I've never been particularly interested in john green's works, but the fact that he encourages readers instead of just seeing them as beneath him says a lot about his character and his connection with his audience.
My literature teacher told us to come here. I now understand why and that literature goes beyond being entertained by a book or for the sake of pleasure. I now see reading is a 'tool' that will help us in our lives, experiences, feelings (good or bad ones but still feelings) and so much more but it would be a very long list. Greetings from Argentina.
Dear everyone at crash course, english specifically, I would just like you to know how much I appreciate what you do. I was never someone who especially loved reading, but now, I well, do. It seems odd even to me that the few videos made on this channel have changed my opinion in such a big way, and yet I swear it's true. I would love to see more of these if it is at all possible, I know I am just one and have no impact on what videos are made. Most of all, I just wanted to say that these videos mean a lot to me, thank you.
I know you guys are doing more CC Lit, but this is my favorite CC series, and I have read entire novels for the sole purpose of watching two 10-minute videos on them. So it would be so amazing if you made this a more regular series, because this series is what really broke the ice for me learning how to analyze books. Seriously, CC Lit has changed my life.
THANK YOU my english teacher once told my class, "take this Edgar Allen Poe story and find 10 symbols". If we didn't have 10 we were failed and the most anyone had was 7. They then told us about the "symbols" we missed and none of them made any sense! One was that cat represents the devil because the cat died.
This is bs there are so many other way to connect cats to the devil. They’re stealthy and they’re witches assistants. Some people believe magic comes from the devil. The cat helps the witch and so does the devil
Typical high school student: The curtains were blue. Typical high school symbolic teacher: The blue curtains represent the characters sorrow and depression. Typical college symbolic teacher: What do you think the curtains mean?
*When you mentioned Hyperbole, for the first time I felt like I can learn this without feeling bored, you guys should do a series on literal devices and hard grammar stuff*
You.can rid of this comment if there is any public access to this comment. I have been an avid view to your channel, truthfully in grade school and just recently revived the interest. I noticed you Mr. Green speak form a place of sincerity and respect when the subject at hand is history or literature; And also from a place of humor most highschool history teachers find witty, who may or may not learn something they carry with them in mind. Something you don't already know.. I wanted to thank you for your reverence for the history of where we came from.. as an avid reader myself, I make reverence my ultimate attention and look past the ink, even when the author is very very dead, and attempt to equip myself with the lessons and quotations of those dead or alive. And I thank you again Mr. Green and the crash course team, for your continual release of an available port of history, literature, sciences, and all the more! Best wishes
Showed this clip to a reading class I'm teaching here in the SF Bay Area-9th graders. And one of the ideas that came out of the class is that imagination and empathy-two of the main skills strengthened by reading-can be antidotes to cynicism and indifference, two of the really toxic aspects of the culture young people have to deal with.
That's not always true. Some people are extremely well read and yet still associate with nihilistic philosophys. For example a RUclipsr by the name of Ben Yatzee (pretty sure that's how it's spelled) creates his entertainment purely off cynicism and indifference. You should check out his show, "Zero Punctuation", and see what I'm talking about.
+Adam Donovan I shared the video this morning with my English 20 (Grade 11) class here in Alberta, Canada, and we especially noted these two insights: "Reading is an act of empathy." (To readers:) "Go out and build a world!" We also had a valuable discussion on authorial intent. As a teacher, writer and avid student of language, I especially resonated with the idea that books are published for the readers...as opposed to being published for the authors (well, the writing fulfills various needs, therapy and eating included) or the English teachers. John reminded me that I am sharing literature with my students to promote appreciation, understanding and growing ability to contribute and not, first and foremost, to further lesser causes like curricular requirement or initiation into the occasionally hoity-toity halls of English scholarship. (Heresy? Perhaps.) There is room for many and varied lenses on what we read, including our students' own "naked eyes." We also appreciated John's very likable, relatable examples. (My students, however, asked if he was ADD. :) I had the advantage of watching the video several times to evaluate it, once prior in a Grade 10 class, and then with my students. Stopping it several times to check a pulse on things like "pedantic" and "Galifreyan," the video might take a couple views -- and some life experience -- to capture all the witticisms and wisdom. The Faulknerian allusion was skippable, IMO.) All in all, loved it enough to share it with some of my favourite people.
I just found out hat this john green is THE John Green that wrote the fault in our stars and Paper Towns and many other books *Jesus I live under a rock
"Read Romeo and Juliet! It's a very good play, although at times derivative of West Side Story." And there you have the moment that I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. Well played John Green. Well played.
hello John, i'd like to let you know that you've inspired me through your books to write my own, I've read "looking for Alaska" (my personal favorite), "the fault in our stars", and "paper towns" and I've loved each book, im 16 and I'm planning on starting my book this winter
A quote from a character in one of favorite books. “The point of storytellers is not to tell us what to think, but to give us things to think on.” So yeah, the author of that book would agree with you about authorial intent
I just love crash course because almost everybody is excited in one way or another to learn things but usually they don't know how or where to learn these things and then CRASH COURSE PRESENTS IT IN A WAY THAT"S FUN AND INTERESTING and most of all, informative. Every time I'm in science or English or history and a crash course video comes most of the class is excited and I look around and can tell that at least half of them have looked up these in their spare time and there's always at least one kid who doesn't know what it is but everybody's always so eager to explain how great it is. I guess this is just a long way for me to say that I got so excited when I found out there was a literature crash course and I'm so happy to be so excited. THANK YOU JOHN AND HANK :)
(I'm not trying to beat a dead horse or anything; I realize this comment is 2 months old) He actually said it correctly. Translating the French into English (and adding the preceding English) would make it "If I speak in French…". "Parle en francais" is "speak in French", and the "If I" was already in English. If he said the entire thing in French, it would be "Si je parle en francais…" Though, I may still be mistaken, as I've only taken French for a few years and am not anything nearly resembling fluent in the language.
+kiki Henrie Hello :) Could someone give me their honest opinion or thoughts on my youtube channel? It about facts, misconceptions and lists about books, fictional characters, authors, etc. :D
Kat Wolf Egad, I cannot express enough how deeply I DESPISED that book. But I did get to make a paper mache model of the island, which was pretty wicked.
sean flaherty It is a terribly depressing book about the truth of humanity. And it also details the gruesome death of 2 of the boys. So yes, i think it is a fairly good read.
I want to Thank Mr. John Green for his focus on making education videos and his dedication to make it stay and always free for us to learn his insight through youtube, i really appreciate and love all of your work on youtube, Semoga Allah membalas kebaikan anda pak!

John Greene I would be so impressed with you if you could do a series on why mathematics is important in life, whether in a historical or just using real life examples. Please DO this, you can change lives by teaching people why they should learn math. PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE THIS!
John Green, I was really mesmerized by your crash course page, but now that I knew that your wrote The Fault in our Stars I know for sure that you're that one of the greatest person that had ever lived and I'm not exaggerating period.
+David Narter It was the wrong usage. Nothing was really spelled wrong. He just used the wrong word. It could've been a typo. E and A aren't exactly far away on the keyboard.
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I am homeschooling my son and in my search for curriculum I came across our videos. I agree with 189pac that John is one of the greatest teachers in existence. I was watching one of your videos to see if I could use it for teaching my son. He happened to walk into my room and saw the video. The expression on his face was comical. He asked me how I knew about the Vlogbrothers. So now I know that i can use your videos and he'll actually pay attention. So many of the videos out there are very dry. You are among a rare few who are able to teach and still make it fun.
Dear John I was wondering if you would ever do any H.P. Lovecraft , Robert E. Howard, or Philip K. Dick. All of whom I enjoy deeply, especially Lovecraft and I think it would be cool to do segments on authors over their works because it drives me Insane when works are recognized over their creators I.E. Conan, Cthulhu.
You know, this really interested me in literature. The main reason being is, I thought that people who read 24 hours a day (hyperbole) are crazy, which I do find Ironic, because I read a lot of physics books (mainly because I studied theoretical physics), but this video made me that much more interested in literature, so sincerely thank you. p.s. I thought people who read a lot of fantasy are crazy (again hyperbole, not saying those people actually have mental disorders), and now I am glad I can consider myself one of those people who read 24 hours a day (yet again...you know).
Hahaha Nerds Unite!!! Anyways, can you guys do some of the lesser known Shakespeare plays like A Midsummer Night's Dream and maybe even popular fiction like the Hunger Games?
Dear, Crash Course I had to watch this video about three or four times because in matter of fact this is the fastest crash course I've seen yet to fully understand the concept this video portrayed. Teachers when you show this video to your students please make sure to stop every once and awhile to talk about what just happened because its a lot of information for our tiny minds to comprehend not to call students stupid but still. best wishes, A student from JMMA
Really enjoyed this video, thank you. The sort of things I'm often spouting as an English teacher, but good to have someone else doing it for me with graphics and whatnot ... "Only connect!" Is my teaching mantra!
Your literature videos are so helpful for my exams! I'm in the UK doing English literature A level, and I wish that you did the texts that I study like Macbeth or the Bloody Chamber or McEwan novels? It would help me and many of my classmates it you did! Thank you :)
So I'm in middle school and we're reading short stories and I think it is very difficult for my classmates to understand that no, the teachers aren't trying to torture you by not telling you the ending, Edgar Allen Poe wanted you to decide if Montressor was dying or stealing a body so that you might better understand yourself. I think I am in a class for people with learning disabilities, though, which sucks because while I do have ADHD, the main thing that puts me into hyper focus is literature and I'm 12 and reading Slaughterhouse Five and UGH WHY?
Okay the more I learn about the Green family, the more I am jelly and wish I could be a part of it. Successful historians, teachers, scientists, humorists, youtube partners AND authors?! Amazing!
This is basically what I have to teach my third graders on Monday. I am totally watering this down for wee brains so we can talk about reader responses and why they matter.
+Stove Serino Ha! Teachers. Hey - at least yours uses RUclips for educational purposes. Our channel definitely fits with that, see if Mrs Stacey likes it!
***** oh my god I never knew that ahhh what a coincidence I love scishow and don't kill me but I haven't read john green yet but I need to read all of them (my reading list is long) when I started this video I was like "he sounds exactly hank"
oh my god i just found out that ur the john green that wrote fault in our stars it is an honor to watch your show sir fault in our stars is my favourite movie and book i don't really learn literature in school but i watch your channel anyway, it's amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just found out that THIS John Green is actually THAT John Green!!
it took me a long time

We all had that moment sometime or another 😂

I like the fact that you put Circular Gallifreyan on the blackboard.
I was wondering if I was the only one who knew what that was. I don’t read Gallifreyan though, so I wonder what it says.
Ugh I love crash course so much! Not only because it is educational and interesting but also because it inspires me to want to learn more :)
Nice Gallifreyan on the blackboard, John. I'm on to you, and so is the Doctor.

Actually, I think at (around) 1:40 it would be "Je parle francais"
Forgive the lack of accents/letter decorations - I'm on an American keyboard.

Translating the French into English (and adding the preceding English) would make it "If I speak in French…". "Parle en francais" is "speak in French", and the "If I" was already in English.

Fair enough. I've taken a year of high school French and naught else, so I'm gonna defer to you on this.
I started to study literature with this videos, it is my first time to study English literature. Thanks for making this videos.

Within the first 2 seconds of the video, I saw the drawing on the chalkboard and was like GALLIFRIAN IT'S GALLIFRIAN
I'm 4 seconds into the video now.
I don't know what he said, all I saw the entire video was galifreyain. and the camera zooming in on it.

And NOT because it happens to be in some of our AP lit classes *whistles* #justsaying
Kat Wolf Egad, I cannot express enough how deeply I DESPISED that book. But I did get to make a paper mache model of the island, which was pretty wicked.
wow *****
I'm tempted to read the book.. Is it worth it?

That Gallifreyan, though...it's actually pretty perfect.
Same
I know how did he do it so damn well??!?
I think this is the best literature course because what can be better than a bestseller author teaching you a literature course
I want to Thank Mr. John Green for his focus on making education videos and his dedication to make it stay and always free for us to learn his insight through youtube, i really appreciate and love all of your work on youtube, Semoga Allah membalas kebaikan anda pak!
Crash course: in which John Green STILL never blinks.
Also, is that Gallifreyan written on the chalkboard?
yes, "romeo and juliet", i'm not sure if the "and" is written.
here is a guide toreading Gallifreyan if you are interested.
Gatlyn Anderson He does blink. He just never does it on camera because he is concentrating very hard. This was said by John Green himself.
FROP DESAI
Yes I know. I know he purposefully doesn't blink in his videos. I just didn't know it extended past vlogbrothers.
Gatlyn Anderson
Yes it does. Glad I could help. :)

Dear, Crash Course
I had to watch this video about three or four times because in matter of fact this is the fastest crash course I've seen yet to fully understand the concept this video portrayed. Teachers when you show this video to your students please make sure to stop every once and awhile to talk about what just happened because its a lot of information for our tiny minds to comprehend not to call students stupid but still.
best wishes, A student from JMMA
It's "You and I"
Adriel Diaz ***** you two will love this guy. :)
Adriel Diaz You're welcome mayne. Enjoy. I've just subscribed to him, he's great!

What does the Gallifreyan say?
Really enjoyed this video, thank you. The sort of things I'm often spouting as an English teacher, but good to have someone else doing it for me with graphics and whatnot ... "Only connect!" Is my teaching mantra!
Your literature videos are so helpful for my exams! I'm in the UK doing English literature A level, and I wish that you did the texts that I study like Macbeth or the Bloody Chamber or McEwan novels? It would help me and many of my classmates it you did! Thank you :)
George orwells 1984
make it happen john green!
Best wshes, tommy
So I'm in middle school and we're reading short stories and I think it is very difficult for my classmates to understand that no, the teachers aren't trying to torture you by not telling you the ending, Edgar Allen Poe wanted you to decide if Montressor was dying or stealing a body so that you might better understand yourself. I think I am in a class for people with learning disabilities, though, which sucks because while I do have ADHD, the main thing that puts me into hyper focus is literature and I'm 12 and reading Slaughterhouse Five and UGH WHY?
becca moses 17 now how’s it going
Easy John! Take a deep breath every once in a while. Loved the video by the way.
PLEASE do "The Picture of Dorian Gray" i would love to see an analysis of it!
Yes I agree with that request. I read it a few years ago and loved it. I'd be really fascinated to see an analysis of it.
And when I thought I couldn't love this man more... "or even bad vampire fiction"
OMG you're John Green? so you wrote 'the false in our stars' ?? right???
+Little Ares Fault*
yep :3
+Little Ares Yes he is.
+Little Ares your stars are false
+Little Ares
how long did it take you to figure that one out?
Okay the more I learn about the Green family, the more I am jelly and wish I could be a part of it. Successful historians, teachers, scientists, humorists, youtube partners AND authors?! Amazing!
*How to Read a Book* by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren is a _very good_ book for people who want to enhance their reading experience.
Faulkner beneath the stars 😂
The Faulkner in our stars
Faulkner, I barely Geneau her!
I'm honestly only here because the AP Lit exam is tomorrow morning. Truly crash coursing right now
This is basically what I have to teach my third graders on Monday. I am totally watering this down for wee brains so we can talk about reader responses and why they matter.
Thats Gallifreyan writing on the chalkboard!!! :D
Would anyone care to translate the Gallifreyan writing on the board?
It reads, "Romeo and Juliet" :P
I don't understand what Gallifreyan means. Can somebody explain the joke ?
coffeeandcakes1 It isn't a joke. It's an invented language for the BBC show "Doctor Who".
my teacher put this video up on her website for us to watch. Jokes on her I've seen this one already Mrs. Stacey
+Stove Serino Ha! Teachers. Hey - at least yours uses RUclips for educational purposes. Our channel definitely fits with that, see if Mrs Stacey likes it!
