This scene perfectly encompasses the situation the characters find themselves in. In the midst of all the chaos and darkness, they are still able to find a moment of joy and escape, however brief. Just as Dumbledore once said, "happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light". Yet, when the song ends, the dance ceases, and the reality hits, they must pick back up from where they left off, a perilous, dim, somber situation. It is tempting for one to dwell in this moment so much as to avoid reality like Hermione once did-"Maybe we should just stay here Harry, grow old". However, we see the characters are eventually able to gather up their emotions and move on, for the beauty of love and friendship, represented by this dance, is exactly why they are fighting. It is a moment of tangency, being where they want to but have to move away.
It's almost unbelievable how much this song fits the scene. There a train station, that place 'in-between two worlds'. King's Cross, it's a really fitting name if you think about it: "cross"...

I can see why people think this song is about the Holocaust (in spite of the fact that Gulags were a Russian thing, not a German one) but personally I feel like this song is more about regret, specifically in regards to those twilight realizations that adults have about the world they've left for their children. "We have the answer to all your fears It's short, it's simple, it's crystal clear It's round about and it's somewhere here Lost amongst our winnings" This verse feels like a callback to one of Cave's earlier songs, Time Jesum Transeuntum Et Non Riverentum, which is about a couple who seek out the meaning of life, find it, and quickly forget it after becoming enthralled by material possessions, leaving them confused and miserable at the end of their days with nothing to show for it. O Children feels like a continuation of that, with the couple realizing that they are leaving nothing but misery behind for the children they love so dearly. This can be read as a realization and condemnation of the world we have ourselves created for our children. "The cleaners have done their job on you They're hip to it, man, they're in the groove They've hosed you down, you're good as new And they're lining up to inspect you" The "Cleaners" in the song could be the system that the parents have left behind which will ultimately lead the children to the same fate as their parents. Sadly, old Jim finds the answer that they lost, perhaps their own innocence (a common theme in Nick Cave's music is the destruction of innocence), but now it's too late and there is nothing these parents can do for their children. Those condemned to the gulag wouldn't have the keys for it... those who keep the gulag do. The "Gulag" is the prison that they, the parents, have made of the world, and they're giving their children the "keys" in the hopes that they don't meet the same fate as the parents. What fate is that? It could be a loss of innocence, of love for others, or any of the terrible things that age and time tend to do to people. They want their kids to be better than they were. They're warning their kids not to be like them. They're horrified because the misery that their children will encounter will be from things that they themselves created, and they're saddened that they can't protect their children. "Hey little train! We are all jumping on The train that goes to the Kingdom We're happy, Ma, we're having fun And the train ain't even left the station" Of course, the children are children, and they're happy where they are. The outro could be the children telling their parents that everything will be alright, the future is unwritten but the present is good. The train hasn't left the station yet.
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 Your literal perspective and Dilapsor's symbolic one don't cancel each other, you know? Of course there are literal references to the nazi regime, but they can also be symbolically transposed to any form of oppression, and that include the actual life control coming through social-media and the treatment of migrants children in the US as well. Overall it just means that those symbols are coming from anti-nazi sentiments but are applicable to any oppressive society, and art welcome multiple interpretations.
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 the cleaners part is about soviet "investigantions" where they tortured people to make them believe in communism and believe that they DESERVE their punishment. This song is not about fucking German camps, but Russian ones. Stop seeing nazis everywhere. Gulag is soviet thing, not nazi.
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 these are not references to nazis at all. I am curious if you actually know anything about russian soviet camps except there was something like that. These camps were called "white crematoria". You could go to soviet camp for any stupid thing. You could have "german-sounding name". You could be late for work once. You could just say something that they would acknowlegde as "against poeple and party". They could even accuse you for nothing, they would have blamed you for something you had never done. In the lyrics there are investigations described. People were tortured during that investigations, until they started believing in their fault, as good as new. Then they were signing the doccuments admitting their fault. People were like slaves there, working till their death. Difference is, in German camps they rather aimed to eliminate people quickly. In soviet camps, they tried to do everything so that your suffering would last the longest, you worked with conditions of a slave, waiting for all this to end one day, in "the train that never left the station". Because it was false hope. In the deadline soviets were extending the sentences.
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 what is the most terrifying, people believed in their fault, and believed that their conditions are "normal". That outside the camps everything is the same. They believed that they lived in normality, reality of the world. They also believed that those who had enslaved them were good people, doing all this for them all, for their good. It was a sick world that lasted decades, not just 5 years. Amd before bolsheviks there was a similiar thing, but in tsarist era it was called "katorga".
I had no idea this was on Harry Potter. Been listening to Nick Cave since my father talked about him in a Christmas dinner... A punk lord transformed into the sound of children lifting up their voices... Time breaks
What's the difference about being here for Nick or for Harry Potter? I've discover the song because of harry potter and I really love it. The important thing is that this song brings so many different people, it is the beauty of music.
I couldn't bear that. I barely lived through the last Nick Cave and Warren Ellis concert I went to. Seriously. He's too much lol. Also, Warren gave us all covid, but that's another story...
My Oma lived in Germany during the days of WWII and I can’t hear the final paragraph without crying my eyes out. She carried so much pain and was an angel. They truly didn’t know. But it lived with them forever. And she lived the rest of her life making amends and peace…if it were ever possible for her. She’s passed now just over a year…and with 20+ great grandkids who saw her as the most angelic person on the planet, I believe she did more then what anyone thought was humanly possible
It doesn't matter that a Harry Potter film has brought so many people here, the point is that more people have found their way to this great music, that they otherwise may not have heard! Woo nick cave :-)
*_"Hey little train! We're all jumping on_* *_The train that goes to the Kingdom_* *_We're happy, Ma, we're having fun_* *_And the train ain't even left the station."_* Just a perfect choice for Harry Potter, love this song.
+Shukri Hanza It describes rounding people up and processing them for shipment to concentration camps. It speaks of the 'keys to the Gulag' and: "The cleaners have done their job on you They're hip to it, man, they're in the groove They've hosed you down, you're good as new They're lining up to inspect you" Basically, the 'train' Cave is singing about, is not a train you'd want to be on. It certainly isn't going to Hogwart's.
This has quickly become my all-time favorite song. Its slow, heavy delivery and its beautiful lyrics just make me wanna sit and think about life, the people I love, and the times I've shared with those closest to me. Music is truly magical, man.

When I first saw the film I almost exploded hearing this beautiful Nick Cave song. The deathly hallows part 1 is my favorite H. P. And this song made it even better than it already was! 💚✌
For everyone critical of the scene in which the song appears you have to remember what's going on in the wizarding world. Non magical people with connections to magical people are being rounded up like the Jewish people were during the Holocaust and having horrible things done to them, as was anyone born to someone of non magical or half magical blood. So while the danceable beat to the song sort of takes away from the somberness of it the meaning is still there in the bigger picture.
The song is not at all about people being rounded up. The fact that Nazis, like everyone else, used trains to transport things does not suffice at all. You're ignoring the obvious allusions to "Amazing Grace". The song is about the new-found faith of a new generation and the doubt that the new faith was found in time. The parents, apprised of their mistake, are aghast at themselves, while the children show a measured hope. The rest of the album on which it appears confirms this. As it pertains to the Harry Potter movie, I have no idea. It is not beyond possibility that one of the producers was as clueless of the general thrust of the song as you are.
Everybody is here either because they're Nick Cave fans, either because they're Harry Potter fans. Meanwhile I finished reading “Autre-Monde : Genèse” by Maxime Chattam and this song gives me gosebumps. Only other Pans will understand.
You hear that instrumental? Nick Cave would be nothing without him , like the scene between Harry and Hermione would be nothing without this song , i prefer guys listening to good music because of a movie or series than people listening to lame music , Harry Potter is a great book/movie and Nick Cave is great too , so why argue?
nick cave would be nothing without him... haha... you are so funny... read your stupid hp, but please, say nothing about a man you dont know anything... nick cave has more hits than hp bookpages...

Children
Rejoice, rejoice
The cleaners have done their job on you
They’re hip to it, man, they’re in the groove
They’ve hosed you down, you’re good as new
They’re lining up to inspect you
O children
Poor old Jim’s white as a ghost
He’s found the answer that was lost
We’re all weeping now, weeping because
There ain’t nothing we can do to protect you
O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
Children
Rejoice, rejoice
Hey, little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We’re happy, Ma, we’re having fun
And the train ain’t even left the station
Hey, little train! Wait for me!
I once was blind but now I see
Have you left a seat for me?
Is that such a stretch of the imagination?
Hey, little train! Wait for me!
I was held in chains but now I’m free
I’m hanging in there, don’t you see
In this process of elimination
Hey, little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We’re happy, Ma, we’re having fun
It’s beyond my wildest expectation
Hey, little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We’re happy, Ma, we’re having fun
And the train ain’t even left the station
3Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
4As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.
5Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
Sad... Beautiful lyrics
Welcome to the gulag
Thanks for the lyrics.

2020 anyone. First time I heard this was literally in 2010 when I saw Harry Potter and the deathly hallows in the cinema. I grew up reading all the books and watching all the movies. I was like 9 when I saw deathly hallows part 1 and it was the first movie that made me cry twice. I cried one time during the dance scene with Harry and hermione also this song was playing in the background. I also cried when dobby died. Harry Potter was a big part of my childhood. I’m 18 now but last decade was so good. Wish I could go back to them days and go see Harry Potter again. I’ll always be a potterhead lol
I bin a pot-ter head for years before HP lol Banging song

This music made me cry 🥺 Any 2020 potterheads???
Я плачу. Спасибо «Гарри Поттеру», после просмотра которого, я полюбила эту песню.
I can see why people think this song is about the Holocaust (in spite of the fact that Gulags were a Russian thing, not a German one) but personally I feel like this song is more about regret, specifically in regards to those twilight realizations that adults have about the world they've left for their children.
"We have the answer to all your fears
It's short, it's simple, it's crystal clear
It's round about and it's somewhere here
Lost amongst our winnings"
This verse feels like a callback to one of Cave's earlier songs, Time Jesum Transeuntum Et Non Riverentum, which is about a couple who seek out the meaning of life, find it, and quickly forget it after becoming enthralled by material possessions, leaving them confused and miserable at the end of their days with nothing to show for it. O Children feels like a continuation of that, with the couple realizing that they are leaving nothing but misery behind for the children they love so dearly. This can be read as a realization and condemnation of the world we have ourselves created for our children.
"The cleaners have done their job on you
They're hip to it, man, they're in the groove
They've hosed you down, you're good as new
And they're lining up to inspect you"
The "Cleaners" in the song could be the system that the parents have left behind which will ultimately lead the children to the same fate as their parents.
We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We're happy, Ma, we're having fun
And the train ain't even left the station"
Of course, the children are children, and they're happy where they are. The outro could be the children telling their parents that everything will be alright, the future is unwritten but the present is good. The train hasn't left the station yet.
Lol I only thought about Harry Potter
I think this is like the only song in Harry Potter movies that isn't an original score melody.

Yes!I'm from Harry Potter here,but I love this song!❤
I've had the pleasure of seeing this song performed live with the choir, it was one of the best live performances I have ever seen

Exactly my sentiment, Nick Cave isn't exactly obscure, but most people have only heard of him, not heard him.

Just a perfect choice for Harry Potter, love this song.
can you plzz tell me what the song talks about
+Shukri Hanza It describes rounding people up and processing them for shipment to concentration camps. It speaks of the 'keys to the Gulag' and:
"The cleaners have done their job on you
They're hip to it, man, they're in the groove
They've hosed you down, you're good as new
They're lining up to inspect you"
Basically, the 'train' Cave is singing about, is not a train you'd want to be on. It certainly isn't going to Hogwart's.
+Vader fathers Dumbledore I know!!! :,(
I don't think you know what the song is about...
atlas92 Yes I do, but out of context, the chorus can apply to the Hogwarts Express.

I put on my headphones and danced to this without a care in the world, just alone in my bedroom, the freest and happiest I've ever been in my life, and it just reminded me of Harry Potter, I probably wouldn't even be here without it, sometimes I wish I were a witch just doing spells with my friends and learning about potions, getting a Christmas sweater and eating bacon and eggs with the Weasleys, getting detention for sneaking out with Draco and Pansy, having lunch with the Golden Trio, reading Luna's quibblers and making earings with her, gossiping with Ginny and Moaning Myrtle, having tea with Hagrid, seeing Seamus explode something, have butterbeer with Neville, playing quidditch with Oliver, getting pranked by Peeves, George and Fred, have snowball fights with everyone and going to the yuleball. thank you :)

This...this is the best comment on the feed.
The song is literally about all the kids of the Gulag camp prisoners being slaughtered and ascending, yet I find it quite peaceful
Escutar essa música acompanhando a letra é um processo de renascimento, que música!
