LIVING IN A SHIPPING CONTAINER IN HAWAII ∙ Off-Grid Tiny Home & Permaculture Forest

  • My friends in Hawaii are living off-grid in a converted tiny house shipping container. They're creating a permaculture forest by planting fruit trees on their land on the Big Island. They're also using a compost toilet, solar panel, and rain water catchments.

      awesome set-up guys. super practical, almost no moving parts which can break. very close to how i will do it. i see so many tiny houses which are almost as energy intensive and maintenance requiring as a regular sized home, they give me anxiety lol. look forward to seeing your progress

      OffGridHawaii Wouldn't it be better if you guys would put that battery of your solar panel somewhere on the ground, so it cant't fall ??
      Other than that you guys are super lovely :) Wishing Everybody the Best for themselves and Infinite Love, Peace and Balance to Everybodyyy :)

      preyfan that was actually the first plan, but we decided against because because we wanted the bottom space for the dresser, also it was more wire to run, and we didn't want my nephews touching it. We plan on closing that top shelve off so it won't be a problem. Aloha!

    Can I suggest that you line the walls of your shipping container with Acoustic foam panels? They are nice insulation and they also absorb sound.

    That is so friggin awesome!!!!! Usually states have building codes, however, it doesn't look like Hawaii (or at least the big island) has any. I cannot believe more people are not living like that. The only thing I'd do differently is spend a few bucks on a toilet seat, put a few pieces of wood on the side and be able to sit down. I also did not see a window, maybe i missed that. Because wouldn't the misquotes come in when leaving the side doors open? Other than that, everything is bad ass!!!!!! They are livin the dream!

      RAW FOOD PHILOSOPHY I've researched & foumd out that its actually better for us to squat during elimination. Years ago thats how it was done, but things changed over time. And they were saying that their not finished with the container, its more of a temporary setup so, maybe windows will then, be added. 😊

    • @rawfoodphilosophy7061
      @rawfoodphilosophy7061 7 лет назад +1

      Ya, i've heard that too, about the squating. However, i've tried it when i go camping and it is uncomfortable for me. Yet, i do feel like the poop just slides outta me doing the squat......except for the one time where it got on my ankle

    I know of that area, too much rain (but I guess its better too much than not enough). .... I decided to move to Miloli'i, on the Kona side with my wife. I would recommend building a screened in enclosure on top of your shipping container using a minimal amount of wood and a large overhang of corrugated roofing (flat top or shed style, easy simple cheap).. oh and for curtains you can get any kind cloth at Walmart... You can always wall it in latter.... you got the right idea to add plants, it brings value to your land incase you want to sell it latter, which most people do as they get older there...

    Are you able to stay on your land as long as you want without permitting a build? What about the minimum 880 square foot required for any home must also have running shower and toilet? How are none of the rules apply to what you are livin in? Or can you do as you wish, just without power and water/sewage from county? Please let me know I am attempting this on my own. I have a lot in Nanawalle Estates. Thanks

    • @piolaappleseed6
      @piolaappleseed6 5 лет назад

      Do some research, there's different laws regarding permits depending on your subdivision and if it's ag land. Nanawale estates has tons of offgrid unpermitted places. Sometimes it really comes down to who your neighbors are what's gonna fly or not.

    Did you have to do much cleaning and prepping of your container before you moved stuff into it? I used to rent a container in Hilo, and it smelled a bit foul because it had wood siding or flooring in it, and the wet conditions of East Hawaii can really make a funky smell inside those things.

    • @piolaappleseed6
      @piolaappleseed6 5 лет назад

      Ours was pretty clean. It smells if we keep it locked up too long. Takes constant airing out and cleaning to control the smell and mold

    I have researched this and read to live in a shipping container your land must be a minimum of 3 acres and zoned as agriculture, any info about this?

    • @RyanRyan
      @RyanRyan 4 года назад

      @@KathleenHawk I was referring specifically to Hawaii County, I know some communities have CCR rules that are separate from Hawaii county zoning. I also read that accessory houses don't need a permit but the main house must be permitted. I'm getting all my information from John b rogers on YT and the affordable portable housing website. He seems pretty knowledgeable. I am interested and always wanted to build a container place but due to certain code laws its looking less attractive. Alaska for example has no code laws or permits needed for container homes but in Hawaii theres lots of limitation not only on building but size minimums. Which is ironic when you think about what a shipping container is originally designed for, being able to be stacked 7 high, on a swaying ship, with excess of 50 tons of force on it, i'm pretty sure its structurally safe to be inside one. Build as you go is a cool idea, starting with one and getting to 3 floors but you can't start with one if there square foot minimums involved. This law is in place to keep out low income people I believe.

    • @kd5txo
      @kd5txo 4 года назад

      If they did dig a hole they wouldn't get more than 5 inches before they hit solid lava rock. Then they would have to crack out a jackhammer or rock drill to get any deeper. I helped a construction guy who would install cesspools using a rock drill and dynamite ....

      Yes, shipping containers get really hot in the sun. There are several things you can do to keep em cool such as insulate, paint the roof white, have plenty of ventilation and breeze... We've made some videos about it on OffGridHawaii channel if you want to check those out.

  • @Zone10Permaculture
    @Zone10Permaculture 7 лет назад

    They should really look into bucket compoosting. Smaller more accessible trash bins with holes drilled into the bottom to let urine and other liquids out. Cover with saw dust or wood shavings after use and then change out the bins every time they are almost full. Then put the covered buckets some place where they can sit for about a year and then you have well rotted compoost! Great for giving plants a real nice feed. It's true not to put around vegetable plants for about 2 years.,until it has really had time to break everything down that may be harmful. Great idea for permaculture. Anyone interested in permaculture should check out the youtube channel Bealtaine Cottage. Goddess inspired permaculture in Ballyfarnon, Leitrim West Ireland

    • @piolaappleseed6

      That's a great question. There are many invasive species already on the island that are a threat to native O'hia forests. We are trying our best to preserve the O'hias that are on our land by planting around them instead of cutting them down as much as possible. And we are planting as many of the edible plants that are well established that were brought to the island by the polynesians and other well adapted tropicals.

    Put more info on how to get a container delivered to your property.

      Nikola Tesla knows what's up. But typically just get in contact with your local shipping container seller and they will have the proper trucks to deliver them.

    Very nice set-up. You guys have obviously put a lot of work into your piece of Paradise. Are you bothered much by the noisy frogs, volcanic vog, or the glass particulate that enters the air when the lava flow hits the water? Did you guys do the leveling of your container by yourselves? Or did you hire someone to grade or scrape the site? Are you concerned about the rat/slug sickness? I know some people are putting two containers side x side with a 10ft. breezeway in between and a simple roof over the top of the two. Have you seen anyone do that? I wish you two the best. I used to live in Hilo and owned some lots in Puna.

      We're not bothered by the frogs nor the vog nor the laze. Levelling was very simple. Driveway was screpee out by a guy. People do that with their containers, it's net if you really like containers

    I hope their property was not in Leilani Estates in Puna. Pele is making her way to ocean and changing the landscape and adding to the island.

    no windows. no ventilation. this is why people get a bad first impression of the tiny home movement, and fight it.

    Are there any poisonous animals reptiles or insects down in Hawaii?

    • @piolaappleseed6
      @piolaappleseed6 7 лет назад

      There are pretty much no harmful animals in Hawaii. However, there are centipedes that can bite and hurt really bad and pesky fire ants that bite. The most serious thing is there are rats and slugs/snails that carry a parasite that can give you meningitis (ratlung worm disease). Other than that there are wild pigs that will completely destroy your garden if you don't take preventative measures.
