I can't believe how many chancellors changed before him

H
Otto Von Bismarck was the best on this list. He knew two things: War and politics. And he was good at both!
False, it was that Austrian painter dude!
i mea he was good at war politics and diplomacy but he was a conservative who was very bad domestically .
No no. It's the Austrian guy
He is so overrated ... He alienated the catholics, without any evidence. His foreign policy was also bad. There was no way russia and austria would stay on the same team. he wanted to isolate france instead of befriend them....
His social policys were good, but he only did them to appease the socialists
C'mon people in the replies let's not talk about _that guy_ for once
Funfact: There was an assassination attempt on Bismarck. Bismarck survived, despite being shot three times (two bullets deflected by his ribs).
I wonder how he felt those 2 shots...

Bismarck unified us, gave us many great reforms and refused the idea of colonies. He was more of a father to Germany than any Kaiser had been
In the beginning, he refused colonies. But then, from 1878 till 1884 he changed his opinion (maybe because of corruption or something, because he did it for companies) and started the 3rd biggest colonial empire of that time.
@@devolthor7611 From what I read, it was mostly the colonial associations that pressured Bismarck, pushing him to a pragmatic approach to eventually colonize. I doubt he ever changed his mind personally on how much of a good idea colonies were, though I could be wrong
His only flaw is he didn’t prepare Germany to be without him
@@EndoClaw True, his diplomatic expertise was rare and desperately needed. I wonder if the Reich had given Austria-Hungary the carte blanche for Serbia under Bismarck as well
@@sarmin8008 i think under bismarck Germany would have kept its alliance with Russia and stayed on good terms with Britain so a world war would have come later. The carte Blanche wouldn’t be needed then as Russia wouldn’t join anyways

A small mistake: From 1867 to 1871 von Bismarck was not chancellor of whole Germany, Bayern , Württemberg and Baden did not belong to North German Federation.
That's not a mistake. That's correct. The German state was founded in 1867 and later it's territory was extended south. 😉
@@peterg.8941 The Empire started in 1971.
@@Nikioko definitely not 😅. "The Empire" started in 1871 but the state was founded earlier.
@@peterg.8941 The North German Confederation was a proto-state. It was the German Confederation after they kicked out Austria in 1966, thus making Prussia the supreme power (after the annexation of Hannover).
@@Nikioko Austria was kicked out the German Confederation in 1866. But the North German Confederation was not just a confederation, in fact it was a normal country. In 1870 its territory was extended and a new constitution came in power and one year later a another constitution came in power. If you ask when Germany was founded than the date is clearly the 1st of July 1867. 😉
Have a nice day.

Everybody is talking about a failed Austrian painter rather than the fact that Germany had consecutive Chancellors called Helmut
I wonder how the two Helmuts got on head-to-head in the polls...
Both were immensely popular. In the end, Helmut Schmidt (the first one) only lost to Helmut Kohl because his own coalition partner (the Libertarian FDP) betrayed him.
These days though nearly all Germans view Helmut Schmidt as one of, if not the best chancellor in German history and see Kohl as an average guy. Schmidt was very charming, charismatic, quick to react and always knew a solution.
Here‘s a nice clip showing his more charming side:
ruclips.net/video/d-96EEcT9BQ/видео.html
There were also several consecutive Georgs
That failed austrian painter singlehandedly kicked the ass of your nation back then you chutiya.

Die Worte, die über das Bild Kohls gelegt sind, stammen nicht von ihm.
The words superimposed on Kohl's picture are not his.
Austrian painter and *insert funny name of Otto von Bismarck here* were the best.
2:24 the man your waiting for
Austrian Painter may be iconic and one of the greats (for better or worse), but Bismarck was by far the greatest of them all. Helmut Kohl also doesn't get nearly enough credit for what he achieved.
EDIT: Damn RUclips censor is so trigger-happy.
Willy und Helmuth sind einfach Legenden
Ich finde Merkel geil
The first one turns out to be the best, no one will ever match the iron chancellor
Depends on how you see it. Throughout his entire political career Bismarck was an absolute genius. But when you look at his career as chancellor of the German Empire, you‘ll soon notice that he wasn‘t the best in his later years. Some examples:
- He banned the immensely popular SPD only to unban sometime later after immense protests.
- He unnecessarily escalated the so called „Kulturkampf“ between Catholics and Protestants.
- He was very sceptical of railways and tried to block the construction of railways into Berlin
In the late 1870s, his government was referred to as “Kanzlerdiktatur” (Chancellor dictatorship) and many called for him to step back.
Many Germans think that he wasn’t the best chancellor but that it either was Helmut Schmidt or Willy Brandt. Both worked for European peace (the latter winning the Nobel Peace Prize in the process) and ensured West-Germany’s position as a European power. The popularity of these two politicians is something people like Trump, Biden, Bolsonaro, Orban, Merkel, Putin, Xi Jingping, Macron or any major politician nowadays can only dream of.
Here’s a nice clip showing Schmidt’s charisma:
