I was a bit in doubt by the lack of grandeur at the very opening: but the choice of a fast tempo pays great dividends in the fugue, which is utterly magnificent. This is what is so special about Grigory Sokolov: he never plays anything the same way. Everything is clearly the result of those hours of work and meditation at the keyboard before each concert.
After many years of investigating recordings of Bach on the piano I have come to the conclusion that no one plays Bach on the piano like Ruskies ... Sokolov, Weissenberg, Nikolayeva especially, Feinberg Richter etc etc
One God. Glad that you credit Him for compositional and performance talent such as this. Bach dedicated all of his music to the glory of God alone (Soli Deo Gloria (SDG) and he would write this at the end of a composition.
For me personally, I easily prefer the brilliant recording of Carl Seemann over this one by Sokolov. Seemann knows how to the give the music enough space that each note can make the required impact on the hearer (just perfect for Bach's complex music) and yet still makes the whole sound effective as well.
great selection of sokolov, real bach and real perfect phrasing +sound
The composition and the execution are both so magnificent I am left speechless.

Sokolov plays the opening movement (Toccata) at a the tempo it should be played. Masterful, he completely understands the piece.
I didn't see tempo markings in the manuscript. Did you? Or did Bach tell you what "tempo it should be played"?

I can't understand the mentality of the people who gave those four thumbs down - what do they want?
+Gerry Rains They do not know the difference.
+ Gerry R ils ne sont pas musiciens et ne pratiquent pas le piano
Ou ivre devant leurs ordinateurs...
sokolovs tempo is quite obviously off actually. im not saying It's not nice. But some prefer a stricter tempo
Gerry, open your eyes a look around in horror, the world is full of them...braindead! lol
At least the toccata is toccating ! And the staccato of the fugato ! Blessed are you, M; Solokov for that wonderful toccata !

With that tempo he must have been late for the bus. Or he is only showing off.
Or Bach had a few too many coffees.
