Under the original proposals of the infamous Beeching Report of 1963, the Isle of Wight was set to lose its entire railway network. And only fierce local opposition, from grassroots to local authorities, saved one line from closure. However, little did anyone know it at the time, but the Island Line wasn’t to be the only railway on the island to survive. Another would eventually, from the ashes of almost nothing but the plucky spirit of local enthusiasts, a few old coaches and an ancient steam locomotive, rise again and live on. Today it’s a perfect time capsule of what railway life used to look like on the island - and running alongside the Island Line, it’s a match made in quaint heaven. Let’s hop aboard and have an explore of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway!

So the link between the IOWSR and the NCL is :
The railway took ownership of 483 007 which is former LU 1938 stock which used to run on the (say it with me) Northern City Line
Everything links back to the Northern City Line 🤣

When the Steam railway started their services in 1971 they had track between Havenstreet and Wootton. This was extended to Smallbrook Junction in the late 90's in the other direction hence why you start the journey in the 'middle'. You can join the line at Wootton as the number 9 bus serves the station - its the only station that has a timetabled bus service, or you can join by train at Smallbrook c/o Islandline. Most car drivers visit via Havenstreet as it is the main site and has ample parking.
Wootton station was rebuilt to the Havenstreet side of Station Road due to the original station site suffering from landslips - it was decided to relocate to the other side due to this. The station site now is approximately 12 foot lower than it was in BR days as the site was levelled and lowered to build the platform. The original bridge still exists buried under the road, which was also widened when the railway was lifted. There is a manhole access in the road and this is inspected regularly.
Smallbrook has a stream running through it - it runs under Island line and can be seen from the Havenstreet end of the Smallbrook steam platform. If you look between the platforms at the Ryde end you can see the original foundations of the signal box that used to serve both lines. There was never a platform in BR steam days. As mentioned there is no road access to Smallbrook. Nor is there any power or running water. Bottled water is provided to staff, a diesel generator provides electricity, and a compost toilet is provided for passengers. As you round the corner away from Smallbrook there is an area known as Swanpond which is as it name suggests. Can't say I've ever seen swans though - I have seen ducks...
Still a fair bit of trackbed left between Wootton and Newport - some being a footpath. Bridges still intact and the tunnel under Fairlee Road in Newport now a pedestrian underpass. Still signs of the railway in Newport if you know where to look. Also many stations survive in private hands.

Lovely video! Back when I was a kid we had 2 holidays at Thorness Bay Holiday Camp near Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The first trip was in 1964 and we travelled by steam-hauled train from Ryde Pierhead all the way through to Cowes station where a coach took us to the holiday camp. I distinctly remember those carriages with the running/foot boards below the compartment doors. I was most disappointed to find that, upon our return two years later, the railway line had been closed, so I am thrilled to see a small part of it has been resurrected. I'm hoping that, one day, when all this COVID malarkey is only a memory that I will be able to take a trip back down south to see it for myself once again. Thank you!

They set up camp at Haven Street as that was the easiest option, but also, the pub up the road (White Hart?) was where they sealed the deal to save that line and also where they went for a drink when the last train from Newport went to Haven Street.

Thanks for he 2 great Isle of Wight videos Adam. I live on the IOW and am so glad you enjoyed your experience. The spelling of Wootton on your whiteboard should have 2 T's and not the one. The Wootton terminus now is before the original bridge (under Station Road) and the original station platform was therefore after the current station. The next station is Whippingham and not Whittington as you state. Whippingham station was built for the use of Queen Victoria. She used to alight there and be taken by carriage to her home at Osborne House. As a local I admit to taking these railways for granted. That reflects how much enjoyment you got out of your visit. You need to come back and try out the newly introduced Class 484 units. They are so good and you would also see the newly installed passing loop at Brading too. I love you videos and am so glad you are putting fresh stuff out for everyone's enjoyment 👍👍👍

Actually, Queen Victoria seems to have used Whippingham station once only. She travelled by paddle steamer from Gosport to Osborne Bay. If the weather was bad the paddler would divert to East Cowes.
