What happened to the third syllable in the following words? Caramel (car-mel), separate (sep-rate), different (dif-rent), chocolate
(choc-late), camera (cam-ra). Did they fall victim to a terrible disease called schwa syncope (or schwa deletion)? Actually, it’s not so terrible as it happens in lots of languages. A schwa syllable following the syllable that bears the main stress says, “well I’m not
really needed here anyway” and skips town: b/ə/bye! . ;-)
Some languages are syllable-timed, like French or Spanish, where each syllable is roughly the same length, giving the impression of a steady “machine-gun” rhythm. English is a stress-timed language (!) meaning that the rhythmic impression is based on the regular timing of Stress Peaks, not syllables!
[A parenthesis here to say why I struggled a bit and why Francophones may struggle in English poetry where in fact, 'stress' in a verse is more important than the number of syllables like in French poetry where the number of syllables is crucial in an alexandrine for example]
If you want to speed up in French or Spanish, what do you do? ...You shorten the length of all the syllables.
If you want to speed up in English, you close the distance between stressed syllables. How?... By greatly reducing the unstressed syllables! And: What vowel do unstressed syllables tend to get?... Answer: Schwa !!
Here’s an excellent explanation of stress-timing with some examples by the amazing Rachel's English.

Schwa is somehow the laziest sound there is: it demands the least of speakers; The schwa just is, serene and undemanding. The vibration of air through the body to the outside world. Basically, the Essence of speech itself! ...
I like how theres a picture of a dutch library. Its located at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam which is one of the most well known museums of the Netherlands, ive have visited it a few weeks ago and the library was beautiful!🙌🏼
As a Kiwi New Zealander, it’s so much easier for me to imitate an RP accent or Queens English accent. It might be because our accent sounds has been heavily influenced from RP. I can’t do any of the other British accents though and find them very brash.
Thats because all the former colonies got given that accent, Australia, new Zealand and south Africa are all built off of rp/cockney vowels, and when spoken correctly will say "GOe" or "NOe" and not "GOw" or "NOw"

Every lesson of yours has an edge on the previous ones although they're all in different league. It says a lot for your devotion and one-off approach which is beyond belief.

Words with vowel+r in the end sound more like with “ahh” ending, for example wot-ahh doc-tahh teach-ahh etc
This is how I aspire to speak English ...despite growing up bilingual I don't speak with a good accent .....
Awesome ❤🌹🙏.
so basically just make yourself sound super posh and you will get it
~~~~ De toutes fleurs ~~~~
You poured at my feet more kingdoms one have seen
Could one see you without thinking as I do that,
In some obscurity fate had given you life,
The world gazing at you would have known of its Queen?
Et plût-il au ciel que, sans blesser ta grandeur,
Rivale plus puissante voulût tenter mon coeur,
Plus d'empires que toi, elle dût mettre à mes pieds
Et de sceptres sans nombre, ma flamme elle dût payer !
De toutes fleurs, des roses, de toutes orchidées
De toutes les merveilles, de toutes les beautés
Toutes curiosités de l'immense univers,
Huit milliards de visages qui peuplent cette terre,
Tu as soustrait mon coeur et capturé mon âme;
Que pour toi je n'ai d'yeux ! Et pour toi toutes flammes !
Que j'aime ces accents au doux son de ton chant!
Mon âme meurt au 'schwa' de ton sourire charmant;
Ô t'eussé-je connu, ma douce et tendre aimée,
J'eusse été, sans le doute, sur-le-champ foudroyé
Quels charmes fallait-il que tu m'eusses jeté
Que mon coeur et mon âme s'en vissent ainsi troublés
Et par quelle injustice ne te connus-je point?
Fallait-il qu' à jamais tu demeurasses au loin?
Fallait-il ma Sabrah, par cet amour blessé,
Que je mourusse aux bords où je me vis laissé !...
It is ironically funny when in fact most British people almost always drop the Ts and only about 3 % of them speak like this lady in the video which is call received pronunciation, Queen’s English or BBC English.
Majority of Americans also drop Ts except they can' tell even when people on the innernet tell them they drop them just as bad.
Wonderful Sabe! 👌
I would have a question for you:
Do the American various media sources if you watch some (news, films, series, music etc.) have an influence on your way of speaking/accent sometimes and on certain words maybe (and therefore on your 'schwa')? ... or not at all ...
I ask that because, for me, and though I'm aware that our situations are very different ;-), I noticed that watching quite a lot of American media (especially MrBallen that I binge-watched), I tend to hear more and more the English language in my head with the American accent (I think a lot in English as I have immersed myself in the language for quite a while). Recording myself speaking, I remarked that my schwa tends to somehow disappear a bit in favour of the 'd' sound instead of 't' sound like in 'butter' for example or in favour of more rhotic 'r' instead of the schwa sound /ə/ for some words.
In fact my English tends, a bit to my despair I confess, to be more and more a blend between British and American accent! British, that I learnt, and American to which I am more exposed to. What do you think of it? ...
Merci Sabrah, je t'💗Bisous!
Yes, you are absolutely correct. Also keeping your mouth closed most of the times when you are speaking.
how tf do you speak with your mouth closed
@@twig7198 Of course speaking requires the opening of the mouth to articulate certain sounds. What I am saying If you pay close attention, a lot of Brits barely open their mouths to pronounce vowel laced words. I am bored exercising my gorgeous ass; therefore, I have decided to respond to your comment.
@@marvelouss719 yeah ik im british and my brother barely opens his mouth when he speaks so i have to tell him to open his mouth more when he speaks but hes the only example i can think of, everyone else speaks normally
@@twig7198 Yes, give the vowels some air. Lol!
@@marvelouss719 yh exactly and he gets mad at me when i cant hear him lmao
Is it possible to gain a British accent if I continue practicing everyday? Cheers mate!
@@dumbelbells1389you don't naturally get an accent from birth. You're simply brought up with one that after say the first 10 years probably stays relatively permanent unless you move to a different or region
No.
Actors can pull off convincing accents
Oh you gotta cool and a mellifluous British accent.. Wish I had had your voice and accent which I would have been immensely proud of...
Just tad sad though that you are only able to see my message writing but never had heard my voice once and I wished you had had 🤩🤩💐👍
The English as she is spoke in Southern England but not in Scotland or other parts of Great Britain
Yes that is why it says ‘modern rp’ in the title of the video.
I m india but accent like brittish
The English accent, on the whole, pronounces R after vowels when they're followed by a vowel. Eg "There is...". Britain is made up of four countries which all have regional accents too so there's no such thing as one British accent.
even ur "r" alone doesnt sound like an r lmao
You slow? She literally said its NON RHOTIC 😂
great now i can challenge people on the street to give me 100 pounds or say the "r" 😍
British English? Scots pronounce the r. Are we not British???
It does say ‘modern rp’ in the title. It is just one of the many British accents.
