That ending was so satisfying. I love how you played into the standard Reddit Expert tropes, and then knocked it all down with the extra context and utility considerations. Also, “NASA worm meets Wipeout 2097” gave me a good chuckle.
I’m hoping that more will follow, because it has put me off from watching so called “informative” videos, for so many years now. I’m glad logical thinking is starting to be trendy again.
one of my favorite things about your videos is how humble you are about your observations. dozens upon dozens of other art-centric channels out there would've unabashedly claimed "I FIXED Sandisk's TERRIBLE New Logo!!!" and spent 30 minutes touting how much better they can do it themselves. while i do prefer your version of the logo, it's great that you acknowledge it isn't technically an _objective_ improvement, since, at the end of the day, personal preference plays a part in graphic design just like any other artform.
I guess, it is like dunning kruger for designers - to acknowledge that there is more than one might be aware of needs a higher qualification than confidence alone. I enjoyed this so much.
As a graphic designer myself, I physically reared my head back when I saw this new logo, but after looking at it for a little while, I actually kind of like it. And appreciate they didn't go for yet another san serif stock font that all other companies are moving to lately.
I’m not a graphic designer but I also hated it at first but now I kinda like it What still bugs me about the new logo is it looking like it’s been cropped at the bottom. And now the N being too narrow lol
Wait, he just started talking about the thing, talked about the thing and then it was over? I don't have to like and subscribe? Are you sure this video isn't sponsored by Squarespace? How will I watch movies without a VPN in foreign countries!? I dunno if I can handle all this old school retro video action.
Wow, love the short and straight to the point format. THANK YOU for not making this into a 10 minutes video. I was gonna subscribe only to find out I was already subscribed. Please keep the compact style!
What an absolutely marvelous explainer video, filled not just with useful tips and guidance but also offering understanding and kindness in which to situate these critiques within the broader context. 💚
I'm so happy you mentioned Wipeout! That was the first thing that came to mind when I saw Sandisk's new logo. I also love the design aesthetics of the Wipeout games
It kind of bugs me when companies won't go the extra 5% and build a custom logo for digital placements that are sub 100px or some arbitrary value. The same way that product graphics teams will secretly have their own version of the logo for when it gets embroidered on product or woven into tage. Nobody else even needs to know about it other than the UX/UI designers and the web devs. The other designers can happily enjoy the beautiful optical alignments when the blow the logo up huge on the side of a building without destroying the clarity of the logo for the majority of viewers who only see it on their phone.
Those alternate versions are good in theory, but when a logo will be used over years or decades and by dozens of different teams, making your branding style guide as simple as possible goes a long way to ensuring your logo isn't misused. When I was in college, one of my professors dinged me points on a design project for this reason (I had different logos for b&w and colour, as well as different scales). At the time I was annoyed because I put a lot of work into optimising my design for different applications, but looking back he was correct.
@@cmmartti Eh somewhat disagree with your professors there. Sure, while not every logo needs a b&w and/or format specific versions, if it is colourful and/or complex visually, then those versions should be there. That was and still is the bare minimum imo. Also, if we're talking about years and decades of usage, optimizing for aliasing on low res screens is a one really weird decision in this day and age.
The issue is trying to enforce that in the press kit or people just grabbing the first logo they see on google images It’s much better to keep it simple for everyone
@@FruityKoala I do not subscribe to that kind of thinking. People who do not care will find novel ways to fuck it up no matter what you do or how simple it is, so I prefer to go the extra mile for those who do care and have something they can work with.
@@Balsalmo That might be true for icons in some cases (and some raster file formats support this, like .ico). But it's far better to just design a logo that doesn't need any of those variations and that will work at different scales and in b&w as is.
“Esoteric design trivia-and isn’t that the best gift of all these holidays?” Well, maybe not the design trivia _per se_ but a new Linus Boman video is the best gift any time of the year. (Well, it beats most gifts I would get, probably, anyway.)
I was gonna rant for a sec there when the title said “fix” like other logo RUclipsrs but you actually made sense and actually explained, proper to you man!!
Love the bait and switch of this video. Honestly though, it was expected of you. I'd never expect Linus of all people to go [everyones an expert] over a new logo.
Videos like these the reason why I subscribed to you; there is a very refreshing lack of designer-snobbery and while you aren't lacking opinion, you clearly are more concerned with utility than simply adhering to rules for the sake of it.
You sir are the ideal example of how design is a science, and if you are all about ego and the "I", then you should do art/s instead. One of the best and very few design RUclipsrs - Thank you

I was ready to complain about another video on "fixing" other people's work, but this is one of the best takes on any design I've seen and I might just share it whenever someone goes on about "fixing" things they don't fully understand.
I'm so glad you mentioned Wipeout. I was literally saying to a friend "these are the futuristic Designers Republic logos we deserve" when I first saw it.
I feel some parts like overshoot and spacing being "technically correct" instead of just by feel fit great to a digital storage company. The whole purpose of them is to keep every bit and byte exactly as it is and be reliable.
I have to say, this logo is pretty great (and your alterations add to it), but I think there's something slightly off-putting about a company which makes memory products having a logo designed around gaps and incomplete, cut-off letters. It's a very well-designed logo, but it just makes me think of data loss...
thank you for making me step back and understand the tradeoffs with your 'corrected' logo and the real one. I was nodding with you all the way with the 'mistakes' as that's what hit my eyes as well... but you explained why they probably did what they did and made me think.
I don't know if its me, or if this is the dig at the other guy who "fixes" logos, but i really appreciate the analysis on this. The fixes you made initially are technically correct. But at the same time, you made great points as to why its possibly intentional.
I don’t know how often I’ve had to explain optical alignment to clients that somehow have precise pixel perception. No that’s not lined up because if I do line it up it’ll look weird. So I have to do it because they’re the client and they request it and then they wonder why it doesn’t look right- clearly I’m still not lying it correctly. 😑
The one issue I have with this logo is that when looking at it from afar, or having bad eyesight like me the S can appear like an R and then the logo says RANDIRK.
I can't say the same. The "S" in the logo has the curved top on the left and a corner on the right, where if it was an "R" those features would be flipped. I'd say people would more likely have seen that as a weird "C" more than an "R".
Thank you, Linus, personally don't have a strong opinion on the new logo but always appreciate your insight on the nuance and design considerations that a layman like me would've missed.
0:19 The text in the W3C official SVG logo is also not optically aligned. This has bothered me a little too often since I discovered it 10 years ago. Thankfully the logo is not very used and it also took me 5 years to discover that the logo itself even existed.
The biggest issue with the logo that I have is that the missing bits suggest to me "Data loss", which is not something I would want to have in a logo for a flash memory manufacturer.
I think the N in the “fixed” logo looks too big / wide and pulls demands too much attention because of it. I think we have to accept the visual things he pointed out, as a trade off of not getting a boring AF logo just to make multiple use cases easier. I’m sure he’s right that that’s why they made the N and other things like they did, it’s gonna be used in all sorts of situations.
I love this video and I agree with everything in it. Thank you for acknowledging personal preference vs design goals. So many people forget to factor in the latter.
The first thing that struck about the new logo is how it echoes the spontaneous data loss on their SSD drives. IMO the better call would have been for a logo that communicates and signifies a sense of security, reliability. To regain customer confidence as part of a wider company wide effort to prevent issues like that from occurring again. Then perhaps have a diffusion line with this stylised logo of products that are more “edgy”
I think there is another 'flaw'.. having letters that seem incomplete, like the S'.. only tells me that their products may also result in missing data after use!
Phew! Here I was thinking you might hate this one. It’s certainly not perfect, but I really quite like it. Have you ever shared your opinion on the new Nokia logo?
The "redesigned" N technically plays better with other letters, but it's obvious why it's a worse choice - it becomes unbalanced inside itself, and attracts much more attention on the first glance due to all this empty space above the diagonal stem. I like the original N much better
2:13 well no, mostly. Exporting corrected assets to custom sizes like 10px isn't a big job (and absolutely no impossibility), and a given at a project of this size. It's as simple as making an artboard 10px high and adjusting, cropping the overshoot. So you're both right and wrong on many things in this video :D your logo looks better tho.
I normally strongly dislike all these "modern" rebrands (I find the new CIBC branding a travesty), so I was surprised that I really like the new SanDisk logo!
I'm just happy they didn't go with the bland minimalism that most tech companies are doing right now. Just by looking at the new SanDisk logo, new consumers will know it's a tech company.
That ending was so satisfying.
I love how you played into the standard Reddit Expert tropes, and then knocked it all down with the extra context and utility considerations.
Also, “NASA worm meets Wipeout 2097” gave me a good chuckle.
so glad we're moving past the reblanding trend
I’m hoping that more will follow, because it has put me off from watching so called “informative” videos, for so many years now. I’m glad logical thinking is starting to be trendy again.
We're not.
Are we?...
Are we though? One good rebrand does not a movement make
Nope, the corporate world has only just gotten started my friend
Thank you for this video. I've seen too many people "fix" designs without considering the choices and trade-offs of the original.
It’s so refreshing honestly
one of my favorite things about your videos is how humble you are about your observations. dozens upon dozens of other art-centric channels out there would've unabashedly claimed "I FIXED Sandisk's TERRIBLE New Logo!!!" and spent 30 minutes touting how much better they can do it themselves. while i do prefer your version of the logo, it's great that you acknowledge it isn't technically an _objective_ improvement, since, at the end of the day, personal preference plays a part in graphic design just like any other artform.
this is the reason i watch this channel. humble youtubers are very rare.
I guess, it is like dunning kruger for designers - to acknowledge that there is more than one might be aware of needs a higher qualification than confidence alone. I enjoyed this so much.
When you started talking about size, I immediately thought about how they would ultimately look on a tiny micro SD card and it does make sense
As a graphic designer myself, I physically reared my head back when I saw this new logo, but after looking at it for a little while, I actually kind of like it. And appreciate they didn't go for yet another san serif stock font that all other companies are moving to lately.
I’m not a graphic designer but I also hated it at first but now I kinda like it
What still bugs me about the new logo is it looking like it’s been cropped at the bottom.
And now the N being too narrow lol
I guess I have to get used to it. I loved their old logo so much...
I love this logo. It's probably the first company logo in 2 decades I actually want on a shirt.
Wait, he just started talking about the thing, talked about the thing and then it was over? I don't have to like and subscribe? Are you sure this video isn't sponsored by Squarespace? The narrow 'N' doesn't bother me at all. Because "SAND" and "DISK" seem to be more symmetrical in width.
Wow,, seeing the sandisk logo arranged vertically makes it look like an alien language you'd see on set dressing in star wars. I dig it, very sci-fi.
"Also, no."
You can't give me this gift and try to take it back. That's rude. I already have plans to regift it to someone else later.

Well, I feel like I've been given a pretty good gift. Thanks for the design trivia and spending time with us!
The priority in making sure small version is well optimized really reflects company main products in optimizing data storage.
We must be all on The Nice List this Christmas. :)
Design trivia is a great gift. Thank you.

It's a very well-designed logo, but it just makes me think of data loss...
I actually wondered the same. Though, when I think of data in computing I imagine controlled but bold, identifiable segments, not cursive or serifs.
thank you for making me step back and understand the tradeoffs with your 'corrected' logo and the real one. I was nodding with you all the way with the 'mistakes' as that's what hit my eyes as well... but you explained why they probably did what they did and made me think.

👀 Hmm.

Thank you, Linus, personally don't have a strong opinion on the new logo but always appreciate your insight on the nuance and design considerations that a layman like me would've missed.
So is that broken “S” the elephant in the room that we aren’t even going to talk about? :)
0:19 The text in the W3C official SVG logo is also not optically aligned. This has bothered me a little too often since I discovered it 10 years ago. Thankfully the logo is not very used and it also took me 5 years to discover that the logo itself even existed.

Interesting insights and presented by a buttery smooth voice, I salute you!
My holiday would be happier with more esoteric deaign trivia. So thank you for this wonderful gift.
But the old logo has the iconic disks, you know, from SanDISK?
sans disk
I suspect that’s one of the reasons they chose to do it, because disks are a bit… quaint.
0:29 My brain instantly called this "tangent blindness"

I'm very happy that this video went exactly as I wanted it to
I like having a new logotype with an interesting look too it, your comparison of NASA work and Wipeout is a good one, I love The Designers Republic
YES! Finally some nuance, this is the graphic design content the world needs!
Thank you for this gift of esoteric design trivia 🙌🏾🙏🏾✨😁😂
Right… But it clearly says Candick
Awesome video, I learned a lot from it! Maybe not the best, but still a great Christmas gift. 😉 God jul, Linus! 🎅
I learned; I’m thankful for that, thank you.
Great insights! Would you by any change know any fonts that are similar tho this logo?
"esoteric design trivia" 🤣 personally i think that's great gift.
where is the pencil drop and peace sign at the end?
Show this video to r/LogoDesign, they’d have a heart attack from realising they’re not all expert design gurus about logos.
I'm totally here for the esoteric design trivia :)
Great video. That N is still a crime against my eyes though
phenomenal as always
Thank you Linus
Watching DankPods makes this new logo feel like the Craig logos brother.
And thus, you just earned a new sub

The narrow "N" looks a bit off, and the vertical stacked version looks dumb. I love the redesign. It's perfect. 👌
merry christmas Linus!
It reminds me of Arasaka typeface logo. So cool!
Imo, what makes a logo so great is how it reflects the brand’s value. In this case, I don’t see any. It looks ok though.
I dunno... Esoteric design trivia is a pretty great gift in my book.
and for the resolution probleme of the overshoot you can have two logo size
Hmm when I look at this logo from a fit with the business they are in: data storage, I see a lot of broken letters, i.e. lost data...
Sandisks new logo is weird, but it brings 2000 vibes for some reason. I like it tbh.
*"Or is it?"* _spit take_
Don't do that while I'm drinking... D:
...also no. 😂❤
wipeout 2097 mentioned ❤️
Please do your analysis of jaguar rebrand
CANDICK
Loved the ending
put it side by side with the arasaka logo from cyberpunk2077. like it was made by the same guy
i like it before and after, the concept is good! unlike the jaguar one
love ur vids man youre awesome
I think there is another 'flaw'.. having letters that seem incomplete, like the S'.. only tells me that their products may also result in missing data after use!
Merry Kerningmas, one and all.
I’ll wait with my final judgement until I see the logo printed on an microSD card ;)
did you also fix the 4:3 aspect ratio?
/s
I really like the logo!
i appericate the brevity of the video, but one final side by side wouldnt have hurt

Why did they change it exactly?
I normally strongly dislike all these "modern" rebrands (I find the new CIBC branding a travesty), so I was surprised that I really like the new SanDisk logo!
Instead of remodelling their logo, maybe they should fix their mass produced consumer SSDs that are prone to wiping the data randomly.
I think more design knowledge even more or less esoteric parts are important for more or less every person...
Amazing video.
When you thought you're getting a critique video but got education instead
I like the logo design, but the cut off lower parts of the S feels eh to me
I'm just happy they didn't go with the bland minimalism that most tech companies are doing right now. Just by looking at the new SanDisk logo, new consumers will know it's a tech company.
Better than a boring font at least ill give em that
