- Very interesting....the song is amazing and totally different from the other 2 songs that I have heard. But, I do believe that this is for a movie. So it totally makes sense. Having heard this song now, I really want to put this one on my playlist and listen to it in my car. I am amazed at how good these guys are at writing music. Every song I have heard is good. Do they even have a bad song? I cannot imagine.

This was for the movie Suicide Squad. Tyler didn't want to make a song what the executives wanted, he said he's gonna do his own, and if they like it, they can use it. And so they did.

This was the soundtrack for Suicide Squad, that's why they look like heathens. :)
This song is Tyler kind of roasting his fans, who were pretty toxic at the time, for being very mistrusting of newcomers to the fandom. It fits right along with the Suicide Squad movie though. Tyler said that he submitted this and if the studio didn't like it then they would have just put this on their next album. This hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 I believe and I think they were nominated for a Grammy for it.
Twenty One Pilots, or TØP for short, was started by Tyler Joseph with 2 of his friends in Columbus Ohio. They released one album, which was self titled, in 2009 before the other 2 left because of family and other personal reasons. Tyler and Josh Dun had met at a venue after being introduced to each other by one of the original members of the band, and they quickly connected and became best friends, and Josh was the first one Tyler asked to fill the spots left by the other two members. It's been just the two of them ever since.
Their first album together, Regional at Best, released in 2011, is not available anywhere except RUclips, as after it was released they signed with the record label Fueled By Ramen and redid about half the songs from that album for their next one Vessel, which was released in 2013. This is when they first started to gain some real traction outside of Ohio. The album focuses a lot on themes of mental health, suicide, depression, death, and how day and night can affect our moods. It's my favorite album of all time, with Migraine being my favorite song ever.
In 2015 came the big blowup in popularity with their album Blurryface. Stressed Out reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won them a Grammy, and Ride hit #5. They went on 2 worldwide tours for this album. Blurryface is a character Tyler created to represent all of his depression, insecurities, anxieties, etc. and each song deals with some of those things. Their big tour ended in 2016 and the guys went on a very long hiatus, with no social media presence, no new music, etc.
In 2018 they released their album Trench. It's a concept album about a place called Trench with a city called Dema, where bishops control the people and make them feel depressed. The album is about trying to escape Dema, which is a metaphor for beating our own thoughts. It continues the story of Blurryface as well.
The guys also released 2 singles in 2020 not connected to any albums: Level of Concern, a song about the state of the world and quarantine, and Christmas Saves the Year, which is exactly what it sounds like.
None of their songs sound even remotely the same. I believe Tyler is one of the greatest lyricists and songwriters of all time, what he can do with words is amazing. Some of my favorites I'd love for you to check out are Migraine, The Judge, Morph, Chlorine, Guns for Hands, Addict With a Pen, Kitchen Sink, and anything else!

@@jonathanpeless2504 nope it does go deeper since tyler when asked to write it told them he wouldn't just make it for the film he was going to make a song that could be exchanged with a song from his album and no one would know it was for a specific film and since he puts a lot of meaning into his lyrics he definitely went deeper than just a film - perhaps not as deep as his regular stuff but its definitely meant to fit in with his discography
@@jonathanpeless2504 In agree with Paisleigh, they actually asked him to make a song specifically about gun violence if I remember correctly, but he wanted it to be more than a movie song. He actually said: "As I was writing the song I was like, I want this song to be a Twenty One Pilots song first. And I want it to resonate with our fans and make sense at our show. Even though the themes in the movie inspired the beginning of it, as the lyrics came together, and as the song came together, I realised, like, this was our song."
So there's definetly more than that. It also ties into the Trench storyline, which ist another reason it can't just be about Suicide Squad.

Twenty One Pilots work with Metaphors a lot. Most lines mean more than they seem to mean, it's actually very interesting and takes some time to completely understand
Scenes are from the movie "suicide squad", including the guy with the tattooed face.
The song, to me, is someone who usually stays out of trouble goes to a party with a friend who lives a bit on the wild side.
At the party are a number of unsavory types... heathens. At the end, the party is surrounded by cops about to bust them all. Looks like the friend he is singing to just "might be one of us"... the heathens with a police record.

This song brought back so many memories of growing up in Fayetteville NC in the 90's. Kinda like the emo 10 Crack commandments. There are rules that took a bit to learn, but that sudden moves line hits hard, may be rule #1.

I saw twenty one pilots live in 2016 right before stressed out became such a big hit. I have to say josh (drummer) and Tyler (singer) are some of the best performers I’ve ever seen. The energy they brought to the stage was phenomenal. You should listen to some of there earlier stuff.

that aside, knowing their faith beliefs and mine this song I have interpreted to use in regard to how the church outreaches... like he’s saying, don’t cram your faith down others throats, everyone has a history and if we would take our time and be a witness it would be more effective because we’re all equal in our sin. Just how this song effects me...

They made this song for the movie Suicide Squad, but it is still so 21 pilots. He refers to his fans as friends, so he is calling his friends/fans heathens because of how they are not really open to new people joining the clique, and if they do, it is really difficult. His fans are made up of people who have big internal battles. So, maybe they are murderer's and psychopaths. I know that I might be a psychopath.
These guys just do not get it...it's a shame but it's nice to see different views...

The song was made for the movie soundtrack, but I've heard that it's about his fan base. Their songs have heavy mental illness themes.. so "psychopaths" and "murderers" are more about mental health (depression and suicidal thoughts).

TOP is amazing. I highly recommend Migraine and Ode to Sleep. If you really want to go down the rabbit hole, they have a series of videos that have a storyline that is basically an alternative universe. Love these guys

But the meaning is something of their own and it could mean a couple different things. Some people think it’s about Christian witnessing, but I think it’s about him allowing new fans into his fanbase. He’s talking to a new fan and telling them about the fan base and what to expect. All my friends are heathens(different, or take life uniquely) take it slow. Wait for them to get to know you. Cause the twenty one pilots is a protective, proud fanbase. It’s a wonderful fanbase, but it intimidates new fans all the time.

Yeah, this is a movie soundtrack, the suicide squad. I haven't seen the movie but I LOVE this song. It's one of those that give me chills. It's the song that made me learn their name. I am so bad at remembering artists but I took notice this time and of course when I looked them up I went, oh yeah, of course I heard them before. Duh! :D

the part you asked about, you love another murderer sitting next you, speaks of the irony of being in prison as well as how many thousands of murderers you have walked by, some you might not know are, and yet you sit next to them, and these are all children who are lost and loved by someone.
This is based of a film called suicide squad and the people in the song like prisoners and the person with the tattoos and the skalles they are in the film and the tattoos are just done by really good artists who actually did the make up for the films and the song great reaction.
