Brandon thank you for the awesome video and the effort you put in making this material available. I am taking an introduction to outboard engine maintenance and repair course at a local marine technical school and I was looking for something to explain how the designer's achieve the left hand rotation in an outboard.
I believe I have a counter rotating lower on a 1974 70hp Evinrude. Possibly someone swapped the lower unit to a newer one at some point. Is there a way someone could’ve accidentally put the lower together wrong which made the gears opposite? When the shift rod goes up the prop spins left. Shift rod down the prop spins right. I ended up just purchasing a counter rotating prop but I ant to make sure before running the motor at higher rpm
Trying to get my head around why a CC rotation gearbox would be different to a conventional one? Why wouldn't they just reverse the control box and use a left hand prop?
In a standard gearcase, reverse isn't as strong as forward. This gearcase, is just built so the reverse gearing is equal, and the shift mechanism is reversed. This allows you to use any standard controller.
I have a problem. I bought a boat with a great running 1980 50 hp Evinrude. Took it to a boat mechanic to get a new fused link and have them install an impeller and unclog the pee hole. They informed me that my boat goes in reverse when the control lever is pushed forward and forward when it's pulled back. Everything concerning linkage is correct so they assumed that someone swapped the original lower unit with a counter rotating one and it has a RH prop. The colors are slightly different and the prop is a 13.5 x 15 and 13 splines. I agree it's a counter rotating as the prop spins counter clockwise while the motor is going clockwise. So to correct this I have been looking for a LH prop that fit's. I can't find a LH 13 spline 13.5' 15 pitch anywhere. I have no idea what the Counter lower unit came from but it works on this 50 horse If I had that LH prop. Any idea's anyone? The parts schematic calls for a smaller prop for this engine. I can only find LH props for Susuki's in 13.5 but all are 15 splines.
Enjoy your videos, very informative. I am trying to troubleshoot a 1999 200hp evinrude model E200FCXEEN. It shifts into reverse & neutral fine but it doesn’t want to stay in forward unless the throttle in increased. Any help would be appreciated. Ive tried calibrating the shift rod& adjusting the cable. Could it be internal gears in the lower unit?
Thanks for taking the time to post videos they’re super helpful. Any chance you sell used parts? I’m looking for few small little things for a 40hp. I’d rather send my money your way before I go to eBay.
Well depends on what you are looking for. Most of mine come from boats.net But, a lot come from ebay too.Problem with a pre 1990's 15, is a lot of the tools you would want (seal installers) are discontinued. You can go used, but then that raises another problem. Evinrude replaced a lot of the sing-lip back-to-back gearcase seals with single lip seals, which require a different tool anyway. This is explained in the 9.9/15 HP gearcase reseal video.
@@BrandonsGarage cheers. I was after the removal tool for the gearbox brass bushing. I am in Australia and tried some USA online sites with no luck. Guess I will improvise like most others. Cheers for your reply and look forward to new videos from you.

Always enjoy your uploads Brandon. Thanks a lot.
Great video how do you do the seals and reassemble do you have a video for that.
Nothing like this video is useless. Thanks for doing it.

Usually just locally.
What year is your engine, and what are you looking for?
Brandon's Garage ‘92-40hp need a rear handle lever for the cover latch (any color) and one of the shift/throttle linkage levers its part number 432015
Hey Brandon, how can I get in touch with you?
Where do you get your tools from?
I am after some for an evinrude 15hp? I have tried marine engine, boats.com etc... But am out of luck.
