! What do you think about song of Beast In Black band - Highway To Mars (from 2021`s album Dark Connection)? However, this is not an extreme band ;)
I feel like the mix is great but the master is way too compressed. I really liked the singles they released before the album, but whenever I try to listen through the whole thing it just gets tiring.
While the guitars are starting to sound more natural and not so harsh in the treble in the last years... the drums nowdays sound like everyone uses the same drum plugin with the same preset. Most new releases have that shotgun in the cave snare sound, gets boring really fast.
I actually used 'Den Helige Anden' from Vildhjarta as reference track for my latest song before their newest album even got released. Somehow felt like robbing a bank and getting away with it. >:D
Would you say that when you have to find a reference song that the song you are going to use as a reference has the same guitar tuning as the song you are mixing?
