That end with the Anjanath wasn't bugged btw. His nest is up in a vine-y area where he will lose his footing and fall into the vines if you stagger him while he's on them. When he went through the floor, it's because he can dig through to go to a lower level or climb up to a higher one at anytime.

Yeah world does have a bit of an information and tutorial issue. Rise and wilds do take bigger steps in fixing this problem, but it does still rely on the player reading and doing a menu dive.
A lot of this game informational is proped up by veterans as then share their game knowledge like folklore. This compliments the cooperative experience of this game a great deal, but I do agree that the game could do much more with an improved onboarding system and ui.

@@AngryPlayerGaming The point is when the average person plays a game, when you are provided a tutorial, no matter how simple it is, you should not feel the need to look for more tutorials or guides.
Why would the game hide large portions of its tutorial away in menus? It doesn't make sense. If the game bothers to shows you a guide, then thats all you should need to know.
The 3 combos in the training room? If thats all they show you then thats all you would know, simple as that.
Not everyone sits in a lecture hall, listen to what the professor teaches about history, and then thinks to themselves to do a deeper dive into said history. What the professor teaches is what SHOULD appear in the tests.

This is great, always love seeing new players pick up the game! I would like to offer some pointers here that really helped me out.
All movesets for each weapon can be found in the hunter notes. It’s a good idea to spend a bit of time in the training room with each weapon to see which one feels best to you. Video tutorials are really helpful too, but they aren’t necessary at the start.
Even though it’s an action combat game, a common mistake new players make is treating it like a hack n’ slash. What helps is to instead think of the fights as if they are turn based. You attack when there is an opening, and react when the monster makes its move. This will get easier when you become more comfortable with your weapon of choice. Learning your weapon well gives your mind more space to pay attention to the monster and its actions. The magic of monster hunters combat will really start to show when you get to this point.
That’s all for now. Super excited for MHWilds, and I’m looking forward to playing with you all! Happy Hunting!

The challenge for me with learning weapons in MH is that to some degree the game tells you what you can do, but it doesn't help you understand why you'd do any particular thing. Often all it takes is watching a few minutes of gameplay with that weapon to see how the kit comes together, but if you're not doing that then the more complicated weapons are going to be frustrating to try and work out through trial-and-error. It's a like a fighting game where you've got a move list with all the special moves but nothing about how juggles work for that characters.
Once you get it, it clicks and is a hell of a lot of fun. I prefer games with this degree of complexity because it's even more satisfying when you figure it all out, but Mike's frustrations as a brand new player are valid and relatable.

    • @RiskOfBaer
      @RiskOfBaer 12 дней назад

Yep, it's pretty much like a fighting game in that regard. The game will tell you the controls, show how to do the moves, maybe even propose a few basic combos, but it's up to YOU to take all those pieces and put them together in a way that works. Could the game tell you EVERYTHING there is to know about the weapon and how to play it exactly? Does it need to? Absolutely not.

on the whole "it doesnt tell you that" thing. I will say there is a thing above your onjective/quest that shows you every combo button input and the attack relating to it. It shows that pressing RT starts it with a sword attack. While the game doesnt hold your hand on mastering a weapon i would say it gives you all the upfront info combo wise and you then just feel the flow of the weapon. THats my personal opinion on it anyway. But once that combat does click man its so fun just bullying monsters once you just "get it" as some would say.

Something that I will say is that is always fascinating watching players do this game blind and hearing their thoughts about it. Even if I don't get the chance to watch live and I just get these sort of 'story time' snippets its always fun to see. The assumptions you are going to make about things and the unique way everyone problems solves is something that you only really get to experience once. If you are enjoying the game then I highly recommend doing your best to stay blind for as long as possible because it will only further enhance the game for you. That said I understand that you are doing this as a streamer and at *some* point you do sort of have to actually interact with your stream...

@6:50 the lack of explanation I have come around to believing is by design for the weapons. the pro's already know, so they don't need an explanation, but for new players I actually think it's a better on boarding experience to be given little information up front. for your first bunch of monsters your really don't need to know more than your basic swings and learning the weapon is a HUGE part of monster hunter. I've brought several new players into the game before and it always goes better when i "teach" them the weapon by basically just going over a few things (like the basic swings), waiting three or four monsters, then introducing them to a new attack or the first mechanic of their weapon etc, rinse and repeat.

Defender gear has been a thing in a lot of the games now and they've mishandled it every time. Capcom doesn't care about the experience of new players. They just want people playing whatever is currently relevant or the newest game.
Realistically. You should just have a toggle in settings or something to turn that feature of the game on or off. Since Defender Gear effectively skips all early game progression.
It's been a huge argument in the community since they first made the decision to add it into the games. With a very prevalent talking point in the community being "why does it matter". For the most part I think the community finally landed on just vehemently warning against new players using it (due to nightmare experiences of seeing people in icebourne content having literally no idea how to use their own weapon and basically hitting a roadblock. can very quickly ruin their experience) and if you've played any previous game. It doesn't matter cause it just skips you to the content you actually care about. Most veterans will say the game effectively doesn't even start till HR and the experience pre HR is pretty much the exact same in every MH game. However, it can become an issue due to each game having their own nuances in combat and mechanics.
Which this becomes a problem again cause they've started adding multiple layers of this progression skipping. They'll have one set that skips you to high rank and one set that skips you to the start of master rank. Which this just caused even more arguments about people being "allowed to play their own way" due to the fact Capcom has actively damaged their own games progression and opened a huge can of worms. So you effectively just have to self impose restrictions to actually experience most modern Monster Hunter games has intended. Which the community really needs to understand when these tools are presented to you. It becomes hard not to use them and you kind of lose incentive to earn them yourself. This is like a foreign concept to most and you very commonly see people mocked for suggesting it. World is pretty bad but Rise is 10x worse. That game hardcore dumps resources, gear, and other things on you right when you start the game. You lose incentive to progress or farm anything and just skip to late late game.

Switch Axe has been my favorite weapon since my first game in the series, Monster Hunter Tri. That game has far less explanations about things than World, but it felt incredible rewarding to me to find out mechanics through experimentation. I think that's why many Japanese games hide information. They want you to experiment instead of theorize, at least when you start playing.
This is just a guess, but I think it may stem from how RPGs came to Japan. They were English only at first, and many players could barely understand anything in them. Because of that, experimenting with what does what became an integral part of the gameplay experience. Many Japanese developers have dear memories of that phase of RPGs, and it may be one of the motivations to obfuscate information in their games.

I started with Hammer, but I've learned about half the weapons by now. The weapon choice is by far the biggest choice to make in the game and will determine if a new player likes the game or not.
I get what preach is saying about more tutorials belonging in the game, but I just don't care when it comes to this game. In Monster Hunter, it's worth looking up a tutorial and might be the difference between you enjoying the game or not.

Mike this ain't the game to ask for exact numbers (without going through the community of course, they documment stuff) because this was the game in the series where they introduced simple damage numbers, just knowing how much damage you are doing to the monster. And a bunch of the community FREAKED OUT.
The layer of obfuscation in the middle is kinda part of the fun for many (a health bar in the monster is boring, played out, seeing it limp after fighting it for many minutes however? Great, keeps the tension). That said modern design seems to be slowly moving away from that obfuscation, Wilds has now timers for buffs and debuffs for example. But a lot of people hate it.

I 100% agree about the critique where the game should teach you its systems. I love monster hunter but ill be honest i dropped MH World the first time i played it and i didn't pick it back up until a friend wanted me to play with him like a year later. Lucky for me he was very knowledgeable about the game and it's systems and taught them to me and after that is where i really started to get invested into the game to the point that i sunk like 1k hours into the game and beat every bit of content it had.
I always recommend MH to new players but with the caveat that you kind of need to consume third party content to learn the game or you are probably going to get real frustrated with the game real quick. This is 100% a failing quality on the design of otherwise an amazing game series.

The opening bit, with Preach talking about how unhelpful the UI can be with learning new weapons, is one of those things that keeps people from getting into Monster Hunter in general, IMO. The game throws a LOT at you from the outset, and if you don't know how to parse through it all or focus on what you DO get and put the rest aside, you're not going to see the potential everything can lead to. My first experience with the Switch Axe was basically the same as Preach's, for example, and while I did learn it eventually I passed on it for a good while for other weapons I could actually understand.

7:44 yeah but at this point the weapons have been figured out by the community. I get the sentiment, but there are so many extremely good and reliable sources for everything out of the game that the game only really has to give you a basic idea of what the weapon does

One thing that should be known is that stats were very much hidden I believe since the inception of monster hunter. I believe world is the first game to actually have damage numbers so the old philosophy of feeling something out vs how do I make damage number go up. This franchise is old.

I hope you learned about the capture mechanic eventually. Capturing is nearly always the better option as it ends the fight sooner and contrary to what you'd think actually nets you more rewards.

Ask someone who has tried the last 6 Monster Hunter titles, and bounced off of most of them, I agree with the sentiment that monster hunter games are like coconuts.
They are really difficult to crack, but once you do, you find a really refreshing experience inside.
I wanted to like Monster Hunter, but World is the first game in the series that got me to stick with it.

Whenever you're ready to take the blinders off, just go watch JoCat videos on weapons you use/want to use. Super short and as informative as it is funny. And its waaaay better than having 200 ppl try and shove all the information in your vast cranium all at once.
Also this series has many years of refinement they simply cannot shove in all the tutorials they already shove in your face at the start. World is the best newplayer friendly, but it is still far from friendly lol

This is how OG Hunter actually is. They don't tell you; you have to figure it out yourself or play in a group. Sure, you will get carried a lot, but there are some very ultra-experienced hunters actually holding back by purposely gearing down or matching their gear so the new player can experience the hunting.

The game does a pretty poor job of explaining weapon mechanics, that is true. The "intended way" is for you to just... try it and find out on your own.
As for stats and such, however, I absolutely agree - it would be much better if they were more specific in regards to what stats do and mean, and the exact values. A critical strike in Monster Hunter does 1.25x damage by default, but that number can be increased with the Critical Boost skill. They get a LITTLE bit better at explaining and specifying stats in MH Rise, but not much.
Affinity is basically your crit chance; by my guess, the reason why they call it "affinity" rather than "crit chance" is the fact that there's a specific mechanic for "anti crits", when you have a negative affinity; giving the entire mechanic a different name is a way to differentiate it from the very strongly established critical hit from many other games.
Best of luck with this fantastic game!

It sucks because the new generation of gamers are being trained like Mike wants them to, by essentially having an essay trickled into some kind of tutorial that literally says to try every single thing you can do right at the start, killing any chance of natural discoverability, and tightening the scale for personal improvement. I wish modern (and boomer) gamers had the guts to just just try things anymore. A journal with a combo list is more than enough. Games don't need a section going: Try Combo 1 -> press press press -> Great!
