- Looking for an easy way to cut down on your water bill? Attaching a shut off valve to your shower head is an easy solution.
These fittings work with all types of shower heads and allow you to cut your water usage without sacrificing the type of shower head that you use.
What's great is you can shut off the water to your shower head without shutting of the water to your valve, saving you precious time in the shower. So, when you're lathering up your hair in the shower and don't "really" need the water, you can shut it off until it's time to rinse your hair.
In this video, I'm going to show you how to install a shut off valve to a hand held shower head...but you can use this with a fixed, rain, filter or any showerhead you want really. Installation is pretty much the same.
You can buy this flow reducer valve on Amazon: amzn.to/2QTJa6z
When we were searching for a shut off valve, we not only wanted something that could shut off the water entirely but just slightly reduce the water pressure. That way we could adjust the pressure to meet the needs of showering our family, like giving our baby a more gentle shower.
Obviously, something else that we wanted was an ergonomic shut-off valve.
Some of them on the market have these tiny push buttons that can be finicky and hurt your fingers. The one we use in this video has a nice, large lever handle. It's built with a ceramic cartridge to make sure that the lever slides easily, even after years of use.
And this wouldn't be a product we'd recommend at The Shower Head Store without it being built from high quality materials. Both the body and lever handle are made from metal so it can take some wear and tear.
Let’s jump into the video and show you just how easy it is to install this part and how well it functions.

Thank you for the info
Any time!
This was exactly what I needed to see. Thank you so much.
You are very welcome, Angie!
I found that usiing one of these knob type shower valves without a head attached when partialy open ,produces a sharp misty spray even when water pressure is low. the main drawbacks are its aesthetic aperence, and limited angle of spray if mounted directly on shower arm pipe. .
@@jordanfrancis1644 Why don't you put the shower head back on and use it as intended !!
excellent video I need 3 of those

Perfect because my old shower had a 1225 standard cartridge, but the new shower is a 1222 posi-temp. I hate those types because the water is set at one standard flow. But I want something like the find the right pressure.
Thanks for the feedback
What happens when you mix a brass valve in galvanized pipe system? Premature water heater failure and corrosion near connections that cause premature leaks. Someone PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong.
latest model hand shower has this feature
Hello! A very informative video. Could you perhaps also explain the physics of it, please? If one has a two-handle tub and shower faucet (with a diverter for choose between the shower and the tub), and then mounts such a valve, how does such a valve stop the water flow? In my head, I have this image that if the both faucets are open, and this valve is closed, the water keeps flowing into the hose until it basically bursts, but I'm assuming that this is not what actually happens. I tried googling how the process works, but I couldn't find an explanation that I would understand.
Hello Маргарита, You are correct, if both faucets valves are open and the shut-off valve is closed, the water will still be running through the main line and the hose. Let me know if this helps
After replacing my bathtub spout with diverter (same has old one that was removed), my shower now has water coming from it while the tub facet is running water, would that be ok the put a shut off valve as you show in this video?
It seems like the new tub spout diverter is not sealing properly, which is causing water to come out of the shower head while the tub faucet is running. Installing a shut-off valve may temporarily fix the issue, but it is recommended to replace or fix the faulty diverter to avoid further problems.
This is exactly what I want but it doesn't seem to be on sale at the moment. Was just wondering how much it would cost on its own and with standard shipping to Australia. Thanks
HI! Thank you very much for reaching out. Unfortunately we don't have international shipments just yet. we are sorry about this.
Hi, very informative. Will this work for me as I want to reduce the pressure of my shower head? I do not want to turn it completely off, I just want to get it somewhere in between to lower the pressure.
This will definitely work for you, Patricia. The purpose of the Shut-Off valve is to reduce your water flow to your shower head or shut it off completely.
Is it easy to reach for short people and is it easy to turn off and on with soapy hands? I would love a large shutoff handle on the wall that is reachable. That would probably be hard to engineer.
Hi Annie! Indeed, this would be easy to use even with soapy hands. You could even use a Holder Mount to place it at arms length and it should be more confortable.
exactly what i am needing. What is the Brand Name
It is called KES. You can order the shut-off valve here: amzn.to/2QTJa6z
Hi Justin, is there such a thing as an on/off shower head switch on the shower head?
Hello Kevin, I believe you are referring to the shut-off valve that can easily be attached between the showerhead and hose, or the shower head and arm. Here is a link for further information:

@@theshowerheadstore Thanks very much Justin for the reply and the link. I felt mad asking.
@@kevinluby4783 You are very welcome. Please let us know if you need anything else.
yes, some shower heads do have a built in pause setting .
Don't you require teflon tape between the threads?
You don't need to put Teflon tape between the thread since it already has a washer to seal the water from leaking.
If the water supply is kept on but the valve is switched to complete shut off, how do things not burst?
Hi Emmanuel! The hose should be able to handle the pressure. At least our hoses do that without a problem.
Question, I often do deep conditioning treatments in my hair in the shower and I shut off the water while I wait for the deep conditioner to work it’s magic. When I turn the shower back on I have to wait for the water to come back to the right temp which is soooooo annoying. Would this solve that issue?
This is exactly what you need! What's great is when your water is at the right temperature, you can shut off the water to your shower head without shutting of the water to your valve, saving you precious time in the shower. So, when you're adding deep conditioning treatments in your hair in the shower and don't "really" need the water, you can shut it off until it's time to rinse your hair again.
@@theshowerheadstore great thanks for your reply! Exactly what I was looking for.
@@edmeerivera2964 You are very welcome
you fixed without providing teflon tape? no lekage problem
There is no Teflon tape needed if the fixture is brand new but if after installing you are seeing a leak from that area, we'll recommend adding 1-2 turns of Teflon Tape.
I know you are the expert, but I would assume that this would cause too much pressure inside the hose. Have you had a lot of problems with hoses busted?
well.. it depends on the hose. If it's our hose, you shouldnt have any problems whatsoever.
I use one on each shower head and hand held and this makes your shower similar to that of a hose with a nozzle. No problems with hose pressure.
Justin, I watched your video and I have ordered the valve. But, I have an important question: How long can one of the main faucets be turned on while at the same time the shut off valve that I install be turned off? I ask because my shower head is dripping. The only way to stop it from dripping is to install this shut off valve and wait until I can find and install a new replacement main shower faucet. By installing the shut off valve at the top of the shower head, I worry about the pipe bursting. What do you think? Thanks.
The shut off valve can be added between your shower arm and showerhead to stop the dripping issue that you have with your current showerhead. With the valve set to off, water will not pass through.
@@theshowerheadstore Thanks for the helpful reply. Is it safe to leave on there for several weeks? I guess I worry that the pipe between the leaking faucet and showhead might burst.
@@tombic6373 I wouldn't leave the valve on and shut-off valve set to on for several weeks. I would only do this for a few minutes. The purpose of the Shut off valve is to reduce the water flow so if your main valve is turned off and your shut off valve is on, there shouldn't be any leaking coming from the Shower head.
@@theshowerheadstore Thank you. I appreciative your advice.
@@tombic6373 You are very welcome
How about a switch type or button type?
Hello there, thanks for contacting the shower head store regarding this. I will be happy to assist you.
Unfortunately, we do not have a button type but we consider the shut-off valve to be a switch type where you can install it between your shower hose and handheld or between your shower arm and holder.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi! We accidentally left the shower head valve shut off for 24 hours. It seemed like it still held up but now I'm nervous about the water bill. Does the shower head actually stop the water from coming through? The valve for the main tub part was left on but the shower head button was turned off. Wondering what that's done to our pipes!
The shut off valves only pauses or reduce your water flow out of the part that it is connected to. Unfortunately, if your main line is still on, you will still have water running through.
@@theshowerheadstore so the water bill still goes up? that’s why i got the thing so i would save water to reduce the bill but then the bill will still be the same when u shower and click it off?
@@justmiritingz2327 Maybe its not working for you in terms of the water bill. However, what's great is that you can shut off the water to your shower head without shutting of the water to your valve, saving you precious time in the shower. Can l use this to stop my shower head from dripping , l am worried in case the water backing up when the valve is closed will damage the shower .
Many thanks
Hi Bob! Thanks for reaching out. If there is a little bit of water in the showerhead after use, it can drip slightly, but should not be dripping indefinitely. If dripping indefinitely is the case, then you may need to change your shower valve.
@@soothingstyles8749 Unfortunately l have to lay the shower head on the floor so can't hear the drips . I think your saying it would be inadvisable to use the shut off valve as a fix ?
Thanks for your advice much appreciated.
Bob
@@bobatwell7505 That is correct, as the issue may extend farther than the shut-off valve can fix. As a precautionary measure, I would recommend consulting a plumber first.
Is this good for a shower head with a leak
For any leaking issue, I would recommend replacing or repairing before upgrading. This shut-off Valves is capable of shutting off your water to the showerhead completely.
Great idea, my kids waste so much water always.
Thank you, Kel!
