Every time I learn more about the history of Hawaii I'm disgusted, sickened, and disheartened. Thanks for being so educational and making fantastic videos!
Just.. please don't stop doing this. I will continue my support here, on Twitter, on Patreon, and irl through word of mouth in whatever ways I can. If and when I have the means I vow to do more, with absolutely no expectation or pressure of frequency or quality. Just keep doing the work if and when you can for those of us that, for whatever reason, are more limited in our reach or resources or capabilities. Thank you, and good work comrade.
Just discovered your channel today and have watched 3 videos so far. I just wanted to say that each time I am surprised to learn so much more than what the title would imply. Great work. i will be watching more episodes.
Fantastic episode. Your editing, scripting, and voicing already seem to have improved over the previous two in a very short time (not to imply they were subpar in any way of course).
@@newpractice All I readed is in spanish. Search about tourism in Costa del Sol and La Manga del Mar Menor. In the 50s-60s, when Franco was the dictator of spain he impulsed the turism industry without barriers and legislation about it because he thought that turism could open the country, in the diplomatic aspect to the world, in that time Spain was very isolated diplomatically and economically because Franco supported the axis on the second world war. The EEUU were and important actor in this opened to the world, they made some economic inversion on spain tourism and helped Franco entering the ONU in exchange of the creation of military bases on the country, in relation to all of this there was a famous incident whit a nuclear weapon in the touristic Palomares beach. In conclusion, the EEUU helped Spain broke the isolation a this made Spain an tourism country. Sorry for my english.
I read about the situation in Spokane, WA just before watching this video and reading your comment. All public school librarians are being laid off or reassigned there, and the idea of libraries as a public utility is more important than ever
Oh how it pains me that my childhood home was built on the brutality of colonialism. I grew up in Hawaii, and the public schools had classes devoted to teaching the history of the islands, the Hawaiian language, and portrayed the system the Hawaiian people created as egalitarian and just. Hardly makes up for the crimes but it's a start I guess?
Potential catharsis of seeing some of these ubertowers (empty cause the owners don't live there) getting demolished in civil wars? Dubai? Istanbul? Doha? Riyadh? Place your bets now.
Here in Salt Lake, the Mormon Church signed an illegal treaty with the Shoshone after the war to cede all the land in the county to the church. The valley land was subdivided and sold but the canyons were kept as de facto public property to for recreation, timber, and quarrying for public buildings. The church wouldn’t allow mining, but a few illegal mining towns popped up. Mining interests pressured the federal government to assert its legal right to the land and almost all church land in the state that wasn’t cultivated became federal land. Mining expanded greatly, and once the silver and lead was gone the mining towns became ski resorts, who basically tell the forest service what to do. Second homes for out of state millionaires as far as the eye can see in some places. Most of the space that hasn’t been seized for rich people tourism is still free to the public and served by mass transit so that’s nice.
Always cool to see another person from your city on a small channel! I wish we had a train to go into the canyons, especially in the winter. Not sure how it would work logistically, but I heard about a proposal by some students from the U recently (last couple years)
As someone who grew up in Hawaii, I burst out laughing at your "Hawaiians toiled under an oppressive fuedal system" claim. It would make sense that's what is taught on the mainland. My god.
@@newpractice now that I finished the video, I wanted to say you did a really great job. It's nice to see someone actually cite Trask and stand up for Hawaiians. The usual response I will hear is "well if we didn't take them someone else would have like the Japanese". It's uncommon to find people who understand the history! You could have gone even deeper, the Hawaiians were really screwed by westerners. They had already signed treaties with 127 nations and had emissaries sent all over the world when they were taken. It was pure colonialism. Side note, the kohala ditch is actually still running as well and you can go take rides on it on little rafts like a water slide. Although somewhat slower moving haha
@@MrKyle700 thanks, as a white amerikan the absolute least I can do is hold space for native voices. and those are interesting points, i always want to include more stuff but a lot doesn't make it into the final cut (plus that leaves room for future videos 😏) and that's a really messed up "usual response"...
Episode 1: How dare they plant some grass and bushes on top of that building instead of just leaving bare concrete! Episode 2: How dare they make that pool so that pool wall is hidden! You really "know" how to pick your battles and priorities. Very definition of petite bourgeois reformism.
Like you,, my information on the indigenoous culture and constitution of Hawai'i before colonisation has emphasised the harsh feudalism, ultimate authority of the monarch and generally horrifying nature of pre-colonial society. Though I am not right-wing enough to think that colonisation was a good thing despite being told this. What sources would you recommend other than the ones at the end of the video? Is there a book which sums up that history?
If capitalism was just on its own terms, Hawaii would be a place where the local population is rich beyond measure instead of the majority of the homeless people you see on Oahu.
Haha, that was a surprise. I'm a huge fan of this show and I was born and raised on Kauai, so none of this was particularly news to me, but I love how you're saying a lot of stuff I never hear outside of here. Btw, I live in Honolulu now and the political situation here is actually a bad cartoon. If you ever run out of content you can always look to us for your daily dose of disappointment.
this is like that cities skylines guy but without cities skylines
keep it up
Just checking in to say that i think free public utilities are pretty cool
I to think that free public utilities are cool.
My country stole all the land, but they're saying sorry and they reaaallly mean it. Except when we need to build a pipeline.
No worries mate they'll be well compensated by all the oil that leaks into their drinking water

it sucks but there may be brighter days ahead if we work together
You ever look at Zuckerburg's face, and think about how the RPG-7 has an effective range of 500 meters?

I loved this episode, greetings from Spain, an state where the tourism industry did a lot of damage to our coastlines and public terrain.

Great, now I have another thing to be mad about.
"And I love him, and want him to play with my hair" should be the standard legal disclaimer.
