I think its possible that maby his ability is that if he holds his breath he can actually remember something from his human life each time but the memories will go away once he breaths again or there just memories he doesn’t want to mention
if jax was holding his breath the whole time the characters would've seen how jax looked without holding his breath at some point, also jax gets choked in episode 1 which could look similar to how he looks when he holds his breath
Another thing you could have mentioned is that the series sometimes had to wait for Murder Drones to release an episode to release the trailers and the episode itself was another thing that delayed the release time of each episode.
im pretty sure that gooseworx confirmed that all the circus members are souls trapped in the circus so there goes the "jax is an npc" theory so its more likely he is a developer that worked with kinger and but didnt imidiatly playtest the project and accidentaly got trapped there, unlike poor kinger or a hacker of sorts though if i had to ignore that and make theory... what if all characters are ais like caine and caine is an older model teaching newer models how to make adventures? i heard that, to make GPT 2 follow morals, open ai made an ai trained on phrases rated by how much it abides to their morals and an ai without morals so the ai doesnt make incoherent nonsence and they used both models as teachers so all GPT 2 says must satisfy both teachers demands. What if something similar is happening here? just a quick theory that i wanted to let out that is probably not true considering how the main cast is all human
