I think almost every gamer knows the legacy of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, the famously horrible and difficult NES game known for being one of the worst NES games of all times.
I only knew of the game through AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd) and always laughed at the idea of playing it. But when I started the Extraordinarily Hard Games series, I always knew that eventually I'd have to do this one...

I actually like the concept of this level, that if you die as one character, you have to do something as a different character to get your life back, it was done not too good here but I think that concept would be pretty cool if it was explained better and more fleshed out
Strangely enough, a friend and I (who never played this game) came up with a similar concept for a game once, where if you were reduced to 0 hp you would be shunted into another world. There were two worlds, one sort of modern, one fantasy, and you were the same character in each, but with completely different histories, and you would keep getting flipped back and forth whenever you were reduced to 0 hp in one world. Our thought was that every time you got shunted to the other world, your max hp would shrink, and you lost when you ended up with 0 max hp, forced into an eternal flipping back and forth between the worlds.
Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance is kind of like that.
Genius game idea, atrocious execution
Yeah like a lot of games it's an interesting concept that was hideously badly implemented. The main problems that you have are that as Hyde you play the level 'backwards', and have to kill enough enemies before you get to the point you died as Jekyll. The obvious problem with this is that if you've gone that much distance into any level, there simply aren't enough enemies that spawn for you to avoid dying.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver used a similar concept as well, not a different character but you had different abilities in another world if i remember right. It's been ages since i played that.

Of all the games I wanted to see you finish, this was certainly not one of them.
Guess it depends on the viewer, because watching this was super entertaining for me. This game is just so unbelievably awful.

Exactly. But I mean he complains about every single level in MM2 that has a ton of enemies, meanwhile 12 shell jumps is a good level.
@@johnj4471 Because enemy spam is skilless, redundant, and frustrating, while kaizo tricks like shell jumps are satisfying to pull off, especially when the levels that use them are well-designed.
As he explained, the doors are difficult to enter, you have to be in a specific point to use them, so it's generally better to just keep moving because you need to keep moving forward anyways and when he said that the enemies constantly respawned so entering the doors were more trouble then they're worth.
@@Suindaer weird other people can actually deal with them. He’s just bad at enemies as evidenced by numerous Mario games as well as any of his hard games play through.

@@etherraichu Flash is no longer supported by browsers, true, but you can still download Flash players (Adobe and Newgrounds both have one) and if the hosting sites for various games are still around you can download the .swf flies from them by digging through the HTML for a direct link, which you can do the usual "right click and save target" dance. It's barely any different from using an emulator to play NES roms in the long run.

Nominee for notoriously hard game: Back to the Future 1 on NES. I had this as a kid and couldnt get past level 2.
Worst part is that you get 1 try for the final stage. If you lose, you have to go back to the beginning.
Even worse is playing through it all over to get the good ending, only to realize how bad the good ending is.
I have never seen the true ending. Good job! Catching up on the last 2 years of this series. I love it!

Mr. Gimmick is an extraordinarily hard game, especially if you want to get the secret treasures and the music is fantastic. MR. GIMMICK!!

This was an early release for the NES, back when developers were trying all sorts of new game mechanics to see what sticks.
Also, yes, they had to test the game... to ensure it wouldn't crash.

There were no "standards" for what games were expected to play like back then. People just made things, and the good things mostly stuck around.

Poor controls, nothing makes any sense or relates to the book it's just stuff happening, infinite enemies and difficult for the wrong reasons. Obviously all of these are due to the time period it was made in but it's still fucking garbage
Birds aggressively pooping everywhere is the most realistic game mechanic ever.
You know what I feel now? Closure. I watched the AVGN video when it dropped many years ago (10? 15?) And I've always wondered what was the game all about. And then you came and completed it with your usual patient, wholesome style. It all makes sense. You and James are the Jekyll and Hyde of youtube.

Ah, this takes me back! I lived in Milton Keynes for 6 months. This reminds me of my commute to the bus depot. Only thing missing is the 8 bit concrete cows.

It's fun to see you playing all thèse games. I know all of them from Le Joueur du Grenier's channel and now I feel nostalgic
I actually like that game, it's something special, precision platforming based not around speed, and action, but patience and persistence. Even though a lot of it is based on RNG, it's surprisingly fair, it gives a lot of time to properly react to stuff, and when it doesn't, it doesn't hurt too much.
I don't know why people think town folk hates Jekyll, they are just scared of the bomb men, and just accidentally hit Jekyll trying to run away. Theyare only able to attack Jekyll when bomb men are on screen.
The game definitely could be better, but I can't not appreciate the experiment this game is
This is the book/story our English class had us read this year, funny how they had a game and then you play it the day of the final test.
Remember to mention how Hyde uses his Psychowave to obliterate the brain enemies on your test.

I am impressed. As a kid I always gave up at the barrel level. I did manage to beat it once and was so mad that it just said "End" when you got to the church. Never knew about the true ending. Nice job.
what I'm taking away from this is that all of England hates Dr. Jekyll 🤔
This series needs to be way more frequent.
Try out Plok on the SNES. There’re two difficulty levels, Normal and Child’s Play. Normal mode is IMPOSSIBLE to beat all the way through. The challenge starts at the first boss and thereafter. SUPER fun game. Highly recommended!!
Edit: Now that I’ve mentioned it, I’m going to be super persistent and comment this on every Extraordinarily Hard Games vid that you post, because I’m actually dying to see you try it out.

Great video. Really enjoy this series. Great that you included the time spent. Gives an idea. I may try this one now. Gun.Smoke arcade was a brutal game I beat some months ago. I find that to be one of the hardest 2D games I completed. It might be interesting to try. The NES one is easy in comparison. Super Smash TV was no joke either on the SNES but not on the level of Gun.Smoke arcade. I would put Super Smash TV as one of the hardest SNES games that doesnt get alot of attention. Jim Power for the SNES was another one but also a very mediocre, overly difficult game. SSTV is very good.

One best days of my childhood is when Wal Mart switched this game out for Tysons Punchout on its demo.I had no nintendo at home.
Ryu, the real reason you didn't get hit by that last boss should be obvious! It was all of that intense hyperbolic time chamber-esque training you did in the Ninja Dodge Triple Bowser hell level from SMM2.

The money is for a lady in the window. sometimes you can enter doors (as you already noticed)
and that lady either beats the shit out of you, taking much of your money and make you go jekyll

Everyone wants to kill Jekyll because he's a murderous monster. When he transforms into Hyde, those clearly aren't monsters he's fighting because where the hell did they come from? That's how he views the townsfolk when he's in Hyde form.
