    I live near Mount Rainier and the missing people on The Mountain have fascinated me for years. I was hiking very close to the Rampart Ridge Trail a week after Joe Wood disappeared. There was a really heavy snow pack that year and the trails near Longmire were not melted out. It was easy to lose the trail as the snow was hard and you didn't leave deep footprints. In the spring, the snow melts in a way that you can easily wander off-trail and become lost - the way the snow melts looks like footprints. Joe was hiking mid-week and in 1999 there weren't many people who hiked mid-week (I was one of them and I remember many solo hikes). The one person who came forward was likely the only hiker on the Rampart Ridge Trail that day as there were other trails in the area with better views and less snow on the ground. I've always assumed Joe got lost somewhere off-trail and, after he died, an animal dragged him further off-trail. With the dense woods in the area, he probably will never be found. It's very sad and my heart goes out to his family. Thank you for the story.

      Do you think many of the missing hikers get lost off trail then ?

  • @elanastahl1929

    The wilderness is so vast. I backpack and I have lost the trail once and it was only for a couple of minutes and it felt like eternity. It is easy to go off trail and become disoriented especially in the backcountry and in snow. I have a feeling he got off trail or fell through a crevice. I feel for his family and friends who miss him.

      If possible, always carry a map and occasionally check your location and heading (orienteering). Then, if you lose the trail, you can head in the right direction to cross it again.
      I've been a Sierra Club and FL Trails outing leader, and I admit that on my own private outings I often didn't carry a map. In hindsite, that's an essential for any hike longer than a few miles.

    • @IanP1963

      I don't think even a map in the NP's is of much use if you go off trail !!!!

  • @TS-mq1fj
    @TS-mq1fj 6 лет назад +17

    Couple of points to make , once anyone leaves the trail in these type of forest and topography the odds of being found drops by half or better. The odds of falling or having a injury increases exponentially . In SAR we’ve found bodies that were less than 50yds off trail who died from exsposure leaving no signs they were there huddled under a deadfall and only found by cadaver dog.
    The Wilderness is a Wild unforgiving element that doesn’t distinguish between man or beast. Most missing people didn’t befall a ominous force but simply made a choice or had a circumstance that resulted in the loss of their lives.

    The fact he was a Yale graduate, publishing a book and was obviously an intellectual of sorts, ties in to one of the commonalities DPaulides refers to often in his cases; the fact that people with high IQs are frequently in the “disappear with out a trace” group.

    • @DavidPortera
      @DavidPortera 6 лет назад +8

      In addendum to my previous comment, do you know what time he went missing Rusty?
      DPaulides mentions late afternoon is a common overlap in these cases.

      Educational practice at an institution doesn't have anything to do with intelligence when you aren't smart enough to take care of yourself in the woods requiring self awareness and common sense

      Binoculars and a book are not the main priorities to be packing for a light hike

      1976 bronx he was an eagle scout. He had more than enough outdoor knowledge, aside from his academic intellect. His brain was packing.
      No amount of indoor/outdoor knowledge, or physical resources will get you out of some of the occurrences that take place in the woods. Especially when your original intent was just to aim for a simple afternoon hike.

    • @DavidPortera
      @DavidPortera 6 лет назад +13

      1976Bronx- DPaulides, in his Missing 411 book series, points out that IQ is one of the common factors in these seemingly random disappearances. Though your opinion holds truth in other circles, I find it’s expression here misplaced. The reason for that opinion is, in your comment’s misplacement you’ve also represented an unknowing and disregard of the DPaulides studies, where this victim’s background appears to meet one of the crucial components that lead to a disappearance.

    I live near Mt Rainer and grew up here. People do go missing frequently there. Some are found some are not. It is very easy for an inexperienced hiker to get turned around and wonder off the wrong way. There is also many areas when snow melt happens that are unstable. It is very likely he fell off the snow bridge. Or he may have seen a sight that was off trail and went to go look for it and got turned around and got lost. It’s sad but it happens every year up there.

      Yea the wilderness areas of Washington are very dangerous for a number of reasons, more dangerous than most wilderness areas in the US. But people still want to credit bigfoot with these disappearances. If you are aware of what the terrain is like it's not that big of a mystery why people go missing and are never found

    • @jackssmirkingrevenge9365
      @jackssmirkingrevenge9365 5 лет назад +9

      ostensibly, your statement is accurate. but most of us here are hardcore followers of the particular branch of disappearances that share a bizarre profile set which david paulides made famous with his missing 411 books.
      you need to dedicate a few dozen hours to researching this particular dataset through rusty and david's videos/interviews to truly understand why your explanation is untenable and why this is perhaps the greatest mystery of modern times. i have studied hundreds of these particular cases and believe me, it is not animal predation, serial killers or a mere case of hikers getting turned around - the answer is far more disturbing and incomprehensible than anything someone using traditional search and rescue logic could possibly proffer. its extremely unusual in that the people who know most about this subject genuinely have the least answers - truly, it is the most baffling and genuinely disturbing of mysteries

      @IanP1963 5 лет назад +2

      So what is your take then ? The Paranormal ? Roughnecks out of control ? Sasquatch ? Gov't operating scientific studies in the NP's away from civiliazation ? The Wilderness itself having a life of its own ? You talk like you've given it some thought. A friend of mine's son went missing in a Canadian NP a few years ago now, they eventually found his body, so they've had some closure.....

    • @jackssmirkingrevenge9365
      @jackssmirkingrevenge9365 5 лет назад +6

      thats the thing, ian - i have no real theory. its one of those odd things where the more you research it the less it makes sense - somewhat like the ufo phenomenon, and - as you mentioned - sasquatch
      some people would like you to believe the relatively simple explanation that there is a giant bipedal ape walking around undiscovered in the pacific northwest of america.. but that just isnt viable. evidence such as bones or teeth would have been found by now. but it is also inconceivable to me that every single person and culture who has reported a sighting over hundreds of years is lying or mistaken. also, the more you look into it, the more bizarre aspects you find. such as sasquatch appearances alongside ufo's, sasquatches disappearing into thin air, apparent invulnerability to bullets etc etc. its not a phenomenon with a clean cut explanation
      similarly with these disappearances, once youve looked at a few hundred cases of the specific profile involved - it renders all other rational explanations moot
      if i had to hazard a guess, i would imagine things like ufo's, sasquatch and this phenomenon are all in some way linked together. possibly as some ancient yet immaterial consciousness, or rather catalyst to the evolution of human consciousness - which is intrinsically indigenous to earth and has been around us for aeons, merely shifting form to appear as perceivable by the time frame it is encountered in. the similarities for example - between the faerie and modern alien phenomenon - are quite striking. on top of that, things like sasquatch have been around in europe for time immemorial - it just went by different names such as 'wildman' and 'woodwose'
      i dont pretend to know whats happening vis a vis the missing 411 subject, but like the examples above - i do think it will turn out to be infinitely more complex and involved than anything that instantly jumps to mind

Ok I'm going to put it to you but isn't it weird that all these people just vanish and yes some are found safe some bodies are discovered yet a lot of people just vanish without a trace.You may think I'm way off or a nut but I really believe there's something supernatural going on here .You know native Americans spoke of these places as doorways to another realm and of strange creatures appearing out of nowhere. Most people will dismiss these tales as just myth and legends but one must also consider that there's some basis and fact to these tales..Other dimensions leylines whatever.Im no expert believe me but it's fucking weird man..This world really is a strange place and I for one will not be venturing into the wilderness even as beautiful it looks..Sorry to vent but I did like your comment..Stay Blessed.

    Since there was no physical evidence found on the mountain, could it be that he met with 'foul play' elsewhere, and his car was dumped at the Park to make it appear as though he had gone missing while hiking? In many of these cases where the vehicle is found in the Park with no physical evidence of the hiker, I wonder if criminals are dumping the vehicles at the Parks to throw investigators off the truth.

    The fact that the majority of people go missing in or around parks may be the one common thread that these share as a fact, the rest is almost always mere speculation of circumstance(s).... I have hiked alone or with a dog in many remote mountainous areas all through my life and while I won't say that I didn't experience some strange circumstances, none of my hikes were in or around any form of park, just Nat'l Forest. I still hike in areas alone that are completely remote, but I also make certain that I am well armed and provisioned with what I need if something goes wrong. As a hunter, I have conducted many, many hours of predator calling out there as well and a few times, "something" came in but not close enough to identify. Bears come in a sneaky fashion and cougars are so quiet and skilled at stalking, you have to be sure to put the ground layout in your favor to have less area to watch and to keep your back protected. I have rarely shot anything that I have called in, preferring to get a good look rather than take game... I have been stalked by unknown animals on a few occasions, once for about 3/4 of a mile and whatever that was, it didn't "follow" me, it stayed parallel to me as I went. Always on the up-hill side. And in considering these events, whatever "it" was, it would always be to my right never to my left.
    One of the comments below stated that one should never go hiking alone... I think that that depends on how well you know the country and how experienced you are. I will never stop hiking the back country of the NW! Now, I have a very well backgrounded German Shepherd pup to train and be my partner out there and I will say this concerning another comment that I read below; If you get the feeling that you should leave the area, LEAVE! I concur with that train of thinking and have been turned back when my gut instincts were telling me to or re-routed my path in a different direction. You never know.....
    Rusty, I always enjoy these videos. You do an excellent job of bringing these to us, Thank you.

    My friend lost his glasses once while hiking, they caught a tree branch and flung off his face. We heard them hit the ground near us but could not find them. It was just a field with some tall grass and scrub trees and we couldn't find his the glasses for 2 days. We only had about 100 square feet to search. Its easy to lose things in the wilderness, something could be right under your nose and you could miss it. Any hunter that's has searched for an animal that ran knows what I'm talking about. Most commenters are too inexperienced in the woods to understand.

    I have a hypothesis that may help in some of these cases. What about bee's and other stinging insects? I was hiking with a friend on a trail next to a waterfall in North Carolina when I was young. We hiked a couple of miles up the trail. To keep proceeding up the trail we had to climb a rock to get to the next section of the trail that would lead to the top of the waterfall. I went first and grabbed the side of the rock and started climbing up when BAM a swarm of bee's attacked me! Their nest was in the rock and I disturbed them. Never in my life have I seen so many bee's! They were biting me everywhere as I ran down the trail ripping whatever clothing I had from my body off in the process. Remind you, if this has ever happened to you a person does not think rationally. After running for what seemed like an eternity we got away from the swarm. At this time I was stung all over and I only had on my boxer shorts and shoes. My friend got stung several times also but he told me he saw everything as it happened. We got back to camp an my friends father was an emergency room doctor and got aid for me. I think being young and having my adrenaline pump is what saved me. I did have a fever that night and the amount of bites were astonishing. Sometimes the smallest things can kill a human being. I was lucky that day. Thank you folks. Take care and stay safe!

    Think about it... What better place for "something" to abduct someone, most of the time without a trace leaving most people to assume that the person died from the elements of nature? What would make the government / park authorities to turn a blind eye in such a short amount of time after the person has disappeared? I know it's hard to actually really believe but if you really done you're research on these tragic cases one has to really ask themselves "who?" "why & how?" I'm new to this channel but I subscribed, great work my friend. Have you ever heard of Travis Walton? Did you know that his disappearance took place in a national park as well & he was found in a town about several miles away five days later? Now I believe some of these cases do involve people getting lost & such but some of these incidents I believe ET's are involved & some from within our government know whats going on but can do nothing about it....

    Yet another where did the hiker go granted a decent amount of time did pass before a search got underway. Was it the people who live inside the mountains? Did the earth or rock just open up and swallow him, or did a door to another dimension silently open and then close behind him? The ones that get to me are when the rescue folks are in phone contact with a person and still can't find them. Only a couple I've heard of. That has to unerving for searh personel. I know one rule I've always followed when out hiking is if you get the feeling things don't feel right do a 180 and head back the way you came as quickly as possible. And whatever you do try and not go on long hikes in the deep wilderness alone without a transponder or sat phone and some kind of protection. Damn nature you scary!

    I hiked way out on a ridge while hunting one year. The ridge kept branching out to where I realized that I was about 2 miles from where I was supposed to be. Had over foot of snow on ground and I started following my tracks back to where I came from when there was a white out of snow blizzard that in few minutes covered most of my tracks. What really freaked me out was that in the footsteps of my tracks there were bear tracks that had followed me. Oh crap! With my tracks fading away I felt a little helpless. Scary.

    Saw your "Case Study 4" of George Penca and liked it. I like case studies that are analytical. Host steps back, impartial and gives many scenarios. Not trying to promote one scenario, but gives cold hard facts, maps, etc. Gives opportunity for arm chair detectives to try to find solution. If one arm chair solves it - worth it. If a loved one of mine mysteriously disappeared or died, I'd be open and grateful if arm chairs given opportunity to solve. They may solve mystery. Subscribed.

    Rusty West you have the best stories and I like the fact that you choose which ones sound the most credible. I listened to your interview about your own experience in the forest and how everything became oddly silent. Other credible sources have stated the same. I used to think that Bigfoot etc was silly. I’m a believer in things now that didn’t used to make sense at all. One search and rescue team found a kid in a tree they couldn’t possibly have climbed up. Mountain lion could’ve done it or even a bear but why would they kill a kid up in the tree instead of on the ground?

      Don't be ridiculous. The guy had a newly discovered heart condition, went on a taxing hike, and died. Animals can consume and disperse an entire body (even elk sized bodies) completely within 2 days. Zero mystery. Just like all the other National Park disappearances. They're just very very boring (though sad and pointless) cases of humans making mistakes, and nature taking care of their carcasses. Hypothermia alone, is probably responsible for 90% of them. These peddlers of "mystery" are simply cashing in on the gullibility of people who need drama.

    Great work on reporting these mysterious missing person cases. Pertaining to this case, I can't understand why anyone with a known heart condition, especially when his health condition was recently discovered........would take such a long trip, and a long hike into such a wilderness area all by himself. That's not even a wise thing to do for anyone WITHOUT any health problems. I certainly wouldn't want to take such a trip and hike all by myself. There's simply too many things that could possibly go wrong, and being all alone is going to make a bad thing much worse. Thanks for sharing this story.

    I have heard many of these disappearances in the Park type area's.... But it does make me wonder if maybe the Hikers could have fallen, and been dragged off by a wild animal who would instinctively carry them into a cave if one is nearby, and some of these caves are pretty big. Animals don't like to share their food much, unless its with their own groups.... I never hear about any caves being expolored for these purposes... and because so many of them seem to happen near or on Hillsides and mountains there would probably be many caves in the area.

    I’m finding it odd that so many of theses cases feature photos of the missing hiker in hiking clothing, often with gear like binoculars, backpacks, etc. outside as if they were on a hike. How many actually have pictures like this as well as being of the unfortunate minority of hikers who go lost? Unlikely hood on top of unlikely hood.
