We have owned our HF digger for about 2 years and love it. Is it perfect, nope, does it get a lot of work done yep. I have used it to dig up the roots of a 40" diameter tree so that I could push it over with my tractor later. We used it to help level out an area we built a garage on later and much much more. 👍
Great video! I bought one last year, and I love it! I want(ed) a sub-compact tractor with a backhoe also, but, after finding out the tractor, without the backhoe, no matter the brand, starts at about $13K, then the backhoe attachments start at about $7K, I began more seriously considering the Harbor Freight option. I bought a "weld-on" thumb for mine, which I bolted on, and it adds a whole new world to the machine. For example, I had a huge pile of large oak rounds (20"-40" diameter) given to me, and I used the machine to manipulate them toward the splitter. It was fabulous! I would caution folks, I was moving some pretty large rocks (300-500 lb), and I peeled the bucket apart like a banana, at the pivot point. The steel just plain ripped, right along the welds on both sides. Basically, It was too powerful for itself. FYI, There's a cool FB group dedicated to this machine, where a person can get ideas, share experiences, and generally discuss all things Harbor Freight Towable Trencher. Cheers!
The reason it's slow is because your running it at idle, the higher the RPM of the engine the stronger/faster the hydraulics will be. This is true of almost all hydraulic pumps. Hope this helps
Wow, almost 6k! Keep it up.bro. I have been enjoying the content. Love to see u do something with the 2 trucks that u covered a few videos ago. Keep grinding.
This is really awesome for the 'backyard excavator'! Perfect for maybe pools, trenches, digging small tree trunks, etc. I must have one! The thumb would be cool for moving tree trunks and logs also...I installed a ball hitch on my lawn tractor to move my utility trailer around and I'm sure it would be perfect for moving that around the property. Thanks!!!
Pros: There's been many times over the years that I could have used that. I've dug plenty of ditches on this property with a shovel. We just hired a guy with an excavator to clean out ditches and culverts on our driveway (long driveway) a week or two ago. Cons: I think you could get hurt pretty quick, if you're not extremely careful and willing to go slow.
I had one several years ago. I ended up burning up the motor, the hydraulic pump seized, ripped the original bucket in two, ripped the pins through the frame and elongated the holes where the rams mount on the boom. I bought a used Bobcat E50 from United rentals to replace it. I ended up building a custom trailer for the unit to permanently mount to with wheels and a ring hitch so I can attach it to my tractor. I custom mounted a cheap push mower to the end where the bucket mounted. I use the rear remotes on the tractor to control the arm so I can mow the grass around my pond.
I have had my trencher for about a year. It is not fast, but it can dig faster I can with a shovel.. I have the same problem with the front pin holes getting oblong. Two other problems I had with mine that caused delays in using it the first time. One was someone stole the tires off the pallet while in transit and I had to have another set sent. Also the hydraulic valves were leaking on mine. That is a well known problem and a replacement was sent no questions asked. Same for the replacement tires.
Great review! Harbor Freight has a lot of good things for the price. Now may not want to use to make a living (working eight hours a day for 5 days a week but great for project every 3 or 4 weeks). I know its slow but you have to crawl before you walk and walk before you run and thank God your legs still work! By the way coming from an old man in Fayetteville AR, if you got that land for the price you paid where you live then you are way ahead of the game. Close to major highway with almost all utilities. Not bad not bad at all!
Well done review! I've had mine for over 7 years now and it's still going strong. Don't worry about welding around those holes, just replace the curved pins with straight hitch pins and the holes will be fine. I have many videos on my channel that may help with some of the questions you brought up. I will subscribe and keep watching so you keep digging.😁
Oh wow so cool to see this from you! I watched a lot of your videos before i bought mine! Yeah i saw someone else in the comments saying to replace the curved pins with straight ones. I definitely plan to do that. Thanks for the comment and its so cool again to hear from you!
I was thinking of buying one this past spring. Ended up finding out about the Chinese mini ex and got that instead. Happy with my purchase. The mini ex is slow in travelling too but I can move it around my property. Been doing some ditch digging and digging out stumps.

Dalton that’s a great little machine for what you’re doing. Good plan use it for now and get some bigger when the projects get bigger when you know more what you need. You should have no trouble selling it. I think there are plenty of homeowners out there just waiting to dig up the water line and fiber optics cable. 😃🤣😃 Thanks for the video. It is better quality than I thought it was going to be. 👍👍
I need one of these for around the home. Cumbersome, but I wouldn't use it too much besides some landscaping around the house. Using the mattock and shovel gets me a workout but the next day is rough 😂
Excellent video description of your HF backhoe. Obviously you realize some of the shortcomings/dangers, hope others who purchase do too. Definitely don't want to operate/move in a yank. Think you are spot on with acquiring a compact tractor with a back hoe attachment for your homestead. Wishing you all success so you can purchase that tractor. Look into outfitting with a front dozer blade, too. I have JD 750 with a 365 hydraulic (up/down/angle) blade, can't tell you how much work I've accomplished with it and I'm looking for a backhoe attachment now. PS: can't help admiring the large tree (assume it is an Oak) above your home in the background.
Thanks! Yeah I’m thinking hard on a subcompact tractor with loader and a backhoe attachment. Yeah my property has all kinds of trees on it! Several very mature Oaks, pines, sycamores and maples
Never knew harbor freight had this. It's exactly what i need at home to move excess dirt piles left behind from constructions projects. Can also clean up stumps in the yard.
They sell magnetic trailer lights... definitely not highway rated, you can change the coupler for a 2inch, you should order extra pivot pins (all locations as they can break pretty easily)... There are many upgrades you can add to it including a mechanical thumb, there isn't a place to stow the outriggers on the machine. There are upgrades to increase hydraulic volume to allow 2valve operations at the same time, also a good upgrade is to add a predator 420 or larger engine with electric start and add some lights to the machine. The outriggers need to be teeth down... If you need to work while on pavement use some hefty wood blocks under the outriggers running the outriggers upside down will cause them to break
Install lever extensions with the outer handles bent out at a 30° angle. The two middle handles can be bent out to make room for larger handles. Nice video.
HFT has magnetic lollipop trailer lights you can stick to the boom to tow. Where I live if what you are towing doesn't carry cargo "it is not a trailer". Examples are concrete mixers and BBQ smokers and are exempt from permanent lights.
I've had my towable trencher/backhoe for 3 years now. It still runs fine and digs as well as it ever could, but I have overstressed it several times and had to do repairs. The hydraulics are strong enough to rip the bucket in half. I recommend adjusting the relief valve a little for lower pressure. It could use more ballast at the back. Some of the pins are easy to forget when greasing. There's a couple of videos about an upgrade flow rate pump. Not higher pressure, but faster operation. And with higher flow you can run multiple functions at once without the boom dropping.
I am just sharing. I didn't buy the fold up trailer from Harbor Freight. I bought mine off of Amazon. Besides. I changed the bolts to the yellow high grade. Same with the tow chains. Then. Bought new 13-inch tires. Rated for 80 mph. I changed the hitch. To a 2 inch high-grade hitch. I only tow a trailer around 62 mph. Works perfectly. Same hubs. Same leaf spring. I added more LED lights. Front and back of the finders. I would take that across town if I could get a license plate for it. I would do a light kit. One day I will buy one. Thanks for sharing.
I welded flat washers to the pins for the oblonging. Other thoughts: swapped the two left paddles - for left/right and boom extension - just made more sense, push to go right, pull to go left, and the boom out/in, world of difference. Final thought - have a Kubota BX, thought about hooking to that while digging - but folks consistently break the hitch off the frame when doing that - certainly not built for it. Project coming along nicely!
@@marchingmoto watched your 'field' vid - I'm putting in a 1/4 mile driveway with a bx - and can use it for client jobs, it's a great machine - it'd handle every bit of your projects up on that plateau easily - and carry around those RR ties to boot lol
@@RavensRidgeNC i’m gonna sell my f150 and put it towards the BX fund hahaha. Hopefully the RUclips revenue picks up and i can afford one before too long
A lawn tractor or quad is what is intended to move this rig around where you need to, just a tip. UTV has more weight as do 4x4 quad runners. A popular use for these is digging septic tanks and drain lines.
Wheelbarrow/cart eletric motor kits would make it mobile if ya can find them rated for the heft of it. There about 500$ after getting a decent battery. Great video. Keep up the good work.
I have wondered if a person could use a set of tailer jacks mounted one jack behind the tires on each side for stabilizer. Sure needs a mechanical thumb for picking things . There is a few videos of these beung modified. If a person had a older clamped out mini truck that ran a person could mount the trencher on the truck to make it more mobile. I am impressed by the channel growth.

Beats the hell out of breaking your back with shovel.. I thought at first that it was going to end up staying hooked up to the hitch on the truck for stability😊
Speed up engine rpms and see if that helps speed up boom option that is how i speed up the wood splitter on the tractor. It pushes the hydraulic fluid faster .
these are nice little machines if you have a couple acres and need to do some occasional digging, bought one about a year ago, there's a couple of companies that make them, i got mine from Northern Tool, did a little homework when i was shopping for this , the Northern one has a bigger engine than the HF unit also only has 2 sticks so it works more like a regular back hoe does , a little better built than the HF unit and the real deciding factor was it was on sale and was actually cheaper than the HF unit, not sorry i bought it, would i build a 5 acre pond with it ? probably not , but i worked for 20 years with under ground utilities, anything beats shoveling!!! good informative video though !! nice job !
Well, it's still better than shoveling! Does seem a little pricey. Just wondering if you could have bought a used small excavator for the same or close to it. You're also pretty good at explaining everything. You could be a trades teacher, I think.
For what it is, full price is probably a little much. But they go on sale a lot. The chinese excavators are usually in the $5-7k range so a few thousand more than this. Thank you! I haven’t heard that one before haha
I didn't hear you mentioned it anywhere in the video but when you spoke at the engine and you said you leave it at idle that probably has a lot to do with the slow speed of your Hydraulics I guarantee if you throttle up that engine the pump will work faster
Look at the arm bucket conection, arm and boom conection. They're designed from an excavator(they look like they belong to a larger rig. That's because they made the arm and boom out of smaller steel. They're probably buying that from some cheap China equipment co., using smaller and substandard steel for the strength to load equivalent. It would probably be better for a lifting a person for tree pruning or roof or gutter work, window instillation on homes. Those outriggers should be stationary, slide and pin out. Be careful.

Wouldn't most of your complaints about speed be wiped out when you start revvin the engine after break in. I know it'll still be slow but should be significantly faster than current. Cool place (property) man, glad you found what works as far as RUclips, seems like a cool channel to follow. Growing list of projects folks wanna watch, good luck to you.
i would rather have spent an extra grand or so and just bought 1 of those cheap china excavators , you can find them new for around 4-4500 , much more useful imo.
Those tip over easier than this thing does. Friend of mine got bucked off of his when it got hung up on tree roots and it fell over and pulverized his legs and pelvis. This is at least lower to the ground so easier to get away from.

That is exactly what it feels like too lol
Speed up engine rpms and see if that helps speed up boom option that is how i speed up the wood splitter on the tractor. It pushes the hydraulic fluid faster .
I think it most likely will. I’ll do the oil change and test it out this weekend
Wish I had a use for it, I would get one. Good video.
Thank you!
I see a lot of potential converting to be able to drive that thing 😂
Yeah its very limited having to claw itself around
Looks like it will pull behind just about any yard tractor. You should consider pads made from old tires for when you are on concrete or pavement
That’s a good idea
these are nice little machines if you have a couple acres and need to do some occasional digging, bought one about a year ago, there's a couple of companies that make them, i got mine from Northern Tool, did a little homework when i was shopping for this , the Northern one has a bigger engine than the HF unit also only has 2 sticks so it works more like a regular back hoe does , a little better built than the HF unit and the real deciding factor was it was on sale and was actually cheaper than the HF unit, not sorry i bought it, would i build a 5 acre pond with it ? probably not , but i worked for 20 years with under ground utilities, anything beats shoveling!!! good informative video though !! nice job !
Once the engine is reved up the hydraulics will speed up
Well, it's still better than shoveling!
Thank you! I haven’t heard that one before haha
try putting it on the back of one of your trucks if you could I would watch that and might try the same thing.
Definitely an interesting idea
looks like if you pull the out riggers off at the 90 point you could put them in from behind for storing travel.
I haven’t tried that yet it might work
You should put a tow hitch on ride on lawnmower
I didn't hear you mentioned it anywhere in the video but when you spoke at the engine and you said you leave it at idle that probably has a lot to do with the slow speed of your Hydraulics I guarantee if you throttle up that engine the pump will work faster
Yeah it probably would make a difference i just haven’t tried yet
Can I modify it to attach to my tractor and the tractor hydraulics?
Great video. What brand of pants are those?
Duluth coolmax relaxed fit. Unfortunately they just discontinued them and replaced them with the sweat management pants. They’re pretty good too
It needs a hand brake for those wheels, to prevent that accident from happening to your where it started rolling into the ditch
I’ve been thinking that for sure. Wish it had one
Step one cut yellow cut off switch (oil level sensor) step two use.
after the retaining wall, how about you dig a pool? that would get you 1 mil subscribers!
Hahaha i could in the field!
Be careful.
Why not swap straight from the wheel to the outrigger?
This video! I dig it! hehehe......
over 14,000 views in less 12 hours that's amazing.
Definitely my fastest growing video so day!
Moving a backhoe like that is hard on the cylinders and seals. And if you’re on an incline that sucker will run off with you!
It looks like a red praying mantis lol. 6.01k! Congrats! I would think messing with it would void the warranty.
It looks very interesting for sure hahaha
If you what to get a like more speed with the hydraulics rev the engine up a little bit
Is it me or is the house leaning😂..but good video
Check out my other videos lol. Its leaning haha
Would the hydraulics move faster if you idle it up?
Potentially. I need to change the oil first
@@marchingmoto I was just wondering. I don't know anything about that stuff. I thought maybe more speed would mean more pressure.
Seems its like a new born baby, cute to look at but alot of work lol..
That’s exactly right lol
Probably just some bigger wheels to go highway..?
If you crank the engine up to full throttle the hydraulics should work faster
1k in a week.. thats like 140 a day.. 🎉🎉🎉 promotions next .. get a bigger post 📦 😂 the packages are gona start coming 😂😂
Lack of mobility kills it for me, rather have a small mini.
9000 views and 6000 subscribers? Come on everyone if you watched please like(if you did) and subscribe please. This young man is a credit to his family and a real hard worker. tBH I don’t understand mechanical things at all but I watched because he is so impressive👏👏👏🤣🤣👌👌👌👌
Haha thank you!!
👀
When you can rev the engine the hydraulics will be faster
I wonder if you can make profit off that thing
Wouldn't most of your complaints about speed be wiped out when you start revvin the engine after break in. I know it'll still be slow but should be significantly faster than current. Cool place (property) man, glad you found what works as far as RUclips, seems like a cool channel to follow. Growing list of projects folks wanna watch, good luck to you.
It will move twice as fast on the OEM pump by throttling up the engine.
I think so, i’ll change the oil this weekend and find out. Thanks!
Buy a crappy 4x4 and mount it in the bed or directly to the frame, with the box removed.
So could I dig my own swimming pool?
It would be slow but it would work
1rd
I see you are utilizing your 2nd amendment rights on your right hip! Great video!!
I love seeing it!!! Especially out in the woods like that!
i would rather have spent an extra grand or so and just bought 1 of those cheap china excavators , you can find them new for around 4-4500 , much more useful imo.
Those tip over easier than this thing does. Friend of mine got bucked off of his when it got hung up on tree roots and it fell over and pulverized his legs and pelvis. This is at least lower to the ground so easier to get away from.
@@jt1364I did get thrown off my mini ex. I went out the side as I was at an angle in a ditch. Figured I fractured a few ribs but am doing fine several months later. Bought a seat belt to keep me in. Haven’t tipped the machine over but it does buck around a lot.
@@jt1364 yes , i guess they are both kinda flimsy . Now just waiting for you to find a super cheap mini excavator from market place and fix it up 😀 would make a really cool series of vids😉
Don't change the pump just up grade the hydraulic pressure line feeding the control valve...for speed and strength....mine picks up the back end of my 2004 z71 Tahoe
2:49 Definetly a BAT deal... 🤦
I laugh when he mentions Chinese as an option as if harbor freight isn't Chinese equipment .
I got one of those for free.
Looks like it could be dangerous if someone stupid got on it
your stabilizing legs are reversed and upside down.
so i cant seem to edit but it looks like in an earlier video you have them installed correctly.
You missed the part where i said i did that on purpose because i didn’t want to put the spikes down on the concrete. 14:37
