Mado Shipwreck No.4 is a grain carrier of the Joseon Dynasty. It was loaded with grain and Grayish-blue powered celadon (Buncheong ware) collected as tax in Naju, Jeollanam-do Province, and sank in the waters of Ahnheung-ryang (one of the most hazardous maritime route) in between 1417-1425 on its way to the warehouse in Hanyang (the capital city of Joseon Dynasty).
The above data were determined by the wooden tables written ‘Naju Gwangheungchang (taxation office and also the storage) and Buncheong ware with the inscription of ’Naeseom (name of a government office)'.
Mado Shipwreck No.4 is the first vessel of the Joseon Dynasty, found in our history, and is a significant resource in a wide range of studies including the structure of the vessel, shipping system, and history of pottery of the time. After the archaeological excavation of the interior of the ship, it was buried again to salvage later in the future.
