Inimitable VH…..so glad I attended several of his Chicago recitals. 1970s. Once arrived at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall 3 hrs early, first in line, to get front row stage seat . Back then, stage seat was just a folding chair…..But…maybe 8ft from the left hand of VH, with clear view of whole keyboard….as he ripped through his version of the Rachmaninov piano sonata 2 Masterpiece.
Amazing. His playing is effortless and his interpretation feels like the only possible one.

The piece is designed to show off the performer's technique. It does succeed. But that is all. Ho-hum.

I love all your videos Roger..... oh wait.........
And yet it is characterful, capricious, charming even and highly inventive. So what if a piece isn’t designed to plumb the depths of the human soul?
