- We've bought two new piglets for raising out for food. This time we've purchased Duroc pigs from a nearby farmer. SORRY for the two minutes of silence. The copyright-free music owner claimed a copyright after all.

You're exactly right, but you know how it is, we use things till they can't be used anymore. Almost there with this crate though.

Oh, my goodness. Please splurge on a new dog kennel. Maybe find one at a garage sale? Goodwill?
We took a dog (in a brand new kennel) to the vet. The dog had to stay for several days and in the mean time, the vet sent another dog home with OUR KENNEL, and we got this dilapidated thing back with our dog. That's why we used it for hogs afterward.

When you buy piglets, healthwise what are the outward signs to look for? You wouldn't want anything sickly or with sores?
These pigs look a lot like Tamsworth pigs, wow. I've never actually heard of this breed, I'll have to do some more research on them to see their heritage and all. How did they turn out as far as fat to meat ratio? I'm thinking we don't want to get American Guinea Hogs bc their fat content is so high. Do you guys sell feeder babies? I saw this was made a year ago, so I thought maybe...

Hi Jenn! These were not our normal piglet breed of Landrace and yes they were too fatty for our taste. In 17 years of raising pigs we liked these the least. But we used a different processor than normal and maybe that affected them as well. Our landrace breeder passed away and he instructed his sister to turn his boars and sows into sausage. :( We're having trouble finding anymore Landrace and hate to raise anything else because when you've put so much time and money and effort into raising them , you want to enjoy them.Our oldest son wanted to raise a boar and sow for piglets and for a couple of years it went really well. (Newborn piglets are incredibly amazing little creatures.) But then they got enormous and the food bill was far more than what he was making from the sell of the piglets. And one day some wild hogs came up and enticed them out of their pen and they just left. Huge hogs are as strong as a freight train and if they don't want to stay, you can't hardly keep them. If you hear of any Landrace down there, I would so appreciate a heads up. Thanks so much for stopping by! Kim

These piglets are big, I picked up a couple 4 weeks ago. I finally weighed them a couple day ago, they weigh 20 and 24lbs. Do you know how much yours weigh?
Hi Katz Family! These guys are big, I think they weigh around 40lbs each. But a quality of the Duroc breed is that they are very efficient at turning feed into weight gain. The gentleman we bought them from was also feeding them non gmo cracked corn that he grew and milk from a local dairy so I'm sure that combination also played a role in their size.
So how much feed per day do you give them? You have a wooded area fenced in, about how many square feet is enclosed, and how often do you rotate that area?
We will feed about two scoops per day per pig when they are small. Once they hit about 100 pounds, we go to the constant feeder. We enclose an area roughly 100'x100' and move them when we feel like they have completely depleted the resources in that area.
Does your fence have posts? Did you use the trees for posts? Also what height did you choose. One last question how many paddocks do you have for them?

Can you feed them quality dog food?
I once had an inspector from the Department of Agriculture tell me to never feed dog food to any livestock. The reason was that he inspected dog food factories and described the ingredients as "un-identifiable dead animal products". Even worse, in some states, companies can get a waiver from inspection if they pay enough money for it.
Pigs, are scavengers and even the cheapest dog food is healthy for household pets and has about 18% protiene. Some dogs on it live 20 years... I would sneak some into the feed. Especially food thats expired or on sale. a pig can eat an almost rooting carcass...
YOU EAT WHAT YOU FEED THEM.

What would be an alternative to dry dog food? I know a raw food diet is an option, tried that and had rotting meat around the yard cause one of my dogs wouldn't eat it till it was rotten...
How much do pigs that size and breed. cost
Right now they run about $60 a piece.

Durocs have much better meat than landrace hogs
I see they are boars. They cut them for you when you bring them to slaughter or you have them cut before? I always had females when I was a kid no males allowed.
Whenever we buy boars, we have them cut by the seller. We once raised out a boar without having it cut, but we had it butchered at about 5 months old. We were told that if you did it this way, you couldn't tell the difference. But we could.
SixteenChickens man my mother cooked one not cut we threw the pans away house stunk for a year that was the stinky stuff I ever smelled yuck!!!!
I think these pigs are shy. When you put your camera near them, they become sensitive to your actions and start to panic and run out of the cage. So when they are eating the feed and drinking water, pls don't use the camera or camcorder to film them. You will only scare them and they will try to run away.
Yes, they are very skittish but will get more comfortable with us as we continue to feed and visit with them. They were raised without much human interaction and they need some time to relax. Thanks!
SixteenChickens You have a point there. I fully agree with you that they need time to be comfortable. With time, they will be able to live happily with us and not shy away from humans.
