Fun fact, when a ship is lost in the warp, the inhabitants scale of time can be anywhere from 5 seconds to 50 million years. So, theoretically, the Lamenters couldve been lost there for thousands of years... or 30 minutes
they were probably in there since the dawn of time, going through several generations of marines with only their serfs as recruit material...and no toilet roll.

They lament but never give in.
Something to remember, when Guilliman reinforced the chapters with Primaris, he reinforced the Lamenters FIRST. The 100 or so survivors were given enough Primaris battle brothers to bring them up to FULL STRENGTH. They haven't been at full strength since their founding!
Imagine this; Sanguinius is revived. All of the Blood Angel chapters gather to him. He walks up to Dante and embraces him. "You are not my son. You, are my brother." He gives Dante the Blood Angels as his personal chapter. Sanguinius turns to the Legions. "You are all my sons." He steps down from his stage. Walks past all of his Successor Chapters. That’s why I’m an Iron Hand at heart. Clear objectives. Meet the enemy, crush them, move on to the next target. No glory, no honor fapping, no showboating. Just big guns, heavy armor and unyielding combat doctrine.
I disagree. I think it’s because no matter what happens, no matter what they face, they remain the most devoted entities to the imperium’s people. Ten percent civilian casualties is too many for them, and the entire company dying to save them is a justified cost.
The story with the Ultramarine on that ork planet seems obviously about how hard it can to determine the value of doing being tactical vs. doing the right thing.

Concerning the "ork and his gun" story, the TLDR version is: warp travel is wierd, and orks don't really navigate in the warp. An ork spacehulk makes a warp-jump, and due to warp shenanigans, arrives right where they jumped from, a few days before they jumped. The warboss decides to take advantage of this to get a spare of his favorite shoota, and the resulting confusion stops a waaagh before it could get going.

The Badab War was notable because it was a sector-wide civil war/insurgency primarily fought between two varieties of loyalist space marines. The Astral Claws and their fellow chapters like the Lamenters were tasked with guarding the sector from its own warp-tainted region, the Maelstrom. Lugft Huron basically was a great leader who coulda properly purged the Maelstrom, but the high lords of terra repeatedly shot down his proposals without full consideration or let the crusade get underway but then crippled it by diverting whole chapters elsewhere because of some other crisis. Huron eventually goes "fuck it better to beg forgiveness then ask permission", and starts doing all these questionably legal things to build up a crusade force locally. Worst of all is that he low-key stopped paying taxes (claiming checks totally got put in the mail). This escalated until he was declaring the sector independently governed by himself, clashing first with local power groups and then with forces dispatched by Terra once things got out of hand. Astral Claws were doing bigger crimes behind the scenes (all innthe name of building up a crusade force for the good of the imperium), but all the evidence indicates they didn't fall to chaos during the Badab War. They fell *after losing*, and Huron is NOT out of the picture after that.

My years in The Guard has taught me many things, first among them is that if you're fighting alongside Blood Angles or one of their successor chapters, and you hear someone yell "I Am Sanguineous!!!"...just start running.
"You can't have a chapter the size of twenty thousand marines or there will be problem, but I will have a chapter with about twice as much, no problem." - probably Guilliman
I think a fair explanation as to why the Lamenters are indeed popular (at least for their lore) is that they're like the 40k of 40k. For most people (DK included), 40k is brutal, unforgiving and just all-around horrible. But it's interesting for it and it's even more impressive to hear about people who do their best to be noble and righteous in such a vicious environment and still push forward. The lamenters are the most intense version of that. They're extremely loyal, despite constant suspicion and rejection, they will sacrifice themselves to protect humanity time and time again, yet despite their best efforts, great heroism and capable military planning, the universe just keeps fucking with them like with noone else. The parts where I would add to make this episode do them a bit more justice is simply emphasising just how noble and true to their cause they actually are. It's that nobility among all that tragedy that makes them stand out from the rest of the Space Marines and I think that's what made them popular enough to win in the patreon vote. But ofc, if anyone wants more details on the Lamenters, I'd say Arch did a very good video on them.
I love reading about Black Templar numbers. I forget the short story I read but an Inquisitor said that he would not be surprised if the Black Templars number over 20k, but they are all off fighting xenos which frees up a huge chunk of the rest of the Imperium for other things. So they just count them as being compliant and move on to things closer to home.
I'm just starting to get deeper into 40k,and kind of both glad and sad to have learned about Lamentors. This universe deserves kind and caring guardians of innocence. But they need a god damn break. Give them a break, they deserve it!!!! Why do they suffer so!? T_T
Because that's their shtick. All this hell they've gone through yet they hold on to their ideals and never gave into chaos when others have with less suffering. They are endurance incarnate and something to aspire to.
Well, you may have noticed: half the time it's because they chose to be heroes and care about the regular people in the imperium. Most chapters wouldn't have thought twice about the slaves on Slaughterhouse five.
As a die-hard Lamenters fan (their stories got me to learn more about Warhammer) i can safely say you covered all the important points. Good job. Thought you forgot to mention the best part about the penance crusade: you can't deny a fight. If there is trouble on a system you HAVE to go, so yeah pretty much suicidal crusades

I think the major thing you get wrong about Lamenters is probably the reason why people like them. They're cool because even though they get knocked down they keep getting back up, and they never lose their loyalty. "For those we cherish, we die in glory!"
Since you guys are doing Deathguard next episode, maybe look into the story of the group of Deathguard marines who had their connection to Chaos severed. Once they had their connection to Chaos cut, they realized what disgusting bloated monsters they had become, and they all died slowly and painfully, regretting everything. It's a really sad story and it shows how much they were manipulated and blinded by their loyalty to Mortarion.

As one of the dozen Lamenters fans, we did have rules for a named model last edition, but he got moved to legends since he never actually had a model. Malakim Phoros, the chapter master. He was supposedly killed by the Minotaurs, but there are rumors of his survival. His major thing was that he was able to keep the Black Rage at bay, and put himself just to the edge of falling to it and pull himself back after a fight through sheer willpower alone. Edit: Posted this right before Bricky described him lol.
I know this comment is over a year old but found out an interesting thing that may confirm malakim phoros stull being alive, as during the trial of Gabriel seth there is a chapter master referred to as “malakim of the lamenters”
Speaking of the Badab War, one of the Chapters which participated in it was the Carcharodons Astra, or Space Sharks. They might be a good topic for the future, especially their absolute unit of a Chapter Master, Tyberos the Red Wake
I find really interesting all the debates around their origin, given that they are weird, strange, violent and unsettling as FUCK! Weird gray skin (Raven Guard?) and black eyes (Night Lords) Stealthy and cunning infiltrations (Raven Guard) RIP AND TEAR AND COMPLETE DISREGARD OF COLLATERAL DAMAGE (World Eaters) Those guys are awesome!
Bring up the Unhallowed Heart, that was a sick battle. The Lamenters' biggest appeal is that through all that, they STILL held noble and true. Not once have they faltered; they exemplify the gritty resilience of unyielding virtue. In a way, they're a statement about how purity fares in 40k - a microcosm of grimdark itself
They are what the space marines were meant to be they are peak space marine except for the whole lick thing but we shall ignore that to be able to stick through the worst of the worst and cone out barely clinging to life just to dive head first back into it to save even a few citizens
@@AlexWithington This is also why if Sanguinius was ever brought back, he would consider the Lamenters the ones to carry on his true will. All of his other sons have focused on battle for the sake of battle. Only the Lamenters hold true as to WHY one should go into the battle. Yes, the Blood Angels have his color scheme and are his original legion. They have deviated however, the rage and helplessness at witnessing his death over and over again in their minds has turned them into battle maniacs that lash out. I like the chapter and it shows the sheer ferocity with which Sanguinius was able to bring to bare upon his foes. Yet, they have lost the most important part; Why one should leap into battle in the first place.
"Emperor's Teeth!" or "By the Emperor!" are both used quite often in the 40K universe, and could easily be used to replace things like "Oh my God!" or "Jeeezus!"
This is by far my favourite episode. You two made me love the Lamenters. I actually really like the lamentors story, they got dealt a shit hand, and all their brothers scorn them, their main allies turned to chaos, and they still stay loyal and do what's right , no matter how hard or dangerous, even when other chapters don't. Id say they're a shining example of what I'd like too see in a chapter
Don’t forget how they tried to answer Dante’s call for help and promptly got attacked by demons on there way to Baal and after making it there the fight was over and this was just before Dante bolstered them (I think)
*stands still and stoic. Tears rolling down there face.* yes I am in fact crying and there is nothing wrong with that. You see these brave men deserve our tears. The warp jump took the Ork vessel back in time and upon realising it the Ork Warboss went to kill his other self to get another copy of his favorite gun.

Mantis also got a penitence crusade and the chapter master was executed. Astral Claws went on and became a little known warband called The Red Corsairs.
And yet they remain loyal. it would be so easy to quit, to give up and run, to give in to chaos and be taken care of... But that's just not the Lamenter way. A tip of a commissars hat for unflinching, unwavering, dauntless loyalty in the face of it all.

The main battle barge of the lamenters is called Mater Lachymarum, "the mother of tears". Which is like the most metal name for a ship I've ever heard.
I always liked the Crimson Fists most. They seemed the most emblematic of how crazy bad the setting can get. Major first founding chapter, tons of lote and victories to their name. Still nearly get wiped out.. by accident.
They're unlucky, sure, but their genetic predisposition for melancholy is what I would say serves to severely alienate them from the other space marines, who are generally very unemotional and logical in their decisions. Also the colour scheme is badass but fuck I would never paint it.
So as a Astral Claw, I must apologize to my Lamenter cousins. Sorry my chapter master was being like that. Luckily, I’ve gotten a refounding of the chapter.
To clarify; after the Badab War, all of the Astartes Chapters allied with Luggy were ordered into lengthy Penitent Crusades. The Mantis Warriors managed to pull through their Crusade and after saving the lives of 270,000 imperial citizens from a tyranid hive fleet, were deemed fit to recieve the Emperor's blessing once more by a host of Inquisitorial agents. The Executioners, another Astartes group allied to the Astral Claws, presumably all died fighting Necrons after fucking up a bunch of secessionist factions at the edges of the galaxy. Finally, the Astral Claws would hereby be known as the Red Corsairs. And Lufgt Huron would change his name to Huron Blackheart. Basically just badass Chaos Space Pirates. These guys deserve their own episode all to themselves.
Minotaurs are a weird chapter of SMs. They are based on Spartans, like the couple of models available from Forge World look like straight up ancient Greek armor. They're also basically the ass boys of the High Lords of Terra, so they get all the best shit and best resources, but they're basically in charge of taking out other space marine chapters. Like I think historically they've fought more space marines than heretics or xenos. They've even fought the Custodes before. My personal theory is they exist so if the High Lords ever get really heretical they'll still have a chapter of SMs to bodyguard them.
They are a representation of Greek check and balance system. They are executioners of space marines, BUT they also watch the High Lords. If the High Lords of Terra ever go heretical, the Minotaurs will execute THEM.

I think they're either my first or second favorite faction (at least first or second fav Imperium faction) for EXACTLY this reason; its really inspiring to read about or see someone who, despite fate itself seeming to take a sadistic pleasure in ruining their lives, they stand back up and move forward without undue complaint and without turning traitor. And not because of some zealous fervor for their Emperor or because they like violence: they do it to fulfill at least part of Big E's goals for his Space Marines:
"They are my Bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity."

Mad respect to the Lamenters.

They lament but never give in.
I've liked the other members of their founding better
Something to remember, when Guilliman reinforced the chapters with Primaris, he reinforced the Lamenters FIRST. The 100 or so survivors were given enough Primaris battle brothers to bring them up to FULL STRENGTH. They haven't been at full strength since their founding!
Imagine this;
Sanguinius is revived. All of the Blood Angel chapters gather to him.
He walks up to Dante and embraces him. "You are not my son. You, are my brother."
He gives Dante the Blood Angels as his personal chapter.
Sanguinius turns to the Legions. "You are all my sons."
He steps down from his stage.
Walks past all of his Successor Chapters.

How is the crusade going?
Thank you. I get that they had to shorten the Badab War (and what came before), but damn, a bit lengthier wouldn’t have hurt.
@@kuehnjakob it doesn't help that you could write a whole novel series on the badab war.... but they haven't. so we only really have the broad strokes.

Failbaddon the Armless. Bacause with the old metal modells you just could *not* make the damn arms stick to the figure!
Somewere on the way to the 13th black crussade he got a plastic model (with holding arms) and became useless for his point costs.
And thus warth born Failbaddon the Harmless.
The people that got his arms to stick used industrial adhesives, or a jewelry drill and wire.
I hate their piss color
Laughs in having to paint that checker shoulder pad in a few weeks agh
@@valentinom.4292 You want piss color? Look up Marine Malevolent.
@@ObsidiaBlack1 yeah, they suck. Lamenters are cool.
It is pain. But for those we Cherish, we dry in glory.
Statistic idea: amount of times bricks has said untold 🅱️illions
Will be untold billions by the end of the podcast
We covered the most depressed guardsmen division, now for the most depressed space marine chapter.
So as a Astral Claw, I must apologize to my Lamenter cousins. Sorry my chapter master was being like that. Luckily, I’ve gotten a refounding of the chapter.
Oh boy Look at all these traitors.
That sounded too happy and it broke me.
I don't like the Minotaurs, from an aesthetic and model standpoint, they look cool, lore wise, they are cunts.
Not gonna lie...
That makes me want to see their extinction.
You left out where the Space Sharks linked up with the Minotaurs, did a big 80's bro five and then proceeded to literally rip apart the Lamenters(along with everyone else in their way).
Traitors siding with traitors...
I can't say I am surprised.
I think they're either my first or second favorite faction (at least first or second fav Imperium faction) for EXACTLY this reason: its really inspiring to read about or see someone who, despite fate itself seeming to take a sadistic pleasure in ruining their lives, they stand back up and move forward without undue complaint and without turning traitor. And not because of some zealous fervor for their Emperor or because they like violence: they do it to fulfill at least part of Big E's goals for his Space Marines:
"They are my Bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity."
For those we Cherish, we die in glory!
Mad respect to the Lamenters.
I honestly really want a whole episode on the Minotaurs and/or the Carchadons (Space Sharks). Those two chapters are so damn cool and they have such cool lore
Eh, borderline heretics.
I suppose we'll see an episode about them when (not if) they finally fall.
Now that DK has been introduced to the chapter of eternal suffering, ever gonna show him the TTS side video? Only a single spoiler to the show, but *perfectly* encapsulates what happened to the Lamenters throughout their lifespan.
