PBS was and is so special. I too remember all of those shows in the 70s. What a different time. There were only nine channels on TV to choose from back then. And no remote control.

I used to fake sick in 8th grade just to stay home and watch Captain and Mr Moose. When I’d hear that theme music playing, it was so cathartic. I had won. Then nighttime would get so depressing. Can’t fake two days in a row. Not that good of an actress. I went on to be a teacher and sometimes when certain students weren’t in class, it’d bring back memories that made me chuckle inside.

I honestly believe, that Rogers and Keeshan were a calming influence on my Boomer generation of kids...Maybe they even were responsible for the upcoming hippie situation, with the emphasis being on kind and loving towards other people. I new a kid who grew up in a bad household..lots of verbal abuse, drinking, etc. But the kid so looked forward to escaping in to programs like this, as a child. Sad, but true!

I am blessed to be old enough to have seen the very first Captain Kangaroo, as well as the first Mickey Mouse Club shows, both of which started in 1955, when I was five years old. After the Captain closed for the day, another children's morning classic appeared, Romper Room with Miss Josey, which started at 9:00 AM, "when the clock looks like a chair without any legs", as she used to say. Even though I was five, I was inquisitive enough to ask my Mom, why Romper Room wasn't on at 3:00 PM, when the clock ALSO looked like a chair without any legs. I was told that it only worked when the chair sat against THAT wall, and not when it was against the other wall. That was OK with me, although I wanted another Romper Room. These were the days before reruns, and WAY before such things as VCRs and especially streaming. If you missed a show in those days, that was it, you missed it. In many ways, it was really a simpler time than today. I can remember going out all afternoon riding my bicycle and being told be home before dark. That was it, just be home before dark. Can you imagine that today? Now you can call your kid on his/her phone to find out where they are. No portable phones then for ANYONE. All phones were hardwired into your houses walls. I can remember having to sit with my Mom waiting for a man from the phone company to install a second phone in my poarents bedroom, so one or the other wouldn't have to run downstairs to the one phone in our kitchen.
I used to watch Mr. Rogers with my son when he was little, on the rare occasions that I was home during the day, as I worked.

I had no idea that Captain Kangaroo had ever been on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. As a child, I used to see both shows. I always loved the opening to Mr Roger's Neighborhood. I was always excited about the adventure that was coming up. Then the show ended, and I felt sad only to go through the same cycle the next day. I wish these two classy men were still here to provide moral, ethical programming for children in today's world. Children today need to see positive role models of all races, colors, sexes, religions, backgrounds, and ethnicities.
