*GOOOOOO* (Intense Moshing starts) One of the most important Metal bands of the last 20-30 years. The Gothenburg scene ain’t a thing without them and also you don’t get Metalcore without Slaughter of the Soul. 🐐: Slaughter of the Soul S: The Red in the Sky is Ours A: Terminal Spirit Disease, The Nightmare of Being B: With Fear I kiss the burning Darkness C: At War with Reality D: To Drink from the Night itself
Slaughter Of The Soul, At War With Reality, and The Nightmare of Being are the only ones I listen to anymore. I love all 3 of those records. I think At War With Reality is highly underrated.... I mean... The Night Eternal...come on... that is one huge epic masterpiece of a song... and the video for it is just as good!
At The Gates is a weird band for me to analyze, because while I LOVE them instrumentally, Tomas Lindberg's voice for me has just gotten worse and worse in the albums from SOTS onwards. He just sounds more hoarse and out of breath the older he gets and he just doesn't do anything for me. My favourite album of theirs is The Red in the Sky is Ours because of the guitar tone that leans more towards death metal than it does anything resembling the semi-mainstream stuff people tend to think of as melodic death metal. More like Intestine Baalism and less like In Flames, if you know what I mean. However, I DO like the risks they took with their 2021 album. Actually reminded me quite a bit of the debut.

Ordered CDs👍🖤
Just saw At the Gates last night perform Slaughter of the Soul in Las Vegas. They absolutely killed it! Great sound, killer energy, and swimming pool mosh pits!
I love At the Gates, one of the best in melodic death metal and they have a fairly consistent discography. Here would be my rating of each ATG album: The Red in the Sky Is Ours: 7/10 With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness: 7.5/10 Terminal Spirit Disease: 8.5/10 Slaughter of the Soul: 9/10 At War with Reality: 7.5/10 To Drink from the Night Itself: 8/10 The Nightmare of Being: 8.5/10

Slaughter of the Soul is of course one of the best metal albums ever made. Terminal Spirit Disease is excellent too. Can't get into the recent ones though, hopefully they are growers but I go back to them every so often and then haven't gotten me yet.
Great band actually. I love Slaughter of the Soul. There is nothing to skip here, nothing! "The Flames of the End" is actually a great way to end the album, as an instrumental. It is also quite varied as "Cold" doesn't sound the same as "Under a Serpent Sun" and that is what makes it great. Timeless \m/ \m/
i think a kiss discography rank/review would be cool, they had so many different syles and genres in their career and i think it would make for a great video (it would be very long tho lol)
Great video dude! I'm re-downloading a few At The Gates albums, because your enthusiasm is infectious. Just your bringing up key moments had me fist-pumping. Curious, what are your thoughts on Katatonia? It'd be a huge undertaking, but a runthrough of their albums would be really cool. Maybe with a Gothy friend? Anyways, cheers!
I know it will be sacrilegious to some, but I actually prefer At War With Reality over Slaughter Of The Soul! I love At The Gates tho, easily one of the best melodic DM bands ever!
@@robertsparling917 Don't quote me (as I'm not an ATG fan), but he does sound pretty good on the first album, which is my personal favourite for being more DEATH METAL than MELODIC, if you know what I mean, and therefore way more INTERESTING to my ears.
In a massive carcass fan, so by extension I feel like I’m almost required to love ATG, but I really don’t care all that much for the non slaughter of the soul albums. For whatever reason they just don’t click with me.
SO wait ... if Terminal Spirit Disease had been an EP, would you have covered it in this video? I often end up skipping EPs when checking out a discography for the first time, but thinking about it now, so many heavy bands have EPs that are important to their development or even the development of their particular niche. Even this band has the Gardens of Grief EP to start with, which I'd say is a pretty important release for them. Speaking of the early stuff though -- I feel it's been a bit misunderstood, although I'm glad you give it more praise than some. The production may be primitive, but the music? The music is more complex and intricate than much of what would come later -- maybe even a bit too much so at times. I've always been sort of middle of the road with this band although I can appreciate them and respect what they've done -- but both the Red in the Sky side and the Slaughter side have their strengths and weaknesses, I think. the Slaughter side is better executed (experience will do that) but it's maybe a bit too straightforward at times, whereas Red is (and the band even said this) their attempt to be the death meatl King Crimson, and maybe because they were young and inexperienced, sometiems it just sounds a bit unfocused (that violin is also horribly out of tune!). Glad to hear they seem to have gotten some of that particular progressive influence back -- must check out the latest record. The "sophomore slump" you alluded to is probably due to the departure of Alf Svenson, who was the major songwriting force in the very early material. He also went off to more weird and progressive pastures in Oxiplegatz before seemingly disappearing from music entirely. There are people in the scene who only really appreciate the Alf era of At teh Gates, and they're not necessarily doing so because it's "primitive death metal". Great video, man.
At the Gates is the only Melodeath you need. Newer bands just sound like heavy metal or power metal with harsh vocals. Keep the Death Metal in Melodic Death Metal
My entry to the band was their cover of Captor of Sin from Slayer... it is one of the most savage song in the metal scene, instant fan! In my humble opinion Slaughter of the Soul is a bit overrated. I only recently just listened to their whole discography and I knew that was considered their masterpiece and still is by many, heck I’ll even concede that it’s their best from their pre-breakup era but idk the newer stuff kicks way more ass in my opinion than anything they did back then. Maybe it’s cus I don’t have that nostalgia factor towards that album but idk maybe it’s just the production compared to the newer stuff.
