The most tragic thing about Tai Lung is when he finally opens the scroll and he sees a reflection of himself, he says “It’s nothing!” This shows how little value he had for himself because he was so determined with trying to earn validation from Shifu and becoming the Dragon Warrior that when he was denied his destiny, he was consumed with rage and hatred, especiallyfor himself. Truly a tragic character who really just wanted appreciation from his father figure.
i believe whats also interesting is how he looks AT his reflection, it seems he is reflecting, he understands, "who have i become?" he betrayed everyone and everything he held dear for that power he thought he was owed, and it WAS nothing, he was left with only himself, what was he himself now worth after doing all these bad deeds? He sacrificed everything and when he got the scroll, which was nothing more than a cute message, the man in the mirror is pitiable.
What’s also funny is that Tai Lung handles the scroll in the EXACT same way as Shifu when they look through it. Another telling example of taking after his father.
@ I beg to differ; I’ve read some pretty good Chinese works. It’s just that, in such a large country, there’s a lot more amateur writers and the cliches run rampant. And the huge media corporations tend to not care so much about quality, they just make it as flashy and feature-bloated as possible.
One part I really like, and often see overlooked, is how after Po lays out his insecurities to Shifu, we see that Tigress heard the whole thing and finally started to soften up and feel sorry for him, and realized he was actually taking Kung Fu seriously, not "treating it like a joke" as she previously stated.
At first, Oogway letting himself pass on when Shifu needs him most doesn't make sense. But it's actually a selfless act. Yes, he could've easily defeated Tai Lung again, but if he had, Shifu would never learn to accept Po or forgive himself for "creating" Tai Lung, and Po wouldn't have become the Dragon Warrior or stopped loathing himself.
Kung Fu Panda is deadass one of the very, Very, VERY few movies with a plus sized main character that doesn't change himself for the story but learns to love himself. Also, although this is a comedy and Jack Black is a funny guy, the fact that his body isn't consistently the butt of the joke is amazing to me
The character development, the fight choreography, the lessons, how well it depicts ancient China, it's all just perfect. In fact, originally, the Chinese government was against this movie being shown in China, thinking America couldn'tdo a Kung-Fumovie right, especially one that looked so goofy at first glance. Then they actually watched it and relented, wondering why their own films hadn't captured their own culture this well.
There are really two things that make Po such a good fighter. 1. He's incredibly tough. So much crazy happens to him in these movies and barely gets scratched. 2. He's innately great at improvising in combat. Put him in any situation, with any objects nearby and he can easily turn it into a weapon and use the situation to his advantage.
He's also revealed in the Nickolodeon series to be a 'technique chameleon' in the same vein as characters like Taskmaster from marvel, and an absolute prodigy with Qi techniques, having picked up the Wind Hammer technique after being on the receiving end of it.
He's not just tough physically, but also mentally. On top of all the pain he takes in training and combat, he was also transparently loathed, mocked and degraded by his own idols. He took in the worst reasons why you should never meet your heroes on the chin, and either laughed it off or trained it off.
You're so spot on about Monty Oum. I remember when he was still working on RvB, and there were community rumblings about why a certain character was grouped in with a bunch of "elite" soldiers when he didn't appear to be all that extraordinary, and Monty replied in a thread, pointing out a specific exchange involving that character where he very deftly swaps equipment with another character he's fighting, and despite that other character being way better than him, he still managed to snag a weapon from them and use it to ultimately corner them. Those fight scenes are so well put together.
This movie came out when I was only 8, and my class and family all collectively agreed that Tai-Lung was done *FILTHYYYY* Still. Was one of the greatest Dreamworks villains created.
I think about this sometimes and, like, Tai Lung is probably a better fighter than Po. But he goes into that fight already losing the mental game. He thinks he needs the scroll to be worthy and complete. Po knows that he’s already good enough. That kind of mental edge wins fights.
32:50 so if you wanna see the history of the furious five thats not really in the main films but they do have a 2d animated film called legends of the five, that has the origins of them all, and its super freakin sweet, baby viper is such a precious bean
Fun Fact: The Furious Five are all based on the Northern Chinese Martial Arts called Wuxing. Monkey, Tiger, Snake, Mantis, Crane; but the traditional martial arts were Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake, and Dragon. Which is a good reference in Tai Lung and Po, Tai Lung being a Snow Leopard and his fighting style, while Po represents Dragon as the Dragon Warrior. The care that goes into these movies is amazing
10:57 Fate works the same way. Many stories where the protagonist learns of their fate and tries everything they can to change it, end with them bringing the very demise they tried to avoid.
Angelina Jolie herself wanted to be Tigress so bad in the first movie. And she really got the role. Both her and Jack Black were in Shark Tale before Kung Fu Panda 1.
Fun fact: this movie was so well appreciated in China that the CCP launced a commission to figure out how an american film managed to represent their culture better than their own domestic film industry.
The way I see it like this: Tai Lung was raised to be the Dragon Warrior. He strove to be someone else, because that’s what he thought he had to be. Po was trained in a way unique to him. He was trained in his own identity. The Dragon Warrior can’t be you if you’re not you. Hence why it’s a mirrored scroll.
"Oogway is my favourite character!" I don't blame you Alicia, Oogway IS the best. But damn. You do seem to have a knack for choosing characters that are destined to die as your favourite.
The thing about the dragon scroll may be cheesey, but honestly at 37 years old I find it to be true. Keep in mind, to open the scroll you have to he "worthy," both physically and spiritually. You have to have both trained hard and learned fitness and technique (which is why Poe couldn't open it immediately) and you have to still be humble and willing to learn (which is why Tai Lung wasn't worthy). If you're already at that point...there is no secret ingredient. It's just you.
the fact that theres "not secret ingredient is the whole point of the movie, Po is special not because he is chosen one (later movies make change it a little, but still) is because he is who he is, he learn to figth because he love the five and Shifu, he want to be better not for the power but to be a bette version of himself, in fact i can assure you that theres a universe that with a little change Tai Lung, Tigress or any other of the five could have been the Dragon warrior, but in this moment Po was the perfect one because of who he is as a person.
Oogway's and Shifu's arguments on control were amazing cause neither of them were wrong. Shifu was saying that there are things in the world we can control and that was no illusion, but Oogway was saying that certain things are beyond your control, and it's foolish to try and do that. Like he said, that seed will grow to be a peach try, no matter how much he took care of it, no matter the method of how he took care of it, it would still be a peach tree 20:51 Don't worry, this won't be the last time we see him

the best thing about this movie is undoubtedly the bridge fight between tai lung and the five. literally, the animators went up to their superiors and said they had no idea how to do it, because nothing like it had been done before in 3d animation. they had to figure that shit out on their own, and the result is *amazing*
I love these movies. One of the major themes that I very much appreciate (though it has been argued that the final skadoosh somewhat contradicts it), is best exemplified by the summation of "there is no secret ingredient." All the characters seem to have this assumption of Oogway keeping some secret source of mystic power or something, given how they talk about the Dragon Scroll; even though he keeps insisting that you can only do your best and keep working hard. Everyone talks about the power "granted" by the Dragon Scroll by describing what the Dragon Warrior is said to be capable of. Nobody ever considers that these are achievements of the master *who would be named* "Dragon Warrior", instead assuming that the Scroll has some secret techniques or mystic power to grant them. Meanwhile, Oogway keeps saying that you have to accept that you cannot control fate or destiny, and simply have to keep trying your hardest and doing your best. The self-acceptance that Po expresses is the closest thing to a "secret ingredient" in the whole thing... except that it ISN'T "secret" at all, because Oogway is doing his damnedest to convey that information the whole time! xD ALSO: Mr. Ping is a top tier dad. Yup-yup.
Fun fact that I expect like 1000 other people or more will also say in the comments: The Wuxi finger hold was just a legend made up to scare students, and you can see how Tai Lung was terrified of it deep down. However, because Po learned the "secret" to the Dragon Scroll, he made the Wuxi finger hold a legitimate technique capable of doing what legend says it does. "To make something special, you just have to believe it's special" did in fact give power to the Dragon Warrior.
I love this I watched it with my brothers and their friends and my dad and cousin....I was a wee lad ...good times good times....Kung fu Panada 2 tho is my fav I watched it with my eldest brother
Not saying that he deserves to be acknowledged as a good dad(he really is a great dad)... but it is Shifu's fault Tai Lung ended up that way. Shifu gassed him up for so long saying he was the dragon warrior and then he didn't even try to cheer him up or tell him it was okay when he wasn't. Tai-Lung isn't justified but he's understandable and It IS Shifu's fault. I think more people need acknowledge fault as something being a fault. That said I wished their relationship resolved for the better, Shifu was still a great father even with his faults
I’m so glad you’re watching these! Yeah, it’s corny, but it’s important. The dragon scroll lesson that “you are enough” is so valuable, especially to the target audience of kids. There’s no secret technique that makes you suddenly complete, just the hard work and confidence.
Alicia: Gandlaf's my favorite character. Gandalf: Fly you fools. Alicia: Boromir's my favorite character. Boromir: *Dies* Alicia: Oogway's my favorite character. Oogway: My time has come.
I find it funny that they restricted all of Tai Lung’s limbs & appendages except for his tail. In The Simpsons, one of the criminals; Sideshow Bob is so dangerous that they put cuffs evens on his curly hair.
I think the implication was that his tail, along with the rest of his body, was paralyzed by Oogway's pressure point attack. And the warden unintentionally returned feeling to him when he stomped on it to taunt him.
I like the theology of the peach tree always destined to grow as a peach tree. As Oogway said, you may wish for it to be an apple or orange tree, but no matter what you say or want it to be, that peach tree is always going to become a peach tree. Because that’s what it was destined to be from the moment it sprouted/was born.
31:50 Well if you want specifics (and it really isn’t spoiler stuff, I promise), it warps the target directly to the Spirit Realm, basically forcing the Oogwey disappearance trick on someone (complete with flowers too).
I have watched this movie way too many times, and that includes the directory commentary as well lol. Here's a fun tidbit: The artist paid a lot of attention to color choices and connected them to motifs. Gold is associated with heroic themes. Notice how there's gold in Tai Lung's eyes? That's because the writers really did their best to portray that to Tai Lung, he's still the hero of his story in his own mind. Which makes sense that you can see that moment of conflict on his face when Shifu apologizes; he views himself as in the right and justified, a hero facing their trials and tribulations, and this was a turning point for him to realize his wrongs and repent. It's so well written and the animation really does it justice *chefs kiss*.
The game for this movie actually shows part of what happens during the bit Po couldn't see the Five initially fighting where you actually fight the Axe Ox as a boss. Worth checking some playthrough of it just to see how crazy that would've been I also love Ooglay going "There's just news...Oh wait that is bad!" Such a funny bit
Something funny about this movie is that master Ogway says “One often meets his destiny on his path to avoid it” and master shifu sent the bird to avoid his.
I think my favorite detail of the movie is that Shifu caused Tai Lung to escape, because if he never sent the messenger, the feather would've never fallen down into the prison.
From the relationships and confidence Po builds, to how all the lessons Ugu teachs in the first movie carry over. Without a doubt one of the greatest trilogies in animation……And then they made a fourth. 😅
the opening was directed by James Baxter, a big name in the animation industry (Roger Rabbit, Beauty & The Beast, Lion King, El Dorado, How To Train Your Dragon, and so many others). he actually was brought onto Adventure Time in episodes literally named after him.
Tai Lung is such an underrated Dreamworks villain. I love how he fits so neatly into the theme of "self-worth" the movie has. Like Po, his entire sense of purpose was built around what others thought of him, mainly Shifu. He pushed himself to his physical and mental limit just to make Shifu proud by becoming the Dragon Warrior, only to realise it was all for nothing & Shifu had simply filled his adopted son's head with his own dreams and vanity. You can even see in the scene where Po lays out his own insecuritied to Shifu, the latter stares off into space for a second; perhaps wondering if this is how all his stundents, even Tai Lung, felt while he trained them Heck, even Tigress starts to soften up once she realises the kind of inner turmoil Po had and that her comments to him about not taking Kung Fu seriously, really hurt him. And the moment Tai Lung opens the Dragon Scroll and says "It's nothing!" is like the perfect metaphor for his character. He genuinely believes he's nothing deep down and its what fuels his rage.
So glad you enjoyed this one, I've loved kung fu panda since I saw it in theaters as a kid. Not only inspired me to take up animation, but absolutely brought some positivity for my little fat kid self lol Also, Monty Oum mention got me tearing up at work tbh, what a guy. Another huge inspiration
The kung fu panda franchise has hands down some of the best villains in animated movie history, Tai Lung is an absolute menace and the villain from the second one is sooo underrated
I was 5 when this came out and it was would like an everyone weekend at least bedtime film always was a belter of a film to watch with the lights oot and got to see the rest in cinemas😁
btw, i recommend the game based on this movie.. it is the most 2008-type gameplay you'll ever see, but it's genuinely a fun game because of that.. also, Oogway is the Iroh of this movie :)
I was cracking up how you went full 'restaurant owner' mode as soon as Po went downstairs to help his dad with the noodle shop. Po's dad really is a big sweetheart, and clearly loves his son very much, even if he doesn't always understand Po.
24:00 actually if i remember right they edited the lips/mouths for the Chinese version of the film so it would more naturally fit the dialogue. so the bowl scene is another example of the lengths the team went to make the movie.
Looking back I really enjoyed the scroll reveal both times. Where its just a highly reflective sheet that shows what they'll see. In this instance, both expect it hiding something of boundless power in the literal sense where Oogway made it figurative. Through such training and earning that title in Shifu's eyes, Po became strong enough to BE the dragon warrior. Showing him his work is what made him strong, not the scroll(though the confidence boost did wonders). Tai Lung was certainly strong enough, but his desires weren't for the Valley of Peace or love of Kung Fu. So when they both saw it for the first time, it was blank not noticing their reflection. Calling themselves nothing. Even Shifu fell into this trap as he misinterpreted Oogway's lesson with that scroll. Also the difference in their "Its nothing!" hurts. And I MISS the characterization and power of details in movies like this.
The sad thing about Tai Lung is that none of his story had to happen. Oogway trusted Shifu to raise Tai Lung, but then saw how he felt entitled to the role. Contrast to Po, who wished for it but was humble even when getting the role.
This movie is one of the greatest Dreamworks ever made. Kung Fu Panda 2 is the best one out of all the other movies. Also, if you haven’t already you need to react to “How to Train Your Dragon” it’s my favorite animated movie series.
Alicia: “They’re my favorite character”
You just signed their death warrant
Eeeeeeevery time.
Truly a tragic character who really just wanted appreciation from his father figure.
and in the end he got scadooshed :D
and Po says "It's blank". Very telling about an open mind willing to consume new knowledge and experiences.
Yet even when he got it, it didn't matter to him he didn't care because he only put stock in power.
i believe whats also interesting is how he looks AT his reflection, it seems he is reflecting, he understands, "who have i become?" he betrayed everyone and everything he held dear for that power he thought he was owed, and it WAS nothing, he was left with only himself, what was he himself now worth after doing all these bad deeds? He sacrificed everything and when he got the scroll, which was nothing more than a cute message, the man in the mirror is pitiable.
What’s also funny is that Tai Lung handles the scroll in the EXACT same way as Shifu when they look through it. Another telling example of taking after his father.
The funny part is, when this came out the entirety of the movie industry in China collectively said..."How the fuck didn't we think of this first!?"

12:30 and lucy liu is viper
Can’t wait for you to see the 2nd one that ones definitely my favorite
You gotta watch the short Secrets of the Furious Five for their backstory
Alicia: Gandlaf's my favorite character.
Gandalf: Fly you fools.
Alicia: Boromir's my favorite character.
Boromir: *Dies*
Alicia: Oogway's my favorite character.
Oogway: My time has come.
One of my favourite childhood movies of all time, alongside TMNT (1990) and Jurassic Park
25:30 She knows Monty Oum passed away right? Her talking of him ln present time confused me
16:41
So glad I’m not the only one who felt the likeness between him and Shan Yu. Same greys, same “BOW TO ME” attitude, same mustache too.
Next one is even better
31:50
Well if you want specifics (and it really isn’t spoiler stuff, I promise), it warps the target directly to the Spirit Realm, basically forcing the Oogwey disappearance trick on someone (complete with flowers too).
I love how compassionate viper is. She was the only one who was kind and felt bad with po the entire time
Avdol, Bucky, Agent Coulson, now Oogway. Alicia's favorite characters are dropping like flies
I have watched this movie way too many times, and that includes the directory commentary as well lol. Here's a fun tidbit:
The artist paid a lot of attention to color choices and connected them to motifs.
Worth checking some playthrough of it just to see how crazy that would've been
I also love Ooglay going "There's just news...Oh wait that is bad!" Such a funny bit
You are reacting to some of the best animated movies recently
Something funny about this movie is that master Ogway says “One often meets his destiny on his path to avoid it” and master shifu sent the bird to avoid his.
This is the quality content I've been wanting from my favourite vtube reactor
I think my favorite detail of the movie is that Shifu caused Tai Lung to escape, because if he never sent the messenger, the feather would've never fallen down into the prison.
From the relationships and confidence Po builds, to how all the lessons Ugu teachs in the first movie carry over. Without a doubt one of the greatest trilogies in animation……And then they made a fourth. 😅
There is a short film called the secrets of the furious 5. It gives you a look in each of their pasts
the opening was directed by James Baxter, a big name in the animation industry (Roger Rabbit, Beauty & The Beast, Lion King, El Dorado, How To Train Your Dragon, and so many others). he actually was brought onto Adventure Time in episodes literally named after him.
oh that's amazing! also Alicia should watch all of the films mentioned here, I love Road to El Dorado so much
They also made a TV series called "Kung Fu Panda Legends of Awesomeness" which takes place after the second movie
Technically non-canon but it is a good watch despite the animation quality. There’s also the Dragon Knight series.
You can even see in the scene where Po lays out his own insecuritied to Shifu, the latter stares off into space for a second; perhaps wondering if this is how all his stundents, even Tai Lung, felt while he trained them
Heck, even Tigress starts to soften up once she realises the kind of inner turmoil Po had and that her comments to him about not taking Kung Fu seriously, really hurt him.
And the moment Tai Lung opens the Dragon Scroll and says "It's nothing!" is like the perfect metaphor for his character. He genuinely believes he's nothing deep down and its what fuels his rage.
This along with Shark Tale was the movie that introduced me to the Goat himself Jack Black
Kung-Fu Panda was SO much better than it had any right to be. You have to feel for Tai Lung… even though he went SKADOOSH
Kung fu panda legends of awesomeness series
Omg I was wondering if she was gonna react to this… thank you!
I think Kung Fu Panda is one of my favorites movies of all time, not only animation (though I prefer animation than live action)
Skadoosh!
Alicia: Skadoosh or Oogway.
Me: Man, I miss Oogway.
So glad you enjoyed this one, I've loved kung fu panda since I saw it in theaters as a kid. Not only inspired me to take up animation, but absolutely brought some positivity for my little fat kid self lol
Also, Monty Oum mention got me tearing up at work tbh, what a guy. Another huge inspiration
Non-spoiler inspirational thing. Mr Ping... his restaurant in the second one is "Noodle and tofu shop". Never too late too follow your dreams.
The kung fu panda franchise has hands down some of the best villains in animated movie history, Tai Lung is an absolute menace and the villain from the second one is sooo underrated
Skadoosh or Oogway
Fun-fact Po’s dad isn’t a duck 🦆 he’s a goose🪿
I was 5 when this came out and it was would like an everyone weekend at least bedtime film always was a belter of a film to watch with the lights oot and got to see the rest in cinemas😁
SHAKDOSH! Kung fu Panda time!
btw, i recommend the game based on this movie.. it is the most 2008-type gameplay you'll ever see, but it's genuinely a fun game because of that..
also, Oogway is the Iroh of this movie :)
R.I.P Monty Ohm RWBY has and will always be one of my favorite animations purely because he understood both good writing and good direction of his art
I like how Po's dream in the beginning of the movie is a legitimate vision. It just doesn't make sense until the next movie.
This is another Dreamworks franchise where it also gets a TV series that gives the side characters more screen time than the actual films.
I was cracking up how you went full 'restaurant owner' mode as soon as Po went downstairs to help his dad with the noodle shop. Po's dad really is a big sweetheart, and clearly loves his son very much, even if he doesn't always understand Po.
Skadoosh!
The Monty Oum mention got me teary eyed, love the respect for his work and 100% agree.
OH MY SKADOOSH
There’s actually a side ‘movie’ called Secrets of the Furious Five that goes over each of their origins if you’re interested.
JACK BLACK IS THE BEST!!!!!
Alicia is going to LOVE the next two Kung Fu Panda movies.
There is no other movie with a bar to the level of "I'm not just a fat panda, I'm THE fat panda" 💯💯💯
The fastest click of my life, OOGWAY would be proud of my SKADOOSH
The sad thing about Tai Lung is that none of his story had to happen. Oogway trusted Shifu to raise Tai Lung, but then saw how he felt entitled to the role.
Contrast to Po, who wished for it but was humble even when getting the role.
one of my favorite movies. inspired me to learn martial arts as a child.
Oogway = Skadoosh tier GOAT.
This is one of the greatest films of all time, not animated films... just films. 10/10 borderline masterpiece.
This movie is one of the greatest Dreamworks ever made. Kung Fu Panda 2 is the best one out of all the other movies.
Also, if you haven’t already you need to react to “How to Train Your Dragon” it’s my favorite animated movie series.
The original Kung Fu Panda is a masterpiece and the sequel is somehow even better!
7:51 I read a comment claiming those are *pull* doors and weren't even locked...I don't know if that's actually true but I sort of want it to be true.
