I like to think that line from Bea is deep, even though it probably isn’t...
It is deep if you think about it. Bea kinda had to grow up, take care of business and her dad while Mae didn't have that kind of responsibilties and therefore didn't need to change
(I mainly put that it probably wasn’t to not seem so “cliche”) I definitely think so, it really does make you feel for Bea...
Its a whole thing, about how things change in life. Greg moving to Bright Harbor, getting a tattoo. People and things change, Our world dosnt stay in a static position. Mea went to college and didnt really grow up, whilst all of her friends had to if they wanted to survive. If you think about this its very deep.

I was playing through here when Mae is drunk talking to Gregg and Angus, she mentions her dad used to drink but had to stop because he was a danger to his family, and had to be taken by police several times
Made me feel really sad seeing how nice he normally is.
this explains a little the dialogues of the Mae drunk, must have inherited from her father

IF ANYONE'S CURIOUS, HERE IS WHAT MAE DID AND WHY SHE'S KNOWN AS 'KILLER':
Mae gained notoriety among the townsfolk after being involved in a violent episode at her school's softball match. Six years prior to the events of Night in the Woods, Mae experienced a sudden form of dissociation from the real world - which seemed like an acute episode of derealization. She saw objects and people as just meaningless shapes, and not really existing. She felt a deep sadness for everything around her, lamenting that nothing was there for her anymore and that everything was just "stuff in the universe."
The next day at the softball match, a second episode occurred, something "broke inside her" and before she knew it, she was beating Andy Cullen's head in with a bat in front of the entire school.
Following that, most parents told their children to stay away from Mae. By the events of Night in the Woods, most of the kids in town know Mae through the attack, nicknaming her "Killer". The incident put a strain on Mae's relationship with her family. Financially, the Borowski's went deep into debt trying to treat her.
Mae was sent to Dr. Hank for treatment, where he prescribed keeping a journal as a means of keeping her emotions in check. Mae claims it helps her feel grounded with reality and that it works somewhat. She seemed to be doing alright until she left for college.
There, the effects of dissociation seemed to intensify and Mae never made a single friend at college because she was terrified of leaving her room. She was left starving or else downing entire pizzas in one go. She drank cough syrup just to sleep and forget about her living nightmare. Mae was especially terrified of the rusty statue of the founder outside her window: always a mess of shapes watching and pointing down at her. She felt too scared to phone anyone for help.
After three semesters, Mae finally mustered up the courage to leave and return to the safety of home, where things weren't just "dead shapes."
I was just about to go back to the first episode to read this so thanks. I have 2 questions.
(1)When she carries the baseball bat in her dreams is that a reference to her beating up Andy Cullen
(2) what, and when, (as in how far apart from each other and compared to when night in the woods takes place), were the two violent episodes. I don’t really understand it

@@deeformed2475 1) I think so? It's in reference to the violent episode but it's super confusing on purpose, as a reference to the dissociation
2) The softball one happened 6 years before NITW, and NITW starts right as she gets home from college. There was only 1 violent episode, but 2 dissociation episodes. She spent 3 semesters at college, and a semester is 6 months, so she spent a year and a half at college, meaning that the timeline goes:
6 years ago - Mae has her violent episode
4 1/2 years ago - she left for college
The whole time she's at college (1 1/2 years) - she's having a constant episode, and she's so scared that it might become violent she never left her room, which is why she kept either starving or eating whole pizzas, and downing cough syrup to just fall asleep, and she's terrified of the headmaster's statue right outside her window, which has morphed into just shapes and colors
Present - She's finally home after 1 1/2 years away at college, and the events of the game start right as you step off of the train.

In the first dream, it’s finally occurred to me that it takes place in the town Mae went to college to. At 35:20, you see the pointing statute Mae mentioned at the party, and I think the dream is a metaphor for wishing she hadn’t gone to college. (People have probably already noticed this though, hehe!)
Also what you're supposed to spell out with the lights(of durkilleburg) is killer. And when she talks about the statue always pointing at her, she destroys the whole thing in the "dream"
This is the third time watching this series and I didn't even realize that Durkillesburg was supposed to be the college town, or that the statue you destroy was supposed to be the one she mentioned. Wow.

The scene where Mae was smashing everything was a flashback I think, because when she was drunk she was talking about a 'statue that pointed at her' at her campus and that statue that she smashed up looked the same.
So I think that's how she got kicked out of college because she wrecked everything, but she just tells everyone she 'dropped out' so that she doesn't look bad or get more hate or something

I never got into this series when it came out, and I’m kind of sad I didn’t. I remember seeing fan art of Mae and reaallly loved the design. I didn’t know what Mae was from and I thought it was from Camp Camp (another series I hardly know anything about)

For anyone that thinks Gregg is female just because Mae calls him girl or because Steve called him and Mae ladies, people sometimes call people stuff like "girl" "dude" or "lady" even if it doesn't fit with their gender. Jack even does it in all his videos! When he says "top of the mornin' to ya laddies!" he's addressing us as laddies which is a word used for males. He knows plenty of people who aren't male watch his videos, that's just what he calls us. Felix does the same when he addresses his audience as bros. I call my friends dude or bro all the time regardless of gender, it's just a nickname of sorts. It's totally fine to use those kinds of things as a nickname with people unless they specifically ask you not to because it makes them uncomfortable, but it's just a harmless nickname for the most part. If you're still not convinced that Gregg isn't a girl the makers of the game have actually confirmed that Gregg is a guy and that he and Angus are in a gay relationship.

Being back here in 2022 after watching this in 2017 back then really hits different. It feels like nothing has changed at all and yet everything is completely different. Night In The Woods has been my top comfort game ever since i discovered it through this letsplay, never fails to get me all nostalgic and whimsical.

I love how this game shows what a legit relationship with your parents looks like. A lot of the time, games or shows will show kids (no matter their age) act so distant from their parents, all angsty and stuff, without showing that even though you never tell them EVERYTHING, most of the time you still hold normal and even fun conversations with them. You still find comfort in chatting with your mom, no matter how old you are. Because it's your mom. (Coincidentally, I'm writing this comment around Mother's Day xD)

I love this game, but for those who haven't played it themselves, yes, Gregg and Angus are confirmed to be dating throughout, and depending on what interactions you choose, Gregg also talks to Mae about how hard it is being the only queer people in town at one point, and then it's confirmed that Mae is pan. Maybe some of these commenters just aren't used to sexuality only being ONE part of a character.

I know I’m late to the party, and this is probably cheesy as hell, but I’m gonna be honest;
These videos changed my life.
I know that it’s just a guy playing video games, but it feels like so much more than that.
When I first found this series, I was in a less than ideal place, feeling ignored and unimportant, and feeling like I didn’t matter. I wasn’t mentally healthy, and I was heading down a dark path. But watching your cheery reactions to the dialogue, the unique and creative voices you do, the story of the actual game itself, it had a whole new meaning for me. I felt happy, and I laughed for the first time in a while. I guess what I’m trying to say is, thank you for being you, and keep doing everything you’re doing. 👍

I may or may not have freaked out hearing that, since I’m a really damn big Off fan.
I think Mae suffers from split personality disorder meaning that she has another personality inside her which she calls nightmare eyes,which explains the journal, the dream she gets and she sudden out durst of anger
She might have moved out away from collage because of what her second personality did which comes back to the dream she gets, so technically durning the dream you are playing as her evil counterpart which she calls nightmare eyes, which is probably why she denies any sort of activity cause by nightmare eyes
The journal is all the things that helps her calm down, she probably had one when nightmare eyes was around and was shown loud and clear, if we look though that then we might find some things that Nightmare eyes did a while ago
The dream is her guilt that she could not control so it comes back to remind her that she will be better off in a different environment which leads back to her moving away for collage, and it's also her fear, her fear that nightmare eyes might come back and she will be negligent and alone again focusing her out of her own home where she has grown up her all life

Her drunken rant tells us why she left college - she felt ostracized, like she didn't belong. Everyone else at her school was affluent or good-looking or had some other reason to think they were better than her, while she came from a pretty low-class family. At school she would do nothing but "sleep and cry alone", she felt like even the founder's statue was judging her. She was just miserable, and now she feels like she "can't go anywhere else" but Possum Springs, like it's the only place that isn't too good for her. It took me a few listens to put it all together, but no, a split personality isn't why she left college. I'm not saying she doesn't have one, just that that's not the answer to all the questions. A split personality is an interesting theory in and of itself.
It's DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder), psychologists try to avoid "split/multiple personality disorder"
But considering DID get triggered by trauma, you might be onto something. If Mae did kill someone, she may have developed DID to cope with her guilt
