brings back memories- every 3,000 miles, Saturday morning maintenance, pulling those bails down under the back of the Squareback, adjusting all to .006 (and letting number three exhaust go a tad looser on the feeler). As the great Idiot Book Writer John Muir said: "come to terms with the ass that bears you."
I don't work on cars but these videos are good for winding down at end of the day. Sarah got my attention with her beauty but I've stayed for her intelligence and humor. For some reason I want to upgrade the suspension on my car. Interesting videos Sarah, keep it up.
With these cork valve cover gaskets, its traditional to only glue the one side to the cover and leave the engine side plain. This allows reuse for a long time as your going to be checking valve lash often.
Not having touched one of these vehicles since the early '90s, it's gratifying to know you can still buy new sheet metal for these engines. With air-cooled engines the sheet metal is more important than one would think.
Doing those fine adjustments takes a talented surgeon’s touch… I have neither the skill nor patience for it. Very fun video. Great to see a Charlie cameo, as well. Thank you, Sarah. 👍👍👍
I drive 1835cc dual port engine in my 1971 VW Beetle Convertible (mine since 1976). You're missing the two small "tins" at the rear that attach under the cylinder tins. Yes, we experienced folks know to add the generator to the fan shroud and install as a unit.
Hopefully it's a more eventful giveaway Sarah! You deserve a personal recognition from your automotive peers. Don't find yourself being alone,it's a great achievement what you do. Share that give away moment with others🍻👏👏👏 Take care!
I love the old school ignition system, carburetor, and an engine without all the electronics and plumbing. Refreshing not having to be a plumber and a computer tech/electrical engineer to work on it.
I'm new to your channel but I find myself binge watching videos on the MR2 and the TT. It's obvious that your wonderful personality and the beautiful work that you do make these the best car videos I have seen.
VW doesn't recommend using a sealer on the oil pump cover. We generally check the back of the cover for flatness by rubbing the cover on a sheet of wet 1000- 1200 grit paper on a verified flat surface just to verify that the cover is flat, especially around the bolt holes. Put a little oil in that gasket and install it torqued to specs. The gasket between the pump body and the engine case is OK to use sealer on.
Great to see Charlie again and helping out too. Not sure why you are placing so much pressure on yourself with the Beetle’s completion. I certainly enjoy the rapid and slow progress stages with all your work as that is reality. Your success (my opinion) is due mostly to your delivery and not so much on huge developments; so relax a little.
Dudette!!! You have been doing AMAZING, and ROCKING this build! I CANNOT wait to drive Ragnar back to New Hampshire! Ahead of time, thank you SO much, for taking so much time with him.
soooo much work on this car, wow, your attention to the smallest of details is commendable! it's almost like you are of German heritage with the Teutonic attention to detail!
Sarah, this assembly was so much more entertaining than the ones in high school. This has been such a groovy trip back to simpler times. Charlie put another win under his belt, but who wansta count carbs? Can't wait for the unveiling of the new project!
l drove a 75' type 1 beetle from Dallas Tx to Ushuaia Argentina and back when l quit college. l drove the same bug from Dallas to the very last beach of Baja Mexico the next year and back. The car has 400+k on the original 1835cc Fuel injected motor Doug at Qualitat VW in Dallas built. Its had two new belly pans and is still a daily driver. My friend bought it and his daughter still drives it to and from college.
Hi Sarah, You are not dumb!! But there are alot of times I'll call myself a dumb ass and the older I get it seems to happen more often. Nice job Sarah!!
Sarah, the issue unfortunately with Not painting that Engine Block is that the Block is already showing signs of corroding. The heat from running the engine will accelerate that corrosion, anytime that engine is exposed to more water from the roadway, or washing the car, salt (Obviously) if it's in a Winter environment also is going to reek havoc on it. It should have been painted in a High Heat paint after it was Dry Ice blasted, or some other method to remove all the surface corrosion. The sad thing is that aluminum alloy corrodes pretty quickly once the grain of the metal has been infiltrated. I do realize however that you are in a Time Crunch with this project.
Mad skills . . Unbelievable work ethic . . Wicked sense of humor . . Absolutely best auto RUclips content !!! Keep up the amazing job . . We all appreciate it . . THANKYOU !!!!
I realize there was no provision for the flaps in that aftermarket fan shroud, but they really do help direct cooling air even if you don't use a thermostat and wire them open, along with the missing air vanes in your cylinder tins. A shroud with a venturi ring improves airflow too.
All the rookie mistakes, 009 (no vac advance) aftermarket exhaust that has non-working manifold preheat so the carb will ice the manifold and run like crap.
As simple as these Bugs are, the assembly requires a bit of patience and often a redo since there isn't much room on some areas to do anything out of order. The new tins and clean carb make it not only run better but clean up the look a bunch too!
You are totally amazing on how you work on your vehicles! You can tear down that Beetle 1600 and put everything back together, wow! Can't wait for the next Beetle assembly video. Great channel thumbs up to you Sarah!!😃🚙👍
Hi Sarah, Not be long now till Ragnar is Zipping along the streets of (Senior moment} wherever. Lucky person whoever wins it. Excellent video thanks again.
Love the pink screwdriver. It would be cool if one day you did a synopsis of your story; how you got interested in working on cars, what your career arc was, education (you mentioned a tech school) and the like. I am sure your subscribers would be interested.
My wife and I so badly want Ragnar! I’d pay for him at this point. Then I’d drive to Chirco (I’m like 10mins from it) and get the 1776cc Long Block kit. That’s still my favorite bug displacement… or the 1915. Either way, I’d call it Ragnar the space viking of freedom. You could keep the 1600 and put it in a sand rail or your go cart…?
I noticed you never put the cooling vanes back in the fan housing. You should, other wise the engine won’t last so long. It won’t warm up properly and the cylinders (jugs) will overheat and wear out quicker. They are there for this reason as it was designed. They are very important and people in warmer climates think they are not. But they wouldn’t be there if they weren’t important. They are operated by the bellows style thermostat under the right hand side of the engine. All the best.👍🏾🛠🇬🇧
When others say: "it's perfect", Sarah says: "I'll allow it". That is perfection at its best! Fantastic work.

You to Sarah 😬

Passion ,competence, humor - always enjoyable to watch
Well said! It's really a pleasure to watch a craft well executed.
SARAH!!!!!
Aw, it’s so much more fun to set the valve lash with the engine in. 😝. Looking great!
Doing valve adjustments on a Beetle: tedious. Watching beautiful Sarah-n-Tuned doing valve adjustments on a Beetle: priceless. ;)

Don’t worry about the cork gaskets- if they don’t leak oil, you are out of oil
Not only would this car be fun to own and look after, the fact that Sarah put her time, craft, and love into it would make it that much extra special!
Raining with floods and high rivers in Australia qld, nsw, vic. But Sarah is a rainbow 🌈
hahaha classic Pete ;)

@7:05 when I had my 69 bus with 1600 the book said every 6,000 miles
Pink screwdriver!! Total girl.
That oil cooler is the killer of cylinder #3.
... so much easier to adjust valves on a bench , than laying on your side in the cold , ah memories of my '69 bus ... as always nice work ! ...
“El zapito”, a wonderful occurrence of yours truly to name this project. Much love and respect!!!
You're doing an amazing job on Ragnar. Again, you showed how skilled you are Sarah.
I just get the internet back on from Hurricane Ian and your video appears. Life is good!
Hopefully it's a more eventful giveaway Sarah!

Much awaited much appreciated excellent craftsmanship as usual.
Great project 👍
Real high satisfaction value from your vids. I watch entire episodes without ffwding.
As an owner for several years of a 1967 VW beach buggy, you've gotta love these engines.Your man is one lucky fella.Good job Sarah.Subbed.
Unfortunally, RTV all the way is wrong on an VW-Engine.........still today.
Love your sense of humor

I swear I could feel the drag of the feeler gusge when you set the points- perfect 👍🔥
Sarah… You’re doing great with your honest commentary on the idiosyncrasies of an air cooled VW motor… ☮️ Guten tag 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻😎
I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've seen someone make a connection between false eyelashes and valve lash adjustment. Keep being you, Sarah!

Awesome work again!! Suggestion- electronic ignition.🤙🏼🤙🏼
You've done alot for your viewers much love Sarah
Oh OK
Actually, smart move not painting the block - the alloy block is designed to shed heat (no water) and paint holds too much heat in.
soooo much work on this car, wow, your attention to the smallest of details is commendable! it's almost like you are of German heritage with the Teutonic attention to detail!
This brought back so many memories of my 1964 bug that I had in my college days. Thanks for sharing. Nice to see the meticulous work you do.

Cleanest bug engine I’ve ever seen. 👍🏻
See, told you. You’ll get it done in time. 😉😎

Iw ish Ragnar was your car we'd get to see you work on things over time. Great little project car. You've done an excellent job all the way along.
Hi Sarah, You are not dumb!! But there are alot of times I'll call myself a dumb ass and the older I get it seems to happen more often. Nice job Sarah!!
45 seconds into this video and I already love it because Sarah be her true self smells the foam on the oil cooler LOL
Vapor Blasting works great !! That Engine block would look Brand New ( No Paint Needed )
Wish I had one

I love working on old iron!
Cool video thanks.
I had a 69 Bus, Westfalia. I liked using the go/no-go gauge for the valves to find that "feel". Remember, it's not a car, it's a Volkswagen.
10:47 Charlie doing the ta daaaa was funny
Love how Sarah shares my vehicular OCD about cleanliness! Well, as long as it's apart, might as well refurbish EVERYTHING ..
10:08 surprisingly accurate
Love it , great memories of my younger days working on my VW that I got brand new in 1972 . You have done a great job.

Nice to see the "Hoover Bit" on the oil cooler.
Very practical reassembling choice.

I’m buying another T-Shirt. I’ve lost count how many we’ve bought.
Sarah, you need to do a Sema build. I feel like your car would be better than most there.
Just let your OCD go wild and watch the rewards come
My 19 year old A1C is at Sheppard now.
Always activate bare metal with a white vinegar wipe down before applying paint .
I clicked for Sarah... I stayed for the music and the build. Coolest channel around.
Love your ability to determine the false lash. Charlie is a Saint.
Hi Charlie. Hi Sarah.
Engine looks great! I love the natural metal and black together. Simple and very clean. Wind always equals shit show!🤣
Sweet power plant.
Hi Sarah, The block (case) is made of Magnesium and none of my old air cooled buddies painted it.
I noticed you never put the cooling vanes back in the fan housing. You should, other wise the engine won’t last so long. It won’t warm up properly and the cylinders (jugs) will overheat and wear out quicker.

Wow - beautiful!
I find it joyful watching you loving Ragnar😊
i own a 68 beetle ..for the lucky winner of this beauty .. i would not upgrade it any further cuz sarah already put her heart into it
Very nicely done! A nice, fresh 1600 is a great starting point for anyone. Another price of Ragnar's puzzle! Thanks, Sarah! ✌️❤️🙂🇨🇦
YES BEETLE!!
Just found your channel, watched a few videos and sub’d. You’re skilled, funny and I’m learning detailed info on engines. Best combo ever cheers 🍻
Love the MR2
Another great video Sarah!
Cheers 👍🏴
When I was an apprentice at VW specialist spent a lot of time in the parts washer cleaning Bug tinware.
"Hi" (9:10) 🤣😂
Super to see Charlie drop by. All the best.
thank you! especially love this air cooled content!
Is it weird that I cheer yea! When I see a new video from you? You somehow manage to be entertaining, cute and awkward every time.
Yes, be precise with those valves, nothing worse than hearing a Beetle with rattley valves.
